Out of all the Landscape Photographers on KZbin I truly enjoy Gavin's videos the most. Not only are they highly entertaining but also rewarding informative. And I'm not just saying that because we're the same age kicking the half a century mark. LOL. Thanks mate for your continued hard work to bring these videos to us the Landscape Photography masses. All the best to you and the family.

The vein you pointed out, Gavin, is a quartz vein. This area of Maine coastline was formed by the sediments of an intervening ocean between a microcontinent and North American continent becoming severely compressed and deformed ~400 million years ago. Other than the quartz veins, the rocks are typically brownish quartzite and gray phyllite. These rocks that make up the ledges are classified as metamorphic rock, which means that at one time they were affected by heat and pressure inside the earth which has significantly changed their form. Before metamorphism they were sedimentary rock, which formed originally by hardening of deep-sea sediment (sand and mud) into rock. Minerals in the rock recrystallized under the prolonged heating to grow slowly into metamorphic minerals such as mica and chlorite, turning mudstones into phyllite and turning sandstones into quartzite. Microscopic mineral grains became aligned to produce a rock cleavage, a wood-like "grain" along which the rock splits into sheets and splinters. When you see this in cross-section, all the folded patterns and "splintery" planes can take on a petrified wood appearance. Great tip about accounting for wide angle warping. Really like the shot and composition you came away with too. Sorry about getting kicked out. Most parks I've seen allow visitation 30 min after sunset.

That rock structure, Gavin, is called ' boudinage' (after the French word for a type of sausage). It's caused by the different reactions to the stresses and strains of earth movements on the two different rock types (the sausage layer and the rocks on either side of it).
@stephenweltonppc8652
@stephenweltonppc8652 Жыл бұрын
My understanding is that boudinage occurs consistent with the bedding structure, (aligned). I'd want to see more detail, but that diagonal intrusion suggests to me that rock was fractured, then infilled with mud. I think Gavin should go back and do an entire video on it. 😆

Hell of a shot Gav! I haven’t been to Portland in years, and I live 45 min away. Keep working your way up the coast. Harpswell, Georgetown, Boothbay, Rockland, and especially Acadia, in Bar Harbor. It offers the beautiful combo of mountains and coastline. And you won’t get kicked out of the park at sunset. Or escape from the crowded coast line and hit up Moosehead or Baxter State Park. Anyway, enjoy your stay. And keep the eff out of Portland.

Just to let you know, if you come back to try and get sunrise Sometimes the gate is closed to get in until after sunrise but not always. But if the gate is closed there is a small parking area at the main road where you turn to go up to the lighthouse. You c an park down there and walk up the hill to the lighthouse.

If you use DXO Viewpoint for distortion correction you can just tweak the structure (in your case the lighthouse) without losing so much of the surrounding scene as the global correction in photoshop does.

Hi Gavin and Amanda. Thanks for sharing your day at the Portland Head Light. Your final photo was magnificent. The thing I like most about many of your videos is that you share your thought process with your audience. For those who haven't tried serious landscape photography it seems so easy. But your videos show how much effort is really required, including finding that memorable spot to begin with, surveying the area, conceptualizing the shot from among many available alternatives, evaluating the light, and then waiting for just the right moment. Your viewers can see by your example what's required to take a great landscape photo. Sorry to be critical, but in my opinion the side trip to Cabelas/Bass Pro Shops added nothing to the video. As a world-class expert in composition, you know the meeting of the expression "Less is more."

If you want sharp zoomed in preview on the GFX, try setting it to RAW+F. It will then use the large jpg file for preview instead of the smaller embedded jpg in the raw file. At least that's the way it works with the X-T1 and X-T2.

Saw the thumbnail and immediately hit play. I grew up about 20 minutes away from Portland Headlight and have been there more times than I can count. (My mom lives about 5 min away). I can definitely confirm when big storms hit (especially ‘nor’easters) the waves and imagine potential is spectacular. I have a photo on my wall I took from the exact same location hanging on my wall right now, not even remotely as good as yours though. Also, the hours they are open definitely vary depending on the mood of the people opening and closing the gate sadly. PHL definitely has potential for great sunrise, sunset and even Milky Way images, but the official hours definitely hurts.

