5D Mark IV. I personally prefer a good DSLR. Not saying I would not want a mirrorless, I've tried a few, but I could not say it would be my 1st go to camera, I still prefer the chunky feel of the DSLR.

Hello Attilio, I use a Fujifilm X-T3 since 2018, my next jump when I could afford it, is going to be.... Yes we guess it Medium Format. By then the Fuji ecosystem it could be more affordable.

I do use a Canon 6d (the old one), should I shift to Nikon z5, because that is the one which I can afford? The dynamic range and resolution both are low in 6d. What is your suggestion?

Hi Attilio, I love your rationale but I went ahead and acquired the new Fujifilm GFX100S with the Fujinon 23mm (equivalent to 18mm in FF). I upgraded from the Sony FF system and I must say so far I'm loving it. One caveat though, editing 102 megapixels camera files will certainly put the strain on your existing Mac... so that's another thought before considering a medium format. Good Luck!

When the urge to 'upgrade' my camera hits I simply look at the work from the great photographers of the past and the equipment used and quickly realise that it is the photographer that needs the upgrade.Keep producing those wonderful images with your D810/20 mm,have an exhibition and casually ask guests what camera they were taken with,it never fails.Good luck with your decision.

I have a Z7 myself. One of the main reasons I bought a mirrorless is access to the z mount lenses. The 14-24mm s lens is simply magnificent. For landscape photography and for those serious about their craft, I consider this a must have. It's quite expensive and I'm still paying mine off LOL. But the fine details you can get out of it makes a big difference when printing large canvasses.

Excitedly waiting for your long exposure coarse. I own a D850. I am seriously considering going back to a D810. I think the 36mp sensor is the point of diminishing return for F-mount glass. If I were to go mirrorless I'd go medium format, probably a system with a leaf shutter. I think the ability to use flash outdoors and not worry about shutter speed is important to creating images that are different.

My sensei would say “To many minds not good” leads to total confusion and possible death. The answers lies in your first thoughts because subconsciously your first thought is the correct answer. You need to clear your mind then you’ll be able to see the bottom. The photos you take is the spiritual side of yourself so therefore it a very simple decision 🙏

The more things change the more they stay the same. I remember, many years ago, I bought my first "real" camera. It was a beautiful Nikon F2 35mm film camera. It was everything I could ever want in a camera. A few years later all the buzz was, " 35 mm is nice, but you have to go to medium format." " It blows 35mm out of the water." Forty-five years later, here we go again !!!

For landscape photography, the Fuji GFX medium format series seems like the way to go. You get a reasonably sized mirrorless body, either 50 or 100 megapixels, and Fuji film simulations. As someone who shoots Nikon (D800), Sony (A6600), and Fuji (XT2) I must admit that I love the ability to change film simulations in the camera (Fuji). Even though I shoot raw, having the ability to create beautiful JPEGS in the camera to share with clients and social media before I get home is really a plus. Any new mirrorless will require new lenses unless you want to use adapters, so the GFX system seems like it will give you the best bang for your buck in the long run. Nikon has had a lot of financial challenges over the past two years which is worrisome. Personally, the main thing I don't like about DSLRs is to remember to shut the viewfinder when doing long exposure photography, otherwise, your D810 is still a great machine.

YOU are absolutely right. Camera can help you upto some regard, if u know the photography. Newer cameras can b deal breaker for those who are doing wedding, journalism, sports and wildlife. But like me guys who are doing the job inside the location where u use light and tripod. It hardly matters. Still I am using Canon 5SR. Recently I bought 1 more body of Canon 5DS at mint condition in throwaway price. 50 mega pixels is enough for my style of work.

@@Gundolf300 Yes, exactly. As the straight man in the audience would ask, "How superior is it?" Need a head to head comparison of the Z body and equivalent 20mm lens against the 810 and current 20, to look for discernible and meaningful improvement. At what magnification is it evident? Under what light conditions? Wasn't that covered, as it uses the same sensor?

I watched this video back when you first put it out. At that time, I wasn’t looking at upgrading or changing my gear. Since then, I have decided, after taking a long hard look at my situation, the market and the direction that photography appears to be heading. As you referenced your other video about the D810 vs the D850, I was shooting with a D850 at that time. I shot with my DF800 for 8 years and my D850 for 6 years. Well, 3 months ago, I bought a Z9. I have since also almost completely swapped all my F mount lenses for Z mount lenses. I have 2 more to swap and I will be done with my new setup. I am happy with my Z9. I Looked at the Z7ii, but I decided that since I want to get back into sports photography again and that I also do wildlife photography the 20fps really helps me on both of those fields. I have actually downsized the amount of gear I have since going mirrorless. However, one lens I did make sure I kept in my bag was the 20mm. That is my primary long exposure lens and I also use it for non long exposure as well. It also happens to be the second sharpest lens in my bag. Second only to my Z70-200mm f2.8 S. It is because of you that the 20mm prime will always be in my bag. I thank you for that. You opened me up to a new style of photography that I never had even thought about. Now, because of the knowledge I have gained thru your videos and my trials and errors, I have been able to apply those techniques to other type of photography and people who watch my work have noticed. I Thank You for your videos and hope you continue to do well and continue to bring them to us.

