I've been a bit nervous about this video but I've always tried to keep my videos & photography personal and honest, so this episode is no different. My background, previous experiences, injury, bad times, good times and Meg are fundamental to my landscape and woodland photography - right down to where I shoot, what I see and how I capture it, so I figured it was important to share the journey in a nutshell. Trust me, it's been far from easy, but KZbin and the support on other platforms has enabled me to make this leap and hopefully I'll have enough luck to make it work and change my life in a very positive way.
Thank you again for your support and I hope you stick around to see what happens next! We're fast approaching autumn and I can't wait :-)

UPDATE 19th Aug: "Wow, your responses and support have been terrific! Thank you very much! I'm still very busy running workshops but I'm replying to as many comments as and when I can. Many thanks for sharing your own stories and kind words!!" It makes me a bit nervous to put myself out here like this, so go easy ;-) However, I'm sure some of you can relate to this and if just one person feels inspired to go out there and take pictures to make themselves feel better, then it's worth it! Thanks again, you've been amazing! Please feel free to ask any questions in the comments. Please see the links in the description for my exhibition and prints. Oh, I forgot to mention - I'll be presenting at a speaking event in early September (see link in description).

It's touching to watch a honest vlog like that. I know what you mean with meg, I got one of my dogs when I was really struggling with my mental health and she got me out and about, sadly my dogs are now with my ex wife but I find getting out with the camera just helps keep my head clearer.

I might've missed it if you mentioned it, but was it a mountain biking injury? I've heard several injury stories from mountain biking and it's also the only time I've come very close to serious injury, and each story sorta makes me hesitant to continue it, or at least keep it toned down.

Simon. A bit off topic, but consider trying out sleeping in a hammock without spreaders. I was born with a mild scoliosis and spent years in the US military carrying tons of gear in a backpack. I've suffered for decades with a sore and painful back. While it seems counter-intuitive, sleeping in a hammock spreads pressure points over your entire body and actually gently stretches the spine. I've been without pain for 2 years now!

Simon, your vulnerability and fragility show up in your highly emotional photographs. You chose the hard path of emotionality in nature as you yourself have experienced in your own life. You have achieved what few artists can, staying humble and sensitive to the world around you which costs a great deal from an ego standpoint. I admire you and the choices you have made to stay open to hardship and the honorable essence of it so skillfully demonstrated in your intuitive photography.

Aw that’s a great story Simon. I have a similar one. I used to kayak, Mtn bike, hike, lift weights, ride a motorcycle, and more until 2010 when some strange neck, shoulder, and skeletal problems started to occur. It took me 5 years of hell to find out what was wrong with me and I ended up doing medical retirement from my sit down gov’t job. After being treated like crap by many Canadian doctors and being judged by my weight gain from being unable to be active, I finally found an excellent doctor that “got” me. I wrote him a long letter to explain who I was and could he take me on. After reading my letter he was happy to have me as a client. I had just gotten into digital photography in 2014 and that was my salvation and did for me what it did for you. If you can believe it, my Dr is into photography too. Now that I am getting better, my Dr visits are almost just chats, catch ups, and sharing pictures and photography stories. 😄 It’s amazing how many people I’ve met that have said photography has saved their life. Cheers!

I can relate to this in a big way. I didn't have a physical injury, but severe anxiety and depression. Photography has become a reason to get up and get out, and to be able to do the things I love again which is being in nature. Thanks for videos Simon, really helps to hear about others going through their own struggles.

I can totally relate to this Simon. Discovering a love for photography has helped me cope with depression for the last 12 months. Great, helpful videos 👍

No idea how many characters youtube will afford me her. Simon, I can't thank you enough. I've recently undergone very invasive brain surgury. And I am no longer the person. I was. You have been an inspiration to me in my drive to photograph nature and my small town. You e taught me to. Be still and thoughtful with my compositions. Find a quiet place in what's left of my mind. Thsnk you for your kind disposition. And non-judgemental or gimmicky teaching process. Your channel is very approachable. You are a great teacher. Thsnk you.

