An overnight camping trip to the 'Black Sand' beaches of New Zealand to try and work how lost I've become with my Landscape Photography.
I need to strip my process down to the bare bones over the next few videos, so tat i can get back to where i was before hand. Come with me and se this process stripped bare!
Gratitude to people like Mads Peter Iversen who keep me inspired and keep me going with it all. I dont know how he does so much!

Having been a passionate photographer for over 30 years, I can say with absolute confidence that this is something you naturally go through from time to time, so roll with the punches. When you create images this good and on a consistent basis as you do you, you will never be at risk of throwing the towel in, because a photographer creating images of this standard has an addiction for their craft, and this is merely bump in the road. Don't worry about it! It still astounds me why you haven't climbed the KZbin hall fo fame yet, as this is one of the best channels out there. Great story telling, great cinematography and sublime images. #KZbin needs to pull it's socks up and develop an algorithm that can detect quality material so more people can enjoy what you have to offer!

HI Bernard, thanks mate - i appreciate that and some good advice right there. Im probably in a place, in these last couple of years that im happy with my output and a LONG way awy from where i was several years back, (despite this little blip of recent weeks). Fundamentally im a photographer who VLOGS and they really are a lot of work. I sincerely hope that its not the Vlogging and the work involved that has affected me, as I really, really enjoy filming them and getting them produced! I will of course keep shooting and look forward to getting back on the horse! I appreciate the comments very much! Regards Ewan

Hey Steve. Thanks very much mate. I am indeed very lucky to be able to do something i enjoy very much which allows me to do something at my own pace, and one from which i can make an income. Landscape photography had had some unexpected benefits in unexpected parts of my life which im also enjoying, which ill mention in the next video. I really enjoy this whole video creation aspect too as it is new and is a completely different process given the complexity of them, especially when you dont plan them - so ill keep going with them for now! = ) Thanks for taking the time to comment and you keep going too! As there is nothing more rearding than people wantong to hang your images in their homes... its definately worth pursuing. Do you have a flicke account or where can your stuff be viewed? E

Wow. I just stumbled upon your channel and boy was I pleasantly surprised. This video itself felt like a movie, you have an incredible talent for both cinematography and photography! The pacing, music, and colors made me feel like I was actually there with you. I've never really paid much mind to landscape photography but this video alone has opened my eyes to the beauty of it. Your photos at the end were absolutely gorgeous, if I wasn't a broke university student I would be willing to pay a hefty amount of money for one of those prints. I'm not even slightly surprised that Nat Geo have taken notice of your work. Your photography skills, knowledge, and video production quality deserve so many more subscribers, It's a divine shame you're not huge on this platform yet. I'll definitely be sharing your videos around to my friends to do my part in getting you the recognition you deserve. I hope by the time i'm writing this you've found a way to climb out of your mental rut, because it would be a crying waste of talent for you to switch to crochet ;)

I wonder if I have complicated what i do because of Vlogging, as sitting in one location just to take one shot, might not be very entertaining viewing. Ill just have to work that one out i reckon! = ) I do enjoy the production of the vids. I showed @SimonBooth the timeline to one of the videos and he was appalled at the complexity of them. I have watched all your videos over and over, paying attention to every sentence you spoke. Part of them sank in, and I now do a bit of planning before going out, checking the weather, cloud cover, sunrise/sunset directions, etc etc. And, things are looking up at long last. I am truly inspired by you, persistence and energy, and I shall emulate all those. I love your teachings, and I love you for your knowledge and eyes for good light and epic photographs. If that's losing your mojo, if you lose it again and find it, can I have half. The images at the end of this video are superb. I've seen a lot of your videos now and I think of all the landscape photographers I've seen your use of light is second to none. I could really see how you were struggling and almost desperate to capture something trying to make 3 images, that's not you. But even in your concern that was clear in your video you still managed to make images of which many of photographers would be proud. I've taken something from your videos that's helped me to distil my own methodology, that's taking fewer subjects and as you say being economical with the shutter and you've helped my mojo.

