Less than a month after I bought my house, a 150 year old tree fell during a storm. It was caught on camera because of my brand new (at the time) security system. I loved that tree because it was beautiful, would shade my house in the hot months, and it massively raised my property value. Turns out, it had some kind of root rot problem because the seemingly healthy trunk that was 6 feet wide and likely weighed more than 3 tons was suddenly horizontal and blocking my driveway. I called the city and a week later, it was gone, but 2 days after that was when I got a huge fine for cutting down a protected tree. Yeah, I googled some stuff, made some phone calls, and set a meeting between me, a lawyer, and the head of wildlife affairs in my small town. 20 minutes and a threat of a lawsuit later and the fine was waved because I showed the security footage of the tree falling in the storm and the poor bureaucrat knew it would be considered an act of God and I wouldn't be liable.

Tree case it wouldn't of mattered whose property that tree is on as a protected landmark essentially everyone owns it

I used to be an electrician. The amount of people in offices that would ignore notices and restore power while we were working on circuits was unbelievable. We learnt to remove and take the circuit breaker with us while we worked, but even then, one time somebody found a spare and replaced it, $27,000 damage that caused!

When you have crappy butt-hole neighbors (or HOA), cameras are a requirement, not an option. You should be discrete about the cameras. That way the butt-holes would keep up their actions and do something really illegal.

The one thing that always amazes me about these stories is the fact that some lawyer actually stands up in court to defend these idiots. In this story it says the lawyer dumped his client after the judgement, WHY did they go to court as the defendants lawyer in the first place? Are all lawyers in the USA so desperate that they will take on any case despite the merits or lack of them just for the fee? I read somewhere that there is one lawyer for every 300 people in the USA. If you figure out that the average person only needs a lawyer 3 times in their lifetime then it is impossible for the majority of lawyers to make a living.