I can completely relate to your story. I lost my career because of my health and chronic pain. Photography for me came about because I needed to learn how to take good photos to work on a cookbook I wanted to write. I could no longer cook professionally so I was trying to find a way to hold onto my passion. But I discovered through photography that photography is in fact a passion and a way for me to express my creativity. It felt the same way cooking does. When I go out to shoot my pain melts away, time melts away. I'm just getting started but one day I will be a fine art photographer and chronic pain is what I can owe that new dream and life focus to. Thank you for sharing!

On a different note a very good video I am a subscriber and I also love Mr Thomas Heaton. I wish I could talk to you privately and who knows it might help, I envy you immensely you have no idea how this video has lifted my spirits. Chronic pain is the worst affliction ever 24/7. You're going to make it in this business as you see it first as the appreciation for your subject and not the sales. Sales are important but if it's not in your soul the photography is lost. Simon, thank you for putting this out there. I'm also going through a similar experience. I fell on black ice 2 1/2 years ago at work resulting in 2 bulging discs and major leg pain. Since then it's been a whole gamut of the textbook fix him up stuff that fails and ultimately irritates the injury. Doctor's have finally started saying I'm not going to get better, but the US healthcare / insurance systems drags things on for what feels like an eternity in limbo. During this time I've slowly sold off my kayaks, bikes etc and started to get back into photography. It's my get out of the house and do something hobby. I can't walk far most days so that forces me to look closer at all things big and small. I have no idea why I am broadcasting this to the world other than being inspired by your video. I've recently started to get into making videos to add some variety to my methods of distraction. I was debating on making a similar video to what you posted but keep deleting the footage. I do not want it to be a poor me video, but figure if I end up growing a channel people should have some idea of what to expect. Thanks for the added inspiration!!!!!!

Congratulations on being full time and for progressing through your situation. What I find interesting is that our stories are very similar. I'm a System Tester, I got an injury from Kickboxing which lasted about 4-5 years and put me in a similar headspace. I didnt find photography until nearer the end of my injury but it gave me something to focus on. I believe some pain of my injury was mental and the photography helped me move on from it. I'd lost motivation to get out and take some photos but after watching this and it reminding me of everything, I'm now excited to get back out and take some snaps. Thanks!

Great personal story Simon, not dark but inspirational thank you for your openness, its good to know you over came your injury through photography and have now turned your passion into your career. I love your images with the mist and cloud and the videos featuring Meg. The images with trees in mist have a wonderful moody feel to them, it makes me want to go out and find some forest or bush to take a wander through. Maybe I'll take a camera... Your site has become one of my favourites to learn from and enjoy the images. Thank you. Peter.

Great episode Simon! I'm glad to see you making it with your incredible photography. I can definitely relate to your pain, as I'm a disabled navy veteran, and when I got injured in the military, my life (as I knew it then) was totally over. It took a long time for me to build myself back up both physically and mentally, and luckily I made my own photography business (and now KZbin) happen. Never would have thought it'd turn out like this, but stoked that it did. Congrats on your success, both in business and in overcoming your personal struggles, it's beyond well deserved!

I stumbled on to your channel at the start of your KZbin journey. I have been watching ever since. Looking forward to a lot more great videos. Good luck on your photography / KZbin journey. Hi Simon , Great video as always . Everything you said about your back injury is true . I suffer from chronic pain also due to a back injury . It turned my life upside down , Couldn't return to my job of 15yrs and went from a active person that spent 3hrs a day at the gym to sitting around ... And then i got into photography 2yrs ago , now my camera is always with me and i take every chance i can get to go out and explore . Keep up the great work :-)

Simon, hurrah for you. I, like others who have posted similar comments, messed up my back about a year and a half ago. I am still not at a point where I can handle a DSLR for long, let alone a camera and tripod (and a backpack full of "stuff"), but your video is a great inspiration for us to carry on and make the best of the situation. Good luck and Godspeed!!

Just watch the video above. I can't relate to the physical pain you suffer but I do know he emotional pain you went through. I have had a continuous fight with depression since I was 15 years old. I have a gluten free life, and it was a revelation to me in dealing with it. For me, once I realized that living is a painful experience, I was/am able to cope a lot more. The landscape, hiking is were I feel connected and is my church. Thanks for being so candid, keep plodding on pal.

Photography is the ONLY 'thing' that takes my mind off work - running my own business it completely consumes me, but my camera and going into the woods completely relaxes my mind and I get back behind the computer full of energy and recharged! Great video Simon.