Attilio, I am in for the long exposure course. I cannot wait! I use the Sony AIVR camera. It is light, excellent resolution and functions beautifully. The weight of the lens system is significant. I totally enjoy using the systems and the resolutions creat a beautiful image. pixel shift technology in the camera can creat a very large detailed file from which enormous prints can be made. I own a D810 and love it and still use it. I won a Canon 7d in a contest years ago. I eventually bought some lenses for it as well. I hate to get rid of anything so I have both systems. Anyway I bought a Canon R5 mirrorless instead of the Nikon Z System because I liked the features of the Canon better and the Z system was at the time a little behind the Canon system. Besides all the things you mentioned, lightness and size being at the top, I like behind the lens filters, again smaller and lighter. I like images stabilization in camera. I especially like wifi which allows me to do wireless tethering and also allow my phone to control and live view images on the camera. These features plus the ones you mentions are a big step up for me. Not so much better images or image quality but convenience features to me. Instead of flipping the screen up when the camera is at ground level, using the phone or laptop wirelessly to compose and shoot is very helpful now I am getting older. Touch screen on the back of the camera or using the cellular phone touch screen to change things like ISO/shutter speed instead of looking for buttons on the camera is very convenient. I shoot birds in flight and sports action and eye focus is just amazing. I think it is time to move to mirror-less here shortly. I would tell fellow photographers to wait for prices to come down and for more 3rd party lens support so you don't spend so much money upgrading.

I am presently using two Pentax, the 645Z , medium format and the K1-II, a full frame. Yes, I switched from the previous APC Pentax models and yes, there is a difference in many positive aspects. I don't need to be worried about many of the "old" lenses. Pentax is wonderful about this. As for the 645Z all I can say is wonderful things about it. I even use it for Astrophotography! The results are amazing. The advantage of the Pentax K1-II is with the built-in Astrotracer. And I will start using is in slow shutter photography as well. For landscapes, the 645z is a wonderful tool, indeed with it's 51 megapixels sensor.

I first picked up an SLR camera in my early 20’s when I was about to embark on my very first overseas trip. This was around 1994 and the camera was a Minolta XG-1 film SLR. I didn’t purchase it new, I purchased it from a Cash Converters in Rockhampton for less than $100. Remember this amount. I really enjoyed this camera. I had no training in using an SLR camera yet the focussing was intuitive. I remember coming home after 2 ½ weeks travelling the highlands and lowlands of Papua New Guinea as well as some of the out islands of West New Britain with many rolls of Fujifilm ISO400 and getting them developed. Very few of the photos were out of focus. My next adventure was in 1997 when I travelling to New Zealand for a 6 week tramping expedition. Again, the Minolta XG-1 came along for the ride. I still look at these shots and imagine if I had today’s camera back then. It was about this time I put my camera down (I can’t remember what happened to that camera) I got married and had children. The video camera was the be-all and end-all at this time of our lives. The Sony 8mm video camera when everywhere with us I suppose this is why I simply forgot about the SLR and its whereabouts. Fast forward 20 years, digital photography has progressed to such high quality. At the end of 2017, I entered an Instagram competition for a Ricoh Theta V 360 camera which I won. 2018 saw my love of photograph reignited. I set out to learn more about this particular medium of photography as well as undertaking a 365 project ( A 365 project is where you do something every day of the year). My 365 project was documented on Instagram under the name @like_a_big_pizza_pie/ The Ricoh Theta V was such an outlet for me. At the end of 2018, I started looking at a DSLR. Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Sony. So many names, pros and cons with each. I searched on Ebay, Cash converters, and Facebook Marketplace. Eventually, I settled on a Nikon 1 V1 - an early model mirrorless camera, for $112. That price is similar to what I paid for the Minolta 20 years ago. This was not the DSLR I was looking for, however, it was fun and intuitive. I now use this camera along with extension tubes for macro photography. I became a member of multiple Facebook Groups and found a mentor willing to help me understand my new camera. He was based in Melbourne and I was in Brisbane. He was very patient and did his own research on the Nikon 1 series and was able to help me learn my new camera. I was given weekly assignments, created a website to upload them to and he would critique them for me. We went through settings so I could start to understand the tool in my hand and what it was capable of doing. A year after purchasing the Nikon 1 V1, I just happened to see a Nikon D300 for sale for $97. It had the original box but had a broken battery door. I knew I could source one from eBay cheaply. I purchased the camera online, sight unseen. It arrived at the same time the new battery door arrived. I had no lens for this camera. I really do believe in serendipity. I happened to see on Facebook Marketplace a broken Nikon F60 body along with working 28-80mm and a 70-300mm AF lens for $50. An absolute steal. I mounted a lens on the D300 and turned on the camera for the first time. It snapped to attention, focussed quickly and attentively. I took my first shot. I was hooked. I found out the D300 only had a shutter count of 28000. In the last year through covid, I have purchased some more lens for my D300. They have been a Tokina 11-16 mm F/2.8 ($400), Tokina 28-70 f/2.8 MK! ($50) this was an incredible bargain, Nikkor 50 mm f/1.8 ($80) and a Nikkor 80-200 mm f/2.8 MkII ($40) in very rough condition My outlier is the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 for $400. Taking that out of the mix, all of my lenses are sub $100. They are generally older lens but they are all glass and metal. I often wonder if I had a newer camera and lens whether my photography would improve, if so, by how much? The D300 was a semi-professional camera when it was announced in 2007. The specs were great. The camera still takes great shots today. One thing I learnt from my mentor is to know the limits of your camera. The D300 is not known for its low light capabilities. I know this now. But when the light is out, I know I can get great shots. My story is not one that the marketing team from any Camera House would want to embrace as they need to sell more units. They want you to upgrade and I get that. But if you want to get into photography, you don’t have to spend a lot of money, however, you will need to spend a lot of time knowing and understanding your equipment. I will eventually upgrade to something newer. I can be occasionally be seen looking at the Nikon D810, D4 and the Z6 and Z7 and hoping that one will be for sale for $100 🤔🤣 If you want to follow my story, my Instagram handle is @mrwwarner

