I was on this flight.. do a search now and again just to relive it and came across this.. Great video.. and news to me that it was a maintenance issue! Virgin said it was a fault out of their control when we first went to them for compensation and there was no claim to be made 😮

As an aircraft engineer of over 40 years I feel confident that a gear operational test by gear swing is require after replacing components.The root cause was a total failure of maintenance prcedure.

Why did the actuator being inverted result in a fluid leak. Did the hoses get damaged as a result of different positions of the upper and lower fluid connections.
@allenleung301
@allenleung301 Жыл бұрын
It seems the best way to understand more of how an aeroplane works and the engineering of it is to watch the videos about the incidents as presenters like you would have to explain the tech details of the failing part or parts and how they should correctly put up and/or repaired in order to make sure the aeroplane will be safe. Thanks.

So the maintenance crew had a 50/50 chance of installing that part correctly. Let me tell you those odds are not good. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve installed something that can go in two ways and got it wrong on the first attempt. It’s uncanny how bad 50/50 odds are.

If USB plugs are anything to go by a 50/50 chance to connect something wrong is actually a 99.9% chance to connect something wrong the first time. 🙃

Yes, well done !! Even though they were in a holding pattern, to burn off fuel, it appears that they were still heavy on landing. Once again well done to the crew !! Realizing they had to take in x amount of fuel to go from the UK to USA, being a 8 hour flight.

I'm also happy that you listened to your viewers suggestions about how to improve the videos 😊 I don't remember if you do this in your other videos, but in this one I didn't quite understand what the problem was with the upside down installation. Maybe a picture or a model of how it should be installed vs how it actually was installed on this airplane would've helped me understand it a bit better. But that's veeeery nitpick-y of me. You're doing a great job 👍

It was mounted upside down. The hydraulic fittings were 180 degrees rotated. Different size mountings would not have prevented this accident.

The 747 was designed to be able to land with half its main gear not down... im not sure if you are aware of this but this landing is not a big deal. During certification, the 747-100 had to land with half its gear. Every variant has had to do the same.. even the 800 variant can do it.

@@PianoMan-hx3ev it doesn’t really matter if it’s down, it has to be locked too. If it’s not locked then it will retract as soon as weight is applied. The indicator in the cockpit told them that the gear wasn’t locked, which was correct, having a camera would not have provided any additional information.

Pilots landed a bit hard, considering 1/4 of the landing gear was missing, and it didn't look like they tried to use roll to level the wings. I wonder what their thought process was on that.