OH man up, feel the sand between your toes, the warmth of the sun and the smell of the sea air. If I tried that just now my toes would be numb in 5 minutes, I'd not feel the sun through 5 layers but I'd taste the sea air and I'm available to co-shoot with as someone suggested :-) Joking aside you know yourself what you're doing and rushing about isn't you. Hi Ewan UK Tom here, I followed the link in your email to this video, I must say wherever you shoot you produce so great stuff always, I do understand how at times we become a little down and start to drought ourselves, Hey that's human nature to most. I'm going to say something here that may make you smile but I think is relevant. When I was first married a zillion years gone by my grandad came to visit as I was putting my bedding plants into the garden borders, I only had 24 small plants and I was spreading around a large garden (stay with me here) My grandad pointed out that if I wanted the best out off those flowers it would be best to concentrate them mostly in one place and get the best ascetically as they flower concentrate the eye and enjoy instead of a little here and there. While I am only a amateur photographer I always apply the same rule, if everything is good around me I try and stick with it instead of rushing away for some other place that may or may not be great. I hope this makes sense as it took me ages to type. UK Tom

Congrats on the National Geographic offer. Loved the shots as always. It’s heartbreaking when you don’t get inspired. I just went through a couple of years of it. Kept going to the same places didn’t help. My wife said it’s like taking the same photo of a bride over and over for a month. Luckily I am once again motivated. Getting a drone helped. I get to see the world in a whole new perspective including the same olds.

Hi Ewan. Felt compelled to comment. Firstly, congrats on your Natgeo photo. Its the image that drew me to your vlog in the first place, well deserved. I think its the best photo i've seen in the last year. Secondly, thanks for being so open and sharing with us. You aren't alone. No matter what industry, it's not uncommon to loose your mojo. I've lost it at least three times over the last year for both work and photography. I've found talking to others (usually over a pint or a dram) and getting someone else's perspective on your problem really helps. I've also found taking a day out and blanking the mind/doing something and not thinking about it for a while else also helps. For me, its going Salmon Fishing on the mighty River Tay here in Scotland, either in the boat with my friend (who's also the Ghillie) if i want a chat, or on the bank if i want some quiet self reflection time. Sounds like your time in the tent was self reflection. My photography is no where near your level and it's no longer part of my income (was for a while), but never the less i do understand and can relate to the pressure of it being your bread and butter. Pushing through is definitely the right thing, but equally its important to make changes in my experience. I lost my mojo last year through work commitments stopping trips away in our motorhome for photo trips. Started to get me down and issues with work (loosing interest/mojo on a piece of work that was going nowhere) just exasperated it even more. Watching your vlog, Thomas Heaton, Brendan and others vlogs inspired me to get back at it and set some goals (both work and photography wise). So, i took my camera with me on a business trip to the states, took a 12 hour round trip to Death Valley and took some photos. Made many mistakes because of rushing (like you just talked about) but had fun, got images in the bag and most importantly got a big smile on my face and my mojo back to the point that my camera is with me again almost everywhere. Lastly, stop being so harsh on yourself. Those were great images you got from that trip. I'd have been delighted to get even one of those in the bag. For me, getting away, scouting an area and coming home without any images in the bag isn't a wasted trip. Yes it may have cost time and money, but i look at it as an important part of the workflow. Conditions aren't always right or things happen which mean you cant always get the images your have in mind, but doesn't mean its been a waste. Two weeks ago I took a photo trip down to the Lake District and went to Wastwater. We almost grounded on two humped bridges, couldn't get our motorhome parked anywhere to get out and take photos and yet i viewed it as a valuable trip as i now know what to expect, where and when to go, what to take (and what not, i.e. not the moho!). Keep up the good work and keep pushing through.

Hey Chris, Thanks very much for your kind comments. Its real difficult indeed doing photography commercially, buy extremely awarding when you get it right, but your comment made me think, that maybe im looking at this all wrong. For me the photography, is a bi product of the trip, but the mechanic to get me out there on the first place. I think ive forgotten to enjoy where i am and if the conditions are right.... Ill get an image and if i dont, then.... i dont and thats all good too. Thats maybe some of what you found recently too on your last trip. Ive been letting that part get to me which is all back to front and definately not helpful. Im glad youve got your mojo back and taking your camera with you. Youll never get an image if you dont have that with you! Thanks for your support though Chris. It all helps, and appreciate it heaps. Regards Ewan

Hello Ewen, I have had the same feelings recently, perhaps because, I find it easy to compose my images and the comments about my images were amazing and yet still, this was not enough for me. My mother was ill in the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh. So, during my free moments of visiting and instead of just landscape photography, I too just did street photography and architecture and it was so refreshing to do just photography. But I also involved myself in the history of the locations and chatted to perfect strangers and had a ball of a time doing so... I feel the answer is for you is to break your normal routine, to do something radical and different to refresh the brain batteries. As my mother used to say, All Work and No Play Makes for a Dull Boy! You clearly have a talent who now lives a spectacular country. Step back from yourself, have a proper break for a week - No Photography and then view what is missing and then you will find the answer. Also, if, you do not enjoy doing vlogs - Don't do them would be my advice. Best regards, Allan Davies.