I was on the same boat too Atillio. I have bought my Z7 about 1.5yrs ago and I do not look back at all. Video is superb too but not as good as a Z6, which I own too. You are right regarding the FTZ adaptor it does take away some of the advantages. The Z lenses though are far better in my opinion than the F lenses but you don't have to buy them all at once and this is good. There are some banding issues sometimes, if you underexpose significantly but a landscape photographer wouldn't do that as there will be issues with noise. But 2-3 stops of underexposure, if you ever need it, is very possible. In case you underexpose by 4-5 stops there is a work around this one too. Ergonomics are also excellent. Having the histogram on the EVF was a game changer for me as I hate using live view as I need reading glasses. The best way for you to decide on the camera is to try it, either on a short term hire or by just go to a camera shop and try it, if you can do that. A medium format is indeed a better option but the cost is at least double for the camera and the lenses too.

I am 68 yo photograph and I just got medium format Hasselblad X1D II with a 45 mm f4 and a 80 mm f1.9 lenses 6 months ago. I got many Nikon, Leica and Fuji full frames. I have sold all of my Nikon and Fuji bodys and lenses after one month shooting with my Hasselblad. Dont wait to get too old and do it. For your photo style you dont need fast focus and 20-30 frame per seconds camera. What I also like about the Hasselblad is the strong resistant body. Much more strongest than Fuji witch is made of a very cheap molded metal that can break anytime when set on a tripod with a heavy lens. Go for it.

Hi Attilio, I believe the medium format would be your best option as it may improve on your work as you pointed out...it can affect the most important parts of your photography and that's what would matter most. Perhaps you can ask a vendor to do a review of their medium format camera for free on your channel so you can do a real life comparison with their camera and your current camera. A live field test would get great! I'm thinking of switching to medium format before I buy my next camera. I use Sony Alpha Mark 2 right now and tempted to upgrade to Sony AR4, but medium format is attractive for all the reasons you gave earlier. Hope this helps! I'm still working on the 1st long exposure assignment!

Hey Attilio, I am an old guy too. I owned analog Nikons, then D200, D700, and I bought a D850 3 years ago. Familiar UX, and impressive image quality. Then I started to buy better and expensive Nikon lenses and then my D850 broke. I couldn’t get it repaired in Turkey where I ive. I couldn’t travel due to pandemic and tried a Fuji XT-3. I found it to be the easiest and most practical camera ever with its retro interface. The image quality is not on par with my D850 but If I had to upgrade I would most probably upgrade to new smaller and more affordable medium format Fuji GFXS 100. I understand you are also considering that. Happy shooting.

I went from a D800 to the Z7 about two years ago. I was initially put off by the small size of the camera (I always used a grip on my D800). What got me thinking was that I saw a picture of a Z7 next to an F3. I used an F3 back in the day and had no problem with the size (I had come from an F2). So, next I went to the camera store and actually handled one; and found I liked the size. Yes, it was a change, but since I like to travel (and it's getting harder and harder to travel by air with a camera), I was willing to take the learning curve to a smaller camera. With regards to lenses, the S-Line lenses blow away the F mount lenses (for example, DXO just rated the 85mm f1.8: "Although the price might look a little precipitous for an f/1.8 lens, it ranks alongside the best from Zeiss, Canon, and Sony and is one of the finest fixed focal length primes available at any price"). It's a stunning lens. Going from 36MP to 45 doesn't seem like much .... until you get it into Lightroom. The Z7 images are cleaner than the D800, much sharper and the amount of recovery from the shadows is amazing. All in all, I have no regrets going to the Z7.

