Landscape Photography in Scotland - Peaceful lochs and scouting the coast

Landscape photography is typically a very relaxed affair where time often appears to stand still - it's just you, a camera and your relationship with the nature that absorbs you. Oh, and perhaps your dog too! This episode begins on the banks of a tranquil Scottish loch in Torridon where the landscape was soft, muted and peaceful. It was a perfect opportunity to re-energise and re-familiarise before meeting up with Thomas Heaton for a very different type of photography shoot on the beach at Mellon Udrigle.
I was meeting Thomas in order to scout the Wester Ross area of Scotland for a workshop that we'll be running next year. The need to cover lots of ground meant that I couldn't adopt my usual slow and deliberate approach to photography, which is why I didn't get a chance to narrate any photographs from the beach. With fading light and a location to document, it was all about quick and impulsive photography.
Meg, whom stole the show (again), will be joining me on Saturday 21st July at the Joe Cornish Gallery. We'll be there from 10:30am if you'd like to come and say hi and take a look at my prints. Look out for my exhibition in September too!

Scotland is looking beautiful. I would imagine that scouting in summer for winter woodland scenes is not that easy. It would be so nice to "pop in" to all your events but alas from South Africa it would be a bit of a "trek" as we say. Nevertheless we do have woodlands and seascapes here so everything you teach via the internet is most appreciated. I loved the "gut" shots you took at the beach. It goes to show your gut is also a reliable barometer. Your co-host Meg is a very talented comic and always makes waves one way or another :)

Every time I watch your videos, I think of how I started photography back then. Not because of the quality of the photos but because I always had my dogs with me. Watching the dog jump through the picture, rolling in the grass ... In relation to the motive you found, I would have walked past the first with the cows. Hope you were careful, that beach is right across the bay from Gruinard Island which is where the military used to test Anthrax on sheep. Loved the video, calming, informative and so relaxing. Makes me miss Scotland tremendously while I’m sitting here in the heat of the Saudi desert !
