As a non mechanic that wanted to know what my local LR service garage should be doing as part of today’s service this was super useful thanks. I always look at the list of ticks on the sheet and wonder whether they really did it!?! 😊

That 5W30 looks like water. There's plenty of discussion switching over to 5W40, and Castrol recommend 5W40 if you are living in warm climates. Nice video.

@@DipstickDave weird indeed! That's the amazing power of the internet. We actually use these kind of cars ( off roaders) more often here because of the conditions of our roads.

There was me thinking, just another service video... I’ll watch because I’m bored but I know how to service a car..., but wow. Very well put together. I really liked the style, and was clearly aimed for a home mechanic, nobody should be left with questions afterwards. So top notch work. Also I love your oil Extractor. I had being holding off servicing myself due to the mess it would make and being in a rental property, but it’s such a simple tool, bought one immediately. (So used to seeing large industrial ones, never thought to look for a hand pump). I would be interested to see another video on transmission services for the disco myself but that’s a selfish want, but things like gearbox, transfer case, and diffs, it would be good to know any tricks you know or find.

I’m genuinely thankful for everyone’s comments on this vid. This was the first thing I read this morning and it put me in a brilliant mood. Looks like I’ve got the level of instruction right. Not teaching you to suck eggs, and giving enough instructions to get you through. Like many tubers I don’t do this for any money, just the love of the topic (playing with cars!), wanting to help others and the novelty of making the vids. More vids coming on the Disco and also a new car! Well new to me a 2002 Mini Cooper S.

Soooooo glad I found this video, I was wondering if there was a suck point for the oil on these, and all the other videos I watched was them removing the sump plug and oil going everywhere, I'll be collecting my disco in the next week or so, and it'll be getting a full set of oil changes, great video, thanks....

Thanks Dave, at 10' 25" in you remove the brake cylinder cover. Not found anyone anywhere yet to show how this cover is removed without snapping anything, does it come off easily? Also is the auxiliary battery under this cover. Also cannot find anyone to confirm the location of this battery?

Hi Dave , great video, is this service for every 15000 miles or once a year?. I have 30000 service coming up soon I take this video is for this service . Regards mark
@DipstickDave
@DipstickDave 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark. The derive is mileage based, but it depends where you live. If you think about the oil condition, is there big temperature changes in the year, is there much dust or sand. Are you off reading. All of that will effect the oil life expectancy. I personally service every year, my mileage has dropped off a cliff. It would take me years to do 15k these days. Yes the 30k service is the same. I might do a quick vid for the intervals with additional steps at some point.

Hi Dave . Thanks for the very helpful video, my only question is I have a D4 3.0 diesel and my handbook clearly states 5.7 litres of oil not 6L as you said. Would 6L cause some problems from over filling.
@DipstickDave
@DipstickDave 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam, always go with the manual, but 300ml wouldn’t be enough to cause damage. As a rule of thumb it takes a litre of oil to get from minimum to maximum on the dip stick. And the handbook would aim for the middle of the two.

Do you extract the oil with the engine warm or cold?
@DipstickDave
@DipstickDave 3 жыл бұрын
Take it out as hot as you can. That way it sucks better and the oil is well mixed. I take mine for a run, get home, bonnet up, start sucking the oil out straight away. Then I get my tools. Good luck!

Do you get out all the oil ? Thought you can just get it out from under the car...
@DipstickDave
@DipstickDave 4 жыл бұрын
There is a sump plug. You have to take the bash plate off from under the engine. It’s located on the side (like a lot of gearboxes) and pours out everywhere. If I was worried about the amount of oil left in the engine, I would still suck it out and then remove the sump plug. Less mess!

@@DipstickDave brill video. Don't suppose you happen to have a link to the manual extraction pump you use? Lastly. In terms or weighing up the cost of doing it myself Vs sending to my friendly indy.. how much would you say it costs for the parts... So, air and pollen and fuel filter and 6l of 5W30 oil? Thanks so much in advance. Ian.
@DipstickDave
@DipstickDave 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ian. The one I use is amzn.to/3nz4o87 but when this one finally needs replacing I would get a larger capacity air operated on amzn.to/39koY6P. Let me know if the links don’t work. As for the cost it’s hard to say, but at £60-80+ pounds per hour and a markup on the parts it really racks up.