I've got the Z6, and I like it more than the DSLRs I had before for the shooting experience (I really like the EVF, which surprised me). Being able to see the histogram in the viewfinder and see a moderately accurate preview of the exposure in-camera (not on the back screen) as I shoot is much better than I thought it would be. It's also very stable and more forgiving of camera movement, and also supports me making wildlife, portrait, and video work as well as landscape. The Z glass is very, very good and the FTZ is actually pretty seamless in my limited experience. It doesn't make much difference, and f-mount lenses work exactly like they did on my DSLRs - I honestly haven't noticed any difference, except my old 50D that no-longer autofocuses, which is fine for what I use it for. But, I'm also watching medium-format (well, just Fuji) getting more and more usable and almost affordable. It's tempting, but is it tempting in the next year or two? I don't make my living from photography, so I can't justify any kind of jump from the Z6 to a medium-format system (especially the lenses!). And, the Z6 does everything I want it to, it doesn't limit what I want to achieve right now. The only thing I'm tempted to upgrade is to the Z7 simply to print bigger images, but that's not actually necessary right now. Can you rent a couple of Fujis and see how they feel to shoot? A long rent, like a month, might be expensive, but probably not ridiculous compared with buying the lenses you'd need. That might let you scratch the itch and find out if you like the experience _and_ the outcome of a MF setup without committing.

I have been using several brands and several models of Nikon for several decades. After switching to Nikon Z, the quality of the images, especially the dynamic range changed massively. For sure end of the day, it's your choice. I know you'll say it not the tools, the mind of the artist is everything behind the art. I can't disagree with that. But yet tools matter. In the beginning, I purchased the kit lens with my Nikon Z, and then slowly I sold my other Nikon lenses, getting new Z lenses. Those Z lenses are also awesome, a little pricey though. Now it's almost 2 years since I'm using my Z, I must say, I'm very much satisfied. Battery life also doesn't matter much, as I have 5-6 batteries in my stock. The new memory card is also much faster. I never felt so comfortable doing my passion before my Z.

Hey Attilio. You have a very clear vision on your photography needs. That's true that switching to a camera with the same dynamic range will not bring to much value for the landscape photography. On the weight point of you the heavier part of the system are lenses. High performance lenses tend to be big and heavy. A mirrorless body weighs on average 650g (+/-100) and lenses much more. I'm still struggling to build a lightweight kit for my fullframe camera. So consider a lens kit that you're are going to use. Maybe you should get a better vision on your video needs. As far as I know your main concern with the Panasonic G85 is unreliable autofocus. If you keep your DSLR maybe you can just get a compact Sony or Canon camera for video that can make a job done. In general we need a FF camera for video for lowlight and shallow depth of field. A cinema industry is still hugely using APSC sensors. In order to get the full dynamic range of the camera in video mode you'll need to shoot in Log. Rec709 covers approximatively 6 stops. Medium format cameras look pretty interesting but they are pricey and lenses are heavy. Good luck for making a choice ! By the way I'm still shooting on old Sony A7RII and I didn't upgrade to the newer models for the same reason as you.

I have done photography for 40 years. I went to photography school in 1990 to 1992. I worked in a camera store for years. Back then I only did landscapes. So when a I was able to get a great deal on a medium format camera, I grabbed it. The difference was amazing. I then got a deal on a large format 4x5 camera. I loved it. But I used the medium format the most. Saying all this to say, if you can financially afford medium format, do it. You could always rent a system first to try it out. But I would be shocked if you didn't love it. There is more to them than just more megapixels. I strongly suggest you try one. If I win the lottery I will have one no doubt. Right now I could not afford a battery for that camera. I look forward to see what you do.

I am waiting impatiently for your long exposure course too...Attilio, I just switched to Fujifilm X series after being a Canon user for 30 years. I was going to switch to the Canon mirrorless but when I added up the cost of all the new glass I just couldn't justify the purchase. I felt using my older EF glass wouldn't serve the new sensor in the R series and replacing my five lenses with the new RF lenses was too much money for what I was gaining. I did want a lighter setup so I went form a full frame DSLR to APS-C Mirrorless. I am still adjusting both to the camera function, sensor size and mirrorless. So far, I have mixed feelings about my switch from Canon to Fuji, but I love the lenses and the tactile feel of the camera. It had a long relationship with Canon cameras so it's more nostalgia than it is function that makes me feel that way.The color and dynamic range is fantastic too. I do love the Nikon Z cameras too so if you go that way, seems like you will not be disappointed. I do have to say, this... it won't really matter what you get for a replacement or if you stay with your current camera and lenses, it's you that makes the art, not the camera.