I came to your channel via Thomas Heatons and this video gave me hope for getting back into my photography. Over the last few years my ankle held me back from going to some of the most amazing places in my area (south west of western Australia) I gave up on landscape because of all the walking. Right now I am recovering from ankle fusion and will be wheelchair bound for two months then eventually be on the road to recovery. Seeing your story made me think ahead and I really look forward to returning to landscapes, I dont have plans to be a full time photographer, its just a hobby and I sell a few. I enjoy watching a number of photographers online, especially those of you in UK, your landscapes are so different to ours. I look forward to seeing your future work....

What attracted me and made me hit that Subscribe button ever since your firsts uploads, was the authenticity and modesty with which you'd dressed them up. And naturally being a dog lover myself .....Jumpy Meg!! I am doing a bit of landscapes myself, my real passion is wildlife and BIF. Then it is Macro photography. I Find that landscapes, wildlife and Macro go hand in hand Simon, just saying , maybe a new horizon you could explore and keep you busy...er?? Whatever man I wish you great health and happiness and success in your new profession. One thing is for certain, that for as long as you keep the uploads coming I for one will be enjoying them. Thanks for sharing and God bless you guys !!! Keep walking we are following.

Morning Simon, Thanks so much for this. I apologise as I only found your channel today, but your story really rang home to me. I have been a police officer for 22 years, and about 12 years ago had an injury to my back, which has now removed me from my operational front line work that I loved so much. I got into photography in 2012 after a friend loaned me a camera to get some family shots, and I have been hooked since. However about 12 months ago, I lost my MoJo and I am trying to get back into it again. I have been watching the channel from James Popsys and saw you recommended on there, which led me to you. Listening to your story has helped me to get back out there, dust off my kit and start again, so thank you SO MUCH... SUBSCRIBED RIGHT AWAY !!!!

Wow! Firstly congratulations on finding a new career and passion despite ongoing adversity. I think many people, myself included, can relate to losing their sense of identity because of chronic mental or physical challenges. The story of your personal journey is very inspiring. Social media can mislead one into believing that everyone, except oneself, leads idyllic lives because no-one shares perceived "weakness". But your story is truly one of great strength and determination to find a new life path. Thank you for sharing and all the best going forward :)

Everyday I come home from my construction job and I do one of two things, either grab my camera bag and tripod then head out somewhere to take photo's or I hop on youtube to see if you've posted something new. You see, I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and our forests are very wild and thick, which makes it difficult to separate a single subject from everything else. So I began watching your video's to learn how to tackle woodlands and not only have I learned how to do do so, but I thoroughly enjoy just simply watching your video's and hearing about whats happening with you in your life. Keep up the good work Simon...we're all eagerly awaiting your next video.

Fantastic news, Simon, congratulations. I've loved watching your videos, I'm very, very new to photography, especially landscape photography and your work in woodland is inspirational, in the same way as Thomas's and Nigel's work in the larger landscapes has inspired me. So thank you for that! Your story is heartwarming, especially how you and Meg came together, she's a star and I love seeing her upstage you! My two go everywhere with me, if they can't go there, or climb it, I don't go. Their simple company during what can be a really solitary hobby is amazing! Keep on keeping on 😊

I also have constant back pain from a prolapsed disc so I can relate to the vlog. I push myself through the pain but every time I walk long distances with my camera back pack for a couple of days afterwards I am as stiff as a board. I won’t give up as I love this hobby so much. I have to say I am so happy to see that your back on a regular basis. 👍

Similar story to myself Simon. I had a serious motorcycle accident where I crushed 3 vertebrae in my spine. Before that I led an active lifestyle like yourself but all that stopped overnight. My wife suggested landscape photography. Although I am not at the same level as yourself it gets me out the house and meeting new people. One of my good friends now is Mark Denton, pro landscape photographer. Keep up the good work ..

Had you not had to travel that painful road, both physically and mentally, we would have been the poorer. A thousand people could walk through the same woods and not be able to see what you see. The mood, the drama, the story in a scene. Thank you for showing us the simple beauty you see through your eyes. Keep doing what you do, good luck with the full time commitment.