Thanks Allan. In retrospect - Maybe the street photography was part of the remedial process, by design, or accident. Im sure that its all part of my learning curve too. Philosophically, photography has taught me a lot about ME and ive met some awesome folk through it, so its all positive. You have given me an idea though!!!...... = ) Re the vlogs - heres the predicament - conversely, i really enjoy the creation of them and the problem solving required to put them altogether, as though there was a plan in the first place - i just need to work out how to plan the shooting of them better! = ). Many thanks Allan. Its appreciated! Regards, Ewan

All artists/creatives experience this kind of thing, sometimes it’s good to be reminded that it happens to everyone, so thanks for sharing. By the way your photography is leagues above what I can do, it’s very impressive to me to see what you can do, I think your other images in this video stand just as highly as the National Geographic one.

Crochet, hahaha, that's funny...and how appropriate a pedestian out of nowhere walked across your pristine sand. Maybe your mojo went to Hawaii. Maybe that's where you'll find it. Definately a good choice to be staying "involved" with your craft, and sharing your mood, your thoughts, and your concern with others. I lost my mojo recently, and found myself with nobody to talk to about it. I had sort of lost all my intimate connections; no friend, no associate, no family to talk to...so I went to a licensed therapist, a psychologist. It can be difficult to find an appropriate therapist, and a person sometimes has to interview several of them to find a good fit initially. I used You Tube to help me understand what to look for in a therapist, and what to expect....and what's expected of me. Daniel Mackler, Katie Morten and Jordan Peterson were a few of the KZbin personalities I learned much from. Also Ewan, the following KZbin photographers have shared a bit of their own mental health stories to some degree: Adam Karnacz of First Man Photography, David Dixon, Simon Baxter and Chris Sale and Paul G Johnson to name a few. And there's Joeseph Seagar, Nick Page, Adam Gibbs, Morten Hilmer, Photo Tom, Andrew Marr, Michael Breitung, Jason Jones, Nigel Danson, Paul Compton and Attilio Ruffo to name a few more. As I list these people Ewan, I also think of several other photographers (of KZbin fame) who at least from time to time struggle with the ups and downs of mood and disposition swings. None of us are immune from the stresses of human consciousness. It isn't always easy being a mind in a body, navigating the road to happy destiny. I'm sure I've said too much, and probably I'm misguided, but nevertheless good Sir, I'm heartfelt and sincere. Thank you for your photography Ewan, and for sharing your story with us.

Hey Rick - No, you are all good and i appreciate your commentary. It seems to be one of the characteristics of having some kind of a creative side . Some of the best actors, go up and down like yoyos, and whilst it is just a muddled period for me with regards my commercial output, im fine, and haven't lost my sense of purpose being of humour, which im grateful for. I had noticed that Adam from first man photography touched on this recently too - it must happen to us all at some point. Its probably just called "life" . Doing this vid has had the desired effect in part though as it allows me to be self critical ( I am my own worst critic) and it has helped to allow me to see what i need to start and what i need to stop in order to get my 'focus' back (pun intended)! LOL I have been seriously spoiled with some of the things that i have been fortunate to photograph these last 18 months or so, and i just need ot ensure that i look forward to the next one... and the next one [Images]. Thanks for taking the time to comment though. As I find these video time consuming to put together - i do question the sanity in doing them when im time poor, but they are soo rewarding when good folk like yourself take the time from your own busy schedules, to watch and to comment - so "Thank you"! Regards Ewan

Hi Ewan, like you, I really struggle with the process of capturing it all. You have a promising sunset on the cards and then worry about doing too much - a shot from this angle, a shot that angle. Ultimately, it just leaves you frustrated. Vlogging adds another dimension too that is incredibly time sapping. I quite like a bit of a photo walk and always like to finish the roll, but like the last one I did, it started in good foggy conditions but the sun burned through about half way in. I would have preferred to keep the lovely fog but it's not worth stressing over. Nice bit of feedback from Nat Geo though and I love those colours in your first shot. Keep your pecker up!