Speaking from 55 years as a photographer, I would just say that I sold my D810 about a year and a half ago and bought a Canon EOS-R, even though the new model would later come out. After several DSLR's, I like my mirrorless camera and have been happy with the results, although I agree with the commenters who point out that it is the photographer behind the viewfinder who makes the great picture. Those who can see light are able to create great images. After owning every system except SONY, I would say that my favorite camera was my Pentax medium format film camera. Sorry I ever sold it. Since you inspired me originally to buy the D810, and you have many actuations left, I would stick with the camera that you love already. The grass isn't always greener.........

Hi Attilio! I'm looking to switch from D7100 camera to Z7 too. I really appreciate your point of view in the video! I bought a couple of years ago a tiny Sony A6000 for few bucks and I discover a new world of features that helps me to take ..not better photo, but to take them easily! First of all, you can see the realtime histogram both on display and evf when you're composing the shoot.. not bad my friend.. Second one, the EVF, woo amazing toy.. you can see all the data and settings you are using. You can also see photo composition preview when changing parameters.. amazing for me! But, I found in sony some cons: first of all ergonomics.. buttons, menus (not customizable), tiny hand grip, more risk for dust and humidity changing lenses in the field.. and few more. Now in my mind I've the idea that for my photography probably i need a mirrorless with the nikon's menu and ergonomics aaaaand Booom.. Z7 seems the solution😬

Hi Attilio, I have been a Nikon user for over 40 years, loved my D810 and then my D850, but my backpack just kept getting bigger and bigger. I took the plunge just over a year ago with the Z7 and recently added the new Z7II all I will say is I love them and the Z lenses are superb, the clarity, sharpness, and handling are just a joy. I am getting beautiful 36"X24" prints with great depth and clarity, recently had several 60"x40" prints done, and again terrific. I would give them some serious thought.

Looking forward to your long exposure course. I too have the bug to buy a new camera and have been going through the same thought processes as you. With Covid camera stores here in Ontario, Canada, are currently not open for in store shopping and that has kept me from moving ahead. I need to hold in my hands the cameras that I am interested in and not just go by specs. The appeal of a shutterless camera for me in the in camera stabilization (I am talking solely about Nikon). As you travel down this road I hope you will continue to share your thoughts on this subject. As always, all the best to you.

I just went through this. I too am Nikon shooter and had investment in Tamron 70-200 f2.8, tamron 150-600, and Tokina 16-35 f2.8. I ended up trading several primes, various lenses I had accumulated and my Nikon D750 for a Z7 with FTZ and 24-70 f4. I love using the adaptor, it is lightweight and generally no impact, maybe manual use, but with landscape not a big deal. This let me break it into camera first and glass second. I love the new setup. More MP does mean more storage and longer edit times, but so worth it

I am your fan and have watched almost all your videos. Although I currently use Sony’s A7r2 and A7r3, I am also a Nikon enthusiast. I have used D3400, D610, D750, D810, and started using Nikon Z7 in 2018. , overall, Nikon cameras are more suitable for shooting landscapes than Sony. I also think I should wait until the Nikon Z73, which may be equipped with a 61-megapixel sensor, is launched before upgrading.

Excuse me ignoring your question in my last post! I start to writing before it. I switches to full frame A7rII a few years ago, for about one year I had a very cheap offer for a used A7rIII in very good condition, so with selling my old camera I just have to pay about 150€ to change, that was ok for me this time. My wife use the APS-C line (two lenses and a A6400 I love because of its outstanding AF) further, so I can use it further too. When I switch to fullframe I don't recognize, that the camera is compact, but how much the lenses are bigger and heavier than on APS-C. I would never go back to DSLR, not only in sight of the size, but in sight of usability. The "What you see is what you get" of viewfinder and display I never will miss, I see no advance in using a mirror, where you just see a picture with full open aperture (or you close it but its getting dark). Only for landscape photography I would really think about the Fuji gfx100s, with its outstanding sensor and a resolution of 100MP in a compact size! But the lenses get bigger and bigger with that medium format cameras, and really: When I look at my 42MP and crop in, I see more that I need in A3 or A2 prints and I am really lucky every time I look at these files. I don't just photograph landscape, also street and people, where I wish I had an A1, but that is really not worth the price, so I stay lucky with my A7rIII for the next years! But if I where in your shoes, and I don't have a problem with switching the whole system, carrying big lenses, processing 100MP files and also having the money (a part will be come from selling your "old" stuff), then I would think about the Fuji. That would not be my decision, I don't need more than 50MP for landscape and not more than 24-30Mp for all other, so I would buy a Z7 in your shoes, but the Mark 2, because of it's improvements - I use my cameras often long time, buy it normally used in good condition with a bit of guarantee left, so I would save myself a bit from further desires :-)) If your sure, that the improvements over the Z7 is not really interesting for you, go with the z7 and you will fall in love first and then love her for a long time!

