May 15, 1942, red removed from aircraft markings. The planes are not armed, so it must be pre- midway. Devastator planes are still flying. A significant historical film!

The presence of TBDs suggests pre-Midway, too, as the Devastator was pulled from frontline service following that battle.

One of the SBD"s shown in this film is probably my dad's, ENS Art Rausch. He was assigned as a pilot to VB-6 from 12/16/41 to 6/23/41. His assigned plane was 6-B-18, or 6-B-17 (definition is too poor to see the cowling numbers). He participated in in almost all raids up to and including the battle of Midway. I will make sure dad's grandsons and great grandsons see this film.

Art,your Dad probably knew my great-uncle LCDR Halstead Hopping, aka "Spike",who was flying SBD's off the Enterprise at the same time.Spike was lost to ground fire at Roi Feb 1,1942.

In the months after Pearl Harbor it was thought that the central red dot could be mistaken for a Japanese Hinomaru from a distance and in May 1942 it was eliminated. On aircraft in service they were painted over with white. So the aircraft here were filmed between May, 1942, and the advent of white insignia "bars" in late June, 1943.

@@tsmgguy Actually, the time-frame is much narrower. The TBD Devastator torpedo bombers shown in this film were replaced by the TBF Avenger, in the summer of '42. The TBD was obsolete by this time, and of the three squadrons that participated in the Battle of Midway, only 4 aircraft survived. The presence of TBDs here probably means this was before Midway (first week of June, '42).

@@davehopping7212 My dad was not in LCDR Hoppings VS6 squadron and did not fly with VB6 on the Roi raid. I'm sure dad saw and possibly talked to your great uncle during Jan 1942. I do remember dad telling me he, and other young Ensigns, watched your uncle and other pilots make some "interesting" landings those first months of the war. Your uncle was also a very brave pilot.......check out the book "Pacific Payback"

Those aren't F2A Buffaloes. They're Grumman F4F Wildcats.

I was going to say...yeah, those are definitely Wildcats, probably F4F-4s since they have folding wings and what appears to be six 50 cal guns, 3 in each wing.

In some scenes the aircraft lack ordnance so I would say that they are not Midway strike aircraft. The TBDs have the insignia that came into use between Coral Sea and Midway. Mid May? When the Enterprise and Hornet were on their way back to Pearl after they aborted run down to the Coral Sea?

Humans, starting at the most basic level, considered only survival essentials: food, shelter and physical security. Wandering about in togas, thinking deep thoughts and considering feelings would come, but took a back seat, at first, to survival. So, being a social species, and understanding strength and security in numbers, humans worked in small groups, in small geographic areas. Eventually, the groups encountered adjacent groups that had run into hard times (disease, crop failure, poor or corrupt leadership etc.), and were desperate to survive. If the well-off group had wise, benevolent leaders, with a surplus of food, an offer was made to take them in. Rinse and repeat, and peaceful civilizations emerged. Over time mushrooms were eaten, religions were formed and civilizations sometimes clashed if the disparity of wealth, dissimilarity of moral viewpoints and/or depravity of leadership was too great. In the end, the strong - physically and mentally - tend to survive, so there's that.

So this is the natural end....Only the stronger survive...It reminds me of a song .Natural selection...In this case not natural, the stronger rules.@@commentatron