Hey Craig - nice to hear from you again. Thomas Heaton once said to me that VLOGS are hard work, and the skill is making them look easy! I think i do over think them a bit and try and do too much during what is my capture time, and that upset the equilibrium between photography and cinematography though (if you can call it that)! It would have been an interesting exercise to have tried this whole thing years ago.. when i was less relaxed and more stressed (most of the time)! LOL I have undergone paralysis by analysis these last few days and i think im making headway with my photogrpahy muddle! Ill keep going. Looking for your next VLOG! E

It's such a common theme amongst photographers, the lack of mojo so you are not alone. Another common occurrence seems to be that vlogging can really impinge on the thought process of taking images, with so much other stuff to include for video etc. It will come back I'm sure. In the meantime congrats on the NG accolade, when you have them knocking your door for an image things can't be all that bad eh? :) I did wonder was the shoot I saw the sand dune images shots I saw a week or so ago , great location it looks like & I think the images worked well. atb.

Hey Alan. I think you may have knocked the nail on the head in one regard and that is the whole vlogging thing potentially disrupting thoughts around the photography angle, which is actually the primary driver for me. I do however really enjoy doing the vids, but im aware (and i have managed to identify this) that i shoot in the light period when the "Belt of Venus' is across the sky and the earths shadow is starting to chase it - so to try and do all that as well as video, VLOG, fly drones, narrate and concentrate - gosh its a lot going on at once. Its not that ill stop doing these vids, but having identified that, i just need to be better prepared and allow myself to work all the other stuff into my vlogging process, with out too much of it getting in the way!. Yeah, the last image - i posted on flickr last week and it wet a bit nuts on there with 104,000 views from fifty five thousand people in the first 24 hours! WTFlip? The Nat Geo thing - yeah, that was incredible and i knew when i saw that image on the live view screen on the camera, that it was really, really nice! Happy times. Now to bag the next one! LOL Thanks Alan Ewan

The first image is amazing. I have also lost my motivation. It's almost two months now when I haven't take any images. I hope I will recover from that loss of motivation.

Hey Urmo - both you and i are simply negotiating the process of 'refocussing' our thoughts i think, ad its just a process of calibration, through which you will come out of the other side with everything entact and probably a deeper insight into what it is we do. I havent really taken images properly for about 2 months eother.... but ot will return, for both of us im sure. @Simon Booth made comment about this being absolutely normal in his comment above. Thanks for the comment. Chin up - we'll be fine! Best wishes Ewan

Being on this platform, seems to create a produce or die effect, leading to the joy of being a digital creative is removed a bit. Look way back to when it was fun and the joy will return. Your creativity and artistic prowess deserve to cause you the pleasure it gives us as subscribers. Your images are very inspiring to me and that camera should never be for sale, it and you are married, for good times and bad. If that is your work on a bad day, never put it away.

Hey Todd. Thanks for your comments and your encouragement. I think you are right - it was the platform that caused the problem as i felt the necessity to produce stuff. I am through the other side now though and feel all the better for it! The camera may come up for sale at some point when i upgrade, as i simply cant justify having two of these systems! LOL Thansk again mate - Its commentary and support like yours, that keep us going! Kindest regards. Ewan

Hi Ewan I hope you do do find your mojo again. I've watched a few of your vlogs and although photography is the main purpose of your doing them, from a viewers perspective seeing the amazing scenery in our 'backyard ' is a bonus. Also FYI I tried crotchet once ... & it was pretty boring!

Hello Ewen, back again. I was giving your predicament some thought and I recall a number of professional vloggers losing their mojo! One of the best things that can be done is to do a collaboration with another vlogger. May I suggest that you invite Thomas Heaton or Brandon van Son to do a workshop with you. It would raise your profile, increase subscriptions and you would receive an awarding experience with other vloggers. It has been done before and it works! I follow over 50 vloggers and learn much from them...

LOL, I have been giving thought to doing a collaboration with someone else, form which you could also learn form them (we are never too cleve, to learn new tricks) . Re TH or BVS - im quite sure that they wouldn't be interested in working with such a minnow. I have a couple of things on the go just now which may place me better to make that approach though. Good thinking and thanks for your thoughts! Cheers mate, Ewan
