Thanks for this informative video Cal! It has answered just about all of my questions. I inherited a system that my father never installed and have retrofitted with LED and works great! I ended up adding additional lights and have changed some to get more wash and height. Also, I decided to add a few LED floods up in the tall trees just inside my rear property line. These shine up into the foliage and cast a very pleasant glow at night. Thanks so much for all of your tips as far as placement and for the technical advice!

Excellent videos and explanations. What are the stores you recommend to get the lights and materials for Landscaping Lighting? Is there a wholesale place as well? Somewhere also to get commercial grade good quality lighting? I know you already mentioned some of them. Any others? Thank you
@LightingDoctor4 жыл бұрын
It really depends on location you are in. Steer clear of amazon and large home improvement stores as the quality is pretty poor. Most good landscape supply stores in your areas will carry numerous brands. Rule of thumb is just stay away from any lights that are considerable cheaper. They are cheap for a reason and will almost surely give you grief long term

Great video, was wondering what type of light people use for fences? I have a 8ft privacy fence and am stuck between stakes into the group with uplighting or mount to top of fence and shine down.

What brand is the best bang for the buck lighting, that’s still durable and decent quality? Leonlite on Amazon any good? I counted many times, and took notes... and I need about 40 up-lights and 40 path-lights for around the house. Local landscape supply stores have many brands and seem expensive. Idk which is best bang for buck tho.
@LightingDoctor3 жыл бұрын
Its not a brand I would recco.ed or use. You typically get what you pay for on amazon. FX luminaire has some of the most durable lights at a very competive price for a professional fixture
@LessTalkMoreDelicious3 жыл бұрын
@@LightingDoctor Thx for the rec! I’ll check out FX Luminaire! Any recommendation for best-bang-4-buck transformer please? ...For 80 lights (I assume I need something bigger than 300w?... maybe 400w if that size is even made... if not, 600w?)

Great video! I have a chain of 5 spotlights that are the integrated variety. Just bought house a year ago and don't know for sure but assume they are original with the house which would make them 16 years old. The last two in the chain don't work. Should I replace all 5? Thank you!

What is your idea about low voltage lights from harbor freight?
@sfg04264 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great info. When it comes to the transformer for low voltage lighting, what's the best choice, 12VDC or 12VAC? Seems like most recessed deck lights are 12VDC yet many other lights are AC. It would be nice to control all landscape and deck lights from one transformer/controller, but seems a little confusing when it to comes to the transformer choices?
@LightingDoctor4 жыл бұрын
AC is preffered

Great video, thanks. One question please: I'll be installing a new system and incrementally adding lights in the future. I'm wondering about the transformer size to get. If I get a larger transformer, say 200+ watts, does it draw a full 200 watts of power even if I only have 100 watts of lights on it? Would a smaller transformer, like a 120 watt draw less power with the same 100 watts of lights than the 200 watt transformer? many thanks.
@LightingDoctor4 жыл бұрын
Stick with the 200 watt, it will only draw what the lights require and leave you room for expansion. Word of caution, make sure the transformer is 20 to 70 percent more than the lights say you will need. The lower quality the lights the more additional wattage you will require on the transformer

I wonder what type of wires you are using 14/2, 16/2, or(12/2 are the worst to work on for the landscaping. I wonder if people using a 10/2 wire as well.

I have a sollos 300 W that was installed about 10 years ago. It was working well but now the lights only come on sometimes. How do I fix this?
@TheFirewoodHut5 жыл бұрын
I got a 200w transformer & four 3.5w pathway lights for Christmas. Do I need to get a smaller transformer? Also the instructions say the 1st light needs to have at least 10' of wire from Transformer; my 1st light is 2' away from Trans.
@LightingDoctor5 жыл бұрын
Because it is an LED system you will be fine with a larger transformer and also not really any concern with how far to place that first light from the transformer. If they were halogen lights you would want to be more aware. Cheers!

I have an outlet on my front porch, about 3 foot from the ground where I would start burying the wire to run my landscape lights. How can I hide the excess wire that will be exposed on my porch and make it look professional? Suggestions?
@LightingDoctor4 жыл бұрын
You can either drill directly down through the porch or just try tucking the wires in the corner along the porch or wherever there might be space

Hello Paul, I am installing Hampton Bay low voltage 300-watt digital transformer. Can I attach 2 to 3 14/2 runner lines to the transformer to reduce the backtracking of lines? Someone told me it would be difficult to get them all in the common.
@LightingDoctor6 жыл бұрын
You can if you can fit them, however I know that the hampton bay tranformers do have rather small wire terminals. You may have to splice all the runs below the transformer and have one wire running up th the transformer. If possible the wire running up to the transformer should be atleast 12/2

Have you had any experience with Best Pro Lighting. When we moved in to our house, there were Malibu landscape lights. I removed the worn out path lights and am looking to buy lights from Best Pro Lighting. They sell lights for a cheeper price. They claimed to be professional grade lights. I looked into it and it also comes with PVC steak which should be better than plastic and metal stakes. If you don’t have experience with them, could you try their lights and review them? If you don’t want to it’s fine. For path lights, they sell a large path light (they call it mushroom light), pagoda light (which I know you have never used), small hat light, small mushroom hat light, and a brass fixture.

Yes we have seen this brand before. Very similar to many of the models they sell on Amazon. Manufactured overseas and brought over in bulk. Its not something I would reccomend if you are looking for quality and longevity.

Hi Paul, I have some left over landscape lighting fixtures from a previous home. I know that LED is the way to go, but I would like to use the "new" fixtures. Can I mix these older, but yet new, fixtures with LED lighting?
@LightingDoctor6 жыл бұрын
Yes that would be fine, i would just suggest retrofitting the old fixtures to LED if they are not already. Thanks for the question.