I used to have a Nikon. I ran into a Leica store while on vacation and tried the SL2 and the medium format s007,just to see what the hype was about with Leica and I was hooked. I sold my Nikon and haven’t looked back since. The Colors, the lenses (my goodness) are phenomenal!! They are not a mass market camera company thus the prices are higher, but sitting here looking at Leica SL2, it’s been worth every penny.

Hi Attilio Very much enjoy your videos...Excellent work...You raised a very interesting point in that is it worth switching from DSLR to mirrorless.. I guess everybody has their own personal reason(s) to switch and here are my reasons...I'm a canon user who was quite happy with the 5D Mkiv...when the canon r came out, I didn't see the value in changing. But when the canon r5 came out everything changed.. 1) IBIS In body stabilization..LOVE IT and coupled with Image stabilization on the lenses AMAZING 2. The increase in MP from 30 to 45...shooting sports and doing significant cropping makes a difference 3) higher FPS from 7 to 12(mechanical) , 20(electric) 4) No more calibrating lenses since no mirror 5) The new Rf lenses are amazing and if u were to get the Nikon z7 with the new z lenses you will see the difference 6) People and animal AF especially with eye AF...AMAZING do alot of portrait/model and wildlife.. 7) adaptor to use my EF lenses on the R5 so not losing anything...I've bought a few RF lenses but kept a few EF...something you will be doing if you change 8) Better dynamic range ( 5D Mk iv to canon r5) 9) Much easier to use manual focus lenses with mirrorless bodies...10) Tilt screen is amazing

Hi Attilio I went through exactly the same metal (and financial) exercise as you earlier this year and finally made the change to a Z7. I have never looked back, I optimised my lens choice by buying two new Z lenses and kept 3 of my F. The weight (for me also it was one of the main reasons) does make a big difference but the joy of using the Z and the many other advantages confirmed my decision and I have never regretted the change. I get the best from the same size sensor (I had a D850) with the new Z lenses and the advantages of the IS with the F lenses, which I dont use as often - I am a Landscape photographer ! Believe me, there are so many advantages you will not be disappointed.

You perfectly described the quandary we all go through when we switch systems. 3 years ago I ditched my Nikon D800 gear for the APSC Fuji system (X-T2 and X-T3) and absolutely love it BUT as you stated each of us has different needs and preferences. You casually mentioned "Medium Format" and, if you are serious, I would strongly suggest you look at the Fuji GFX 100S. That is definitely a WOW! I would do it at a drop of a pin excepting I am not in your caliber of photography nor, as my wife hastens to tell me, am I in the right tax bracket. Good luck with your struggle.

Maybe rent for a weekend one of each. first the Nikon Z7II And then the medium format camera. This way you get real time in the field hands on review and use to help or maybe confuse your thoughts more. lol. All kidding aside. I do know that in Seattle, you can rent on Friday after two pm and then return by Monday at 10 am, and this will be a one day only charge. really good way to try something. Either way in good thoughts knowing that you will make the best choice for you. Best of luck in your search.

Medium format is amazing. I went to Fuji 50 and the difference is REAL. In my testing and research, the only downsides are speed and weight. Speed is not really relevant for landscapes, totally irrelevant for long exposure :-) Weight needs to be considered. Even with the pretty small 50r or 100s bodies, the glass is pretty big.

Ciao Attilio... bravo! Fantastic pictures, landscape magician... it is a great pleasure exploring your adventures. At this point of the quality you have reached, I think that you should develop that "Medium format bug"... and explore it thoroughly. I am sure it will certainly give you more of that 3D I personally are sensible about in photography. Mirrorless and technology is giving technical perfection to the images, but art is more imperfect and is more "deep" than what I feel in many pictures I see around. I left after 4 years Fuji X series, and discovered just accidentally Pentax K-1 Mk II... and pleasure came back again. But it's very personal, not being professional, but for pure pleasure. Non so se mi spiego...

Attilio, I was there with you in early 2021 to a certain degree. However, I hadn't picked up my D7500 in a few years as sadly I got away from the hobby I enjoyed, and was determined to get back into it. I was going to upgrade to full frame as I had a few lenses already (not as many as you of course), but as I started to do some research and figured my learning curve even with a new full frame DSLR would be high, I decided to make the leap to mirrorless and got the Z6ii. Got a good price on my camera and the few lenses and dove straight in. So far so good and I'm enjoying the weight difference with the body and new Z lenses, and I find the usability very easy to get reacquainted with photography again. I'm able to spend more time on the subject and less about learning the equipment. Your work is amazing so good luck with your final decision as there are no bad choices.

