Two more tips on grass removal -- a tiller can chew it up pretty good and then you remove the chunks with a rake. Some swear by boiling water to kill weeds, might work. I've been doing beds by hand for 20 years now and am fine using a pickaxe or shovel, but I just recently bought an electric tiller similar to Jim's and wow does it zip through things! Also, I've never once used chemicals on my garden / yard because I want the insects and birds to thrive. Now I live in GA and we have a lot of beautiful, small lizards in the yard and I would never want to disturb them by using a chemical. I pull dandelions by hand and they never return.

I usually use the rubber edging but I like this better. Thanks Jim, great info.

I do the trench method as well. It gives such a great look and really helps keep the sod out of the bed. And if your grass does spread it pulls out much easier. I've never like that plastic edging.

The method you show to edge between the concrete and mulch, can it also be applied to mulched street trees? I hate how the mulch easily overflows onto the street

Good tips! I'm curious if it's ok to put mulch on top of oak leaves in beds. I'd like for them to eventually make the soil better rather than always raking them up and burning them.

It is definitely fine. Your mulch will last longer as well

This is what happened to me with my neighbors trees. Last year after 31 years I switched to shade plants

Another great video! Question: Will the Roundup hurt the tree roots?

+Lee Butler No,. I do limit spraying anything as much I as can, but it doesn't get taken up that way.

these plants will require more fertilizing and watering, than normal ...because they'll be competing with the tree?
@JimPutnam6 жыл бұрын
+jonnken No more fertilizer, but above the tree will be dryer. Below the tree my sidewalk holds moisture back and it tends to stay moist. Oaks are not as bad as Maples. Maples I avoid planting around.