Amusing to hear the remarks about the Fuji camera showing exaggerated colours. That was what we experienced with their 35mm film in the 1970's. But then the Kodak film we took along from Canada just didn't translate in Scotland. There, the most pleasing and realistic for scenery was from Agfa. That's what all the resident uncles (my dad's brothers) in Scotland used. Maybe differences in the latitude and atmosphere were factors?

Ha! Welcome to New England! I work in Portland so I can't be arsed to photograph Portland Head Light! 😂 Aren't there signs all over the entrance to the carparks for the lighthouse that say closes at dusk or sundown ... if you traveled a bit more south to York Maine you can sit at The Nubble Lighthouse for 24 hours a day. I've done a bit of astro there. The only problem is that the carpark at Nubble Light is very small and you are in the middle of York Beach ... so like a billion tourists. That's why I like astro because most tourists don't go there at night. Although at Christmas they put lights all over the lighthouse and it is nice at night. Sunrise at Nubble is pretty awesome too and any time there is a storm. The waves at Nubble crashing on the rocks in front of the lighthouse is pretty magnifequa!

I'll take being a landscape photographer over wedding photographer any day. As a landscape photographer you don't have to deal with all the bridezilla's that have been planning their perfect wedding since they could talk. Don't even think about missing one of their must have shots and totally ruining the rest of their wedding because you didn't get it. Who needs that stress??? I looked at the Hassleblad medium format camera you use and it's not that bad of a price point actually. What I noticed where for me it falls short is lens selection. Being a very high end camera it looks as though they focus more on prime lenses than zooms. I like having zoom lenses with large coverage areas rather than toting around lots of lenses. FYI, if you arrive at the Portland Headlight before sunrise there's nobody there to kick you out. :)

This is why people should probably do reserach. I have found it's easier to do sunrises (although perhaps less desirable because you have to get up early, especially if you have to drive somewhere) but I've had fewer issues with sunrises than sunsets. Plus if you think of tourists, I would say more are out for sunset than sunrise (because the average non-phototgrapher/tourist doesn't like getting up before sunrise in most cases, but coming to a location before sunset is more easy and more people do that because they are already up). This is why when I do travel photography, I almost always get up early and shoot then. That way if I manage to shoot and get something I Like at sunset, it's just a bonus, but streets and major attractions in key locations are usually way less busy (or virtually empty) before and around sunrise. Obviously the location has to be conducive to a sunrise to bother. IF it's not, then you could try for sunset but you may run into what you've run into.

Gavin, when I saw the title of your video, I immediately thought of Portland Head Lighthouse! Two years ago I was flying my drone there (also out to the remote Ram Island lighthouse like you did), when the full moon suddenly rise right before sunset. All the photographers were going wild shooting this event when the warden came and started to kick everybody out. A fellow photog whispered to me “I planned this shoot with the full moon and I will get my shot even if they have to drag me out of here!

Awesome shot, too bad you were kicked out right at the worse possible moment. it sucks... But hey, we have 170 lighthouses here in NS. We don't get kicked out of any of them at any time, and some of them are really spectacular. As per the crystal-looking formation embedded in the rocks you mentioned earlier in the video, you will find lots of those in the Baxter Harbour area south of Cape Split in Scott Bay. I am not sure what they are, but the wife did some sort of macro photography of those things; the images are amazing. You should explore that area when you come back ... if you do... LOL Wedding photography??? oh God.... Yeah, you don't have to sleep in a camper in the parking lot of Cabelas, and it is fun most of the time, BUT.... after trying to keep the divorced parents of the bride smiling for the pictures for 5 hours... you really feel like one of the animals in the Cabelas exhibit. Wedding photography sucks. I did it on the side in the '90s. 12 hours of work, not to mention pre-event shoots; and hours assembling albums (this was in film days) for not nearly enough money. If you're not a real people person, it's not for you. Wonderful final image, BTW! Did you take one with the Hasselblad?

Spectaculiscious image, Gavin. I reckon the orange shutter button has improved your photography by at least 6.5%.