First, I would wait to see what the new Z9 looks like. A medium format camera, presumably a Fuji GFX of some flavour, will also involve a large investment in new glass as well as the camera body. The race for the most mp's surely has to end somewhere. and as for prints the resolution on your D810 already exceeds the capabilities of most printers, as you must already know. I would wait a little while longer before scratching that itch.

Great conversation. My only thought is if you are considering the Fuji GFX line as your medium format solution, I think the widest lens in the GF line is a 23mm lens which is equivalent to an 18mm in full frame. That is pretty wide, but the 35mm format cameras, at least in the Nikon line are as wide as 14mm. Just a thought.

I've been shooting on my Nikon D-7100 for about a year and a half and feel like I could benefit from a higher resolution camera with higher dynamic range in the Z7. Other things that also stand out with the Z7 would be being able to see a live view of the exposure, a live histogram, focus peaking and better high ISO performance shooting night photography as well, just to name a few. So for me the benefits are worth the investment. In general, if the pros out weigh the cons, then it is likely a good choice to make. I hope that whatever decision you make, that you are happy in the end and keep snapping some great photos. Thanks, Attilio, for all you do.

I have a d810 and After a week on vacations I was exhausted in carrying a heavy bag including my 70-200 2.8 tamron. Beautiful lens btw. So I jumped over to Fuji XT four and I absolutely love it. It’s fun and so fast. I could never get the same action shots with my Nikon. I realize how the d810 really doesn’t fit my hand now. If I went to Nikon wireless I would wait until the Z7 goes down in price. BUT Full frame lenses are so much more expensive. I find the Fuji lenses very sharp, the color is awesome. I think if you went to the Nikon you would probably end up buying the mirror less lenses as well. I still have my Nikon - can’t quite let go and it’s a financial loss. Two different experiences with Nikon and Fuji.

I switched from a Nikon D600 to a Nikon Z6 with a 24-70 zoom lens for mirrorless.. The smaller weight and size was much appreciated being a female with smaller hands and arms. I did get the lens adaptor as I kept several of my old Nikon lenses. But I will eventually phase them out as the mirrorless lenses are awesome so far and smaller and lighter too. I am not sorry for a minute for going to the mirrorless. However one disadvantage, and the only one I can think of, is that the sensor needs cleaning much more often on the mirrorless. When you change lenses, it is totally exposed and very close to the front of the camera, unlike the DSLR's. I didn't find it too hard to get to know the new camera as they were very similar as far as menu and where many of the controls were.

Count me in! When I came back into photograph. I went with Sony because I could adapt my Canon FD lens. I started with Sony A6000 crop sensor. Now I use a Sony A7M2 mirrorless camera. The A7M2 is full frame 24 mega pixels! Thought about going to new camera with 42mega pixels. But why I don't sell my work. I just take pictures as a hobby! So I am not going to get a newer camera! Now I am back to buying M-42 Pentax prime lens and adapting them on to the A7M2. Smaller for traveling on the trail. No motor in the lens like the modern Sony lens! The camera sits on the tripod most of the time don't need all the touch screen stuff. Also, started photo stacking for getting the picture sharp through the scene. I did buy a used Sony E-mount 35mm prime. The price was right! With that all said. The camera and lens are just tools! The best upgrade is behind the camera. Learning how to use the tools that you have. One tool I left out is the computer editing programs. This is where I need to get more experience on with Photoshop and Lightroom.

Hi Attilio, considering how happy you have been with your camera and the shutter actuations are relatively very low, I would give it maybe twelve months before you change to a new one. This will also give you plenty of time to gather more info and try out a few cameras in a shop to see how they handle. Yes it's nice to have more pixels but you've managed with what you have so far and very well! My camera has 42MP (Sony) and 40x60 prints would be no problem without using something like Gigapixel Ai. Good luck with your decision!!

This has been my exact problem Attilio, I am on the Nikon D810 and for a year have been 'thinking' of a D850 but every time my finger gets near the 'buy' button the same thoughts, pretty much, invade my mind. It is obvious now Fuji have a lower cost 105Mp medium format in the GXF 100s that we will see Nikon and others increase sensor capacity for the new range. The Z7 and Z7ii are going to look old pretty quick but at least investors in that system who buy Z lenses will have an upgrade path. We on the F mount models will be stuck as Nikon not only fail to launch any further DSLR models (that looks pretty certain) but the availability of the present models fades. It is well nigh impossible to find a new D810 at a fair market price now, those left on sale are grossly inflated. Same will happen to the D850 when the product life cycle ends - and we'll be left with glass which can only be used with a z adaptor on the new models. You've definitely done the right thing. The basic truth is that if the D810 can't provide an image big enough, the D850 is marginal compared to the Fuji. To make it more complicated again, Adobe just brought Camera Raw 13.2 out with a RAW enhancer which actually turns my D810 images into the same size as that Fuji, yep, a whopping 105 Mp and the quality is good, smooth and sharp, not slightly pixelated as you may expect (at 100%) so between everything, my D850 is also remaining in the shop, and won't be joining me unless the price plumets. I really don't see the point, just like you explained in this great video. Thanks for the reasurrance, I now know I too am doing the right thing. Good luck Attilio, and keep these great videos coming.

