Hi Landon. I recently came across a bit of information about connecting necks to bodies: The path the screws make through the body should be slightly proud of the screw size. This will make the screw PULL the neck better into the pocket and stops 'bridging'. Look into it. I love your guitar.

I think you're more accurate in describing this process as "assembling" the guitar as opposed to "building" it, as is often said. Building is what a luthier does, constructing the instrument from raw materials (mostly).

Well done, Landon! Looks fantastic. You’ve sort of done the impossible here… I’ll never be famous as far as my playing talent goes. But I’ve come to really love building guitars from parts over the last couple years. To be honest I’ve never been a big fan of Jazzmasters. They’re nice guitars obviously, but I’ve always leaned more towards a Strat or a Tele as far as preference goes. But……… that ‘Lake Placid Blue’ and black hard wear got good to me. I may just follow your lead and try to build a Jazzmaster. If it turns out half as nice looking as yours I’ll be a happy guy. Thanks, Landon!

Been watching you for little over a year now. Gotta say I love your delivery. I never fail to giggle. Who knew our passion for guitars could be so funny?? I had to laugh when you got stuck on reaming. Almost had to pull the car over. What? Not sure what Im saying. After also watching Ted the luthier. Not at the same time. About the same length of time. Not that his video is as long as yours. I mean some of them might be longer. Its not important. He talks about reaming quite a bit. Seeing you get stuck on it made me giggle. Now I cant watch him without giggling. Ive always wanted a Jazzmaster. Well not always. I wanted toy cars. It took me a few years before I knew what a guitar was. But that was the 70s. Ive wanted one since one of you decided to review one a while back. So how much did your build cost in total? This look like fun to me. Im thinking Olympic White. Is it cliche to want gold hardware or should creme plastics look better....hmmmm. have to think on that. Thank you for being you. You are one of the best.

A few things: Musiclily is great. I got a new pickguard for a Jazz bass and all the screw holes just lined up. Magical. Second: You would think that Fender/Sweetwater would send you tuners that would fit into that neck without having to ream out the holes. It was cool to watch and I’m sure you appreciate the experience, but someone should have mentioned “this neck is drilled for Vintage tuners and not modern locking tuners”. Finally: the tuners on my old Precision bass were almost locked up. I looked up some stuff and a waxy lube like paraffin was recommended as part of the work to fix them. You know what I ended up using? Unflavored Chapstick. And very fine sanding/polishing. Freed up those 50 year old tuners amazingly. Now if only my 50 year old body wouldn’t seize up…

Nice work… but… you forgot the string tree. 😮😆 I built a parts Jazzmaster earlier this year. I actually sanded the sheen down, made it faded Candy Apple Red. Then put a nitro vintage formula clear coat over top. Hopefully it will check some over time. I stuck with the original style Jazzmaster bridge so I also had to shim the neck for a good break angle over the tailpiece. I like the your build with the Strat style bridge, no shim necessary. 🤘

I recently put together a partscaster Esquire with a roasted maple neck. I used a harbor freight reamer for the tuning machine holes and I will advise anyone to not buy a harbor freight reamer. It took me hours to ream the holes millimeters and my hands hurt for days. Buy a nice reamer and hate yourself slightly less. The neck was supposed to be ready for vintage tuners, it still needed reaming and it was way harder than it should’ve been.

I didn't price check everything, just the expensive stuff but looks like probably around $1600-$1700 if you buy everything new from the sources listed. In case you were wondering, you can get a Fender Performer Jazzmaster used for about $1,200 (if buying online, shipping is around 150. if you can find someone near by you could get it for less) and those cunife/cobalt pickups sell used for about $170-$200.

great video, building partscasters is always fun! But I noticed one thing: You installed the Fender Tuners in the wrong order. With staggered tuning machines, the shorter posts are supposed to be installed further away from the nut, so that the strings have a steeper break angle over the nut. It's pretty much the same thing a string tree would be used for, just without the added friction. Hope this helps, otherwise you gave a lot of very useful information!

Hey man, Just a heads up, the washers for the pots go to the base of the pot, not beneath the nut 😉 Stew Mac also makes a nice tool to make life easy for those little titts on the tuning machines. They also have the other ones on the same tool incase you decide to go with the Schaller ones with the titts closer to the base hole for the tuners. Nice axe, I've never done a Jazzmaster.
