Wow, amazing approach and landing! I'm currently completing my CPL and we just covered Visual Illusions under Human Factors. I noticed a few of them on this approach, the obvious one you mentioned, Black Hole Approach, but also the Runway Slope Illusion from the slight down slope, and also the Terrain Slope Illusion with low terrain sloping up to the threshold. All of these mess with a pilots ability to perceive the correct glide slope and know whether they are below or above it. It really goes to show that approaches like this just confirms that you're a bloody amazing pilot Ryan! Honestly, PNG is arguably one of the hardest environments for pilots to operate in and you make it look like a walk in the park, it's bloody awesome.

Try a baseball cap. The bill has always helped me when driving into the sun because it's quick and automatic to adjust the angle--much better than an opaque window visor. All you've got in the plane is a transparent visor, which is almost useless.

Ryan, why retract flaps right as you touchdown ? Is that to increase braking ?
@HikaruKatayamma2 жыл бұрын
Flaps actually do act as air breaks (secondary effect). I suspect that with the runway being sloped the way it is, he did it to reduce lift, giving the wheels more authority.
@MissionaryBushPilot2 жыл бұрын
When you retract the flaps it helps loose lift letting you get down on the ground just a bit quicker, especially when the runway slopes down on touchdown
@HikaruKatayamma2 жыл бұрын

@@MissionaryBushPilot Thank you Ryan ! I’m used to flying a 172/182 and just never raised my flaps at that point in the landing process so I was curious. Of course I land on nice, wide, paved, flat runways and never have to deal with terrain you deal with. Thanks for taking the time to explain !
