I took a return visit to Steetley with a view to getting a few more images. As a place I once lived quite near I've been keen to get an image I love to hang on the wall at home .. You will have to watch to see if I end up satisfied with anything that I've taken or wether or not I will be making another return trip! :-)

Lovely images, Dan! My favorites are the sun shinning through the pier and the one that shows the pier stretching out into the sea with puddles in the foreground. Just liked the composition of these two.

James Brew thanks James yes that's probably my favourite shot of the Bunch. Think that image really needs the tide a lot further up with similar lighting conditions. Maybe some bigger waves to really push the spray through the central section to drag your eyes down there more though.

Enjoyed that a lot Dan, some wonderful light that appeared to be very, very clear. 2:16 is a composition I have not seen before. You mentioned mirrorless and in relation to 10:30 and the changing exposure, god think about my OMD is the Live View mode where I can see the photograph as it develops in real time, ideal for long exposures. Cheers.
@DanPearsonPhoto
@DanPearsonPhoto 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks .. 2.16 is one of those slightly graphic images that really appeals to me. One of my favourites from the day but I think has more potential in better conditions .. pref with a higher tide. I can't get away with mirrorless for pro work but I could for my landscape stuff ... maybe I just need to stop eating crap and get back in the gym lol and stop moaning haha

Hi Dan, I doubt you remember but we met years ago at steetly, when it was still there with the iron workings and the magnasite stuff with the big chimney, you still have your passion for phtography, good vids mate.

Hi Steve I think I know who you are! It's definitely some years ago but yes recall chatting. Real shame that went .. I actually did a few commercial and model shoots on that site and had an image do well in the fine art category in photographer of the year that was shot at Steetley! Definitely still have the passion though .. glad you enjoyed the video's .. I'm hopefully going to find time to produce a lot more content this coming year.

Hi Allan hope you are well! Definitely not my best set Alan in my opinion but thanks for the kind words .. probably some of the better ones from recent Vlogs. I went out with the purpose of shooting an image for the house and have been a couple of times now so vlogging is a distinct second to the image in these scenarios .. no matter how hard you push if you concentrate on the vlog you cant concentrate fully on the image in my eyes. thanks Dan

lol.. I was having a panic attack when you had left all your gear up the beach ! Enjoyable watch and some considered thoughts about the images you were taking. In the final round up the 2nd & 3rd images were the ones I liked most, particularly loved the symmetry in the 3rd image - worked well I thought.

Great pics Dan.. Great location... As for the mirrorless comment, I'd gladly lend you my one camera, one lens, a tripod and a couple of filters for the day to see how you like micro four thirds. Shame you and that pier are miles away lol :o))
@DanPearsonPhoto
@DanPearsonPhoto 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Troy .. sometimes you have to the miles if you want smiles lol. It's the nature of landscape photography! Mirrorless for landscape is a definite consideration for me. I don't think I could use the format day to day for other types of commercial photography simply become of ergonomics but in the pursuit of being lightweight it would help. As I mentioned elsewhere I need to get back in the gym and lose some weight then I might not moan as much lol :-)

Great video description of the possibilities of a single scene from all its angles. Following on IG now. Question: Don't fine Steetley on the map near the sea. Is there another location to find it?
@DanPearsonPhoto
@DanPearsonPhoto 6 жыл бұрын
Stuart if you look for Hartlepool Marina and then look north up the coast. You will see Hartlepool headland and it is just slightly north of there. Turn on satellite images and you will see the pier jutting out into the sea. This area has changed a lot from years ago and they are now starting to build houses there. If you search Steetley Pier in google and then go to Maps that should do it .. or alternatively search Steetley Magnasite .. though it's no longer there. Thanks Dan

Dan, where exactly is Steetley, please? The only Steetley I know is in Hartlepool. I’m having trouble finding it. Thanks.
@DanPearsonPhoto
@DanPearsonPhoto 6 жыл бұрын
Hi yes it is near Hartlepool on the back of the Headland .. there are two routes to the beach .. one from the roundabout near the shops at the bottom of the headland and the other from up the top through the cemetery. You will be able to see the pier on google maps satellite images if you zoom in and will also see the cemetery, Hope that helps!

@DanPearsonPhoto

All of these out my least sharp lens Paul an old 17-40mm .. the gear is mainly irrelevant a lot is technical at the time of taking the shot and also a little post processing skill to pull out the details and sharpness. Generally a little work with tonal contrast and local contrast too to increase perceived sharpness.

Yeah I really didn't have a great relationship with my 17-40L & actually get better images with my Fuji 10-24 but when set up correctly with the right light I shot some of the best images on thee old 17-40.

Hey, Dan! just found your channel and subed. anyway, you were talking about test shooting with the Lee super stopper. I am not sure it works.. but, if you crank up your ISO to 6400, it should be 4 seconds instead of 4 minutes. somebody surely correct me if it's wrong. keep up the great work, Cheers!
@DanPearsonPhoto
@DanPearsonPhoto 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim. Yes adjusting the ISO will adjust the exposure length. The stoppers are designed though to slow down the exposure .. by 6, 10 or 15 stops depending on if its the little, big or super stopper. In this video I started using the little stopper to slow the shutter speed to record a little motion in the waves. As the sun rose above the cloud and was harsh and really bright I moved to the 15 stop Super stopper to get some longer exposures to really make the sea water smooth and ephemeral. I always prefer to keep the ISO as low as possible on these type of shots but don't like my exposures to go much above 6 minutes because of thermal noise on the sensor. If the light levels had dipped I would have dropped down to using the big stopper instead which is 10 stops as opposed to 15 of light reduction. Hope that makes sense :-)

Your editing is spot on Dan. The choice of tones used bring out the scene well. I like the angled look towards the pier with the pools in the foreground as adds a contrast between rigid lines and rounded curves. A great overall experience recorded with some drama and Dan style humour. Felt for that bag being abandoned though. 👍😬

Changing conditions Paul. I shot this from the other side the week before and intended to shoot from the side I arrived on .. however conditions weren't what were predicted or I expected. I had to make a decision and decided to shoot from the other side but without the time to retrace my steps and actually drive round to the other side and walk in again. Sometimes you have to be reactive I think but it did force me to change composition on a couple of the shots :-/