Well, lots of reasons not to switch, other than it's fun to have a new camera. For your type of photography, you'll always have a good reason never to switch. You're manually focusing anyway so the new focus tracking tech and eye AF is useless to you, and you're mostly doing super long exposures so you don't get a realistic preview as you do with most shutter speeds with mirrorless cameras. You'll definitely get used to the button layout with the z7 and will like it just as much as the d810 once you're used to it though. The image quality will be slightly better but no one will ever notice. (roughly same DR, slightly better resolution...) Keep in mind the nikon Z lenses are big. The 20mm f1.8 which I know you use often weighs in more than the AFS version. Yes the new 14-24 is lighter, and the 24-70 is slightly lighter, but it's not a huge difference- the sensor size is still the same, and the aperture is still as fast. Going to the "affordable" fuji medium format will give you way better res and DR, but at the cost of very big lenses, and, after post processing, is anyone really going to notice? Probably not... :)

Attilio I have been using Nikon for many years including the 800 and 750 model. A year ago I bought the Nikon Z6. And a month ago I purchased the Fuji GFX 100s. Nikon's quality is exceptional, but the medium format is superior. It is another galaxy. But the cost is much higher on the camera and the lenses although they are priced equivalent to Nikon's premium f/2.8 range are much larger so they are not always suitable for travel where you have to do a lot of walking while controlling size and weight. Another problem is if you photograph in insecure environments. It is not the same to carry a $9,000 equipment than another very good one (Nikon Z7 with a couple of lenses) for $4,000. But in any case I recommend you to use mirrorless cameras. Finally your videos are excellent and very informative. I look forward to your new series on long exposure photography. I am sure I will learn a lot.

I think you’ll be surprise of the use of the miroless. I got the Z6ii and immediately felt comfortable with it. The image quality is excellent. The weight is definitely a plus factor.

I watched your previous video about the D850 and your reasons for sticking with the D810. Justifiable at the time of course. This video highlights a dilemma I have faced over the past 3 months. I was shooting the D810 also, and it is a top knotch camera to be sure. However, a few things, with the pandemic thrown in for good measure, persuaded me to think harder. Firstly, I have glass in only F Mount, so the switch to mirrorless would simply be far too expensive and would not achieve better images. Secondly, it seemed around September last year that Nikon were poised to replace the D850 with a 60Mp and better featured DSLR. Rumors that a prototype was being tested abounded. Release of it (D880?) was said to be early to mid 2021. It seems, with the falling sales of cameras, further DSLR development by Nikon has been dropped. This means the D850 is the end of the line. If you have F mount glass, and want the 'best of the best' DSLR then the D850 is the only upgrade route to anyone not contemplating buying a body and 3 or 4 Z lenses in the next year or two. Thirdly, I have seen several reviews where the Z cameras (so far) are deemed a bit lightweight and comparitively vulnerable to damage and bad weather. I posted previously about this, and decided to re-post because I finally made my decision. The D850 arrived this week and as the 'angry photographer' says, this is a legendary camera. Given I have four really good F mount lenses, this was the only way to go. I didn't want to take the risk of Nikin discontinuing the D850 before I got my hands on a new one. I never buy used, I had one or two experiences in the past, and by acting now, I have 'the poor mans' medium format camera, with my F lenses, and at my age, this will almost certainly see me out - unless it gets stolen or dropped of course. I didn't think the D810 images could be improved, but this higher resolution gives you the power to crop in a little and still have the same resolution that I had on the D810. If the whole image is used on the D850 - wow! This, plus the focus stack feature and the tilting lcd screen were deciding factors. The other factor was cost. At the release of the D850 nearly 3 years ago, in the UK, it was 3500 pounds. It was cheaper in the USA, 3300 dollars I think. At the moment, with careful shopping, I got mine for just 1899 pounds, still a lot of money, but 1600 pounds less than the release price here. Main dealers here are still charging 2500 pounds, incidentally. So, with the much lower price, the ability to keeo my lenses, the vastly improved image quality, the tilting lcd panel and the focus stacking mode, I had no decision to make. I had to go for it before it got discontinued. for all of these reasons, the DSLR remains the choice for me. I would never go for mirrorless, the prices are crazy for what you get. Anything sharper than the D850 would require prints made bigger than two metres wide or more - the D850 with good glass really is that good. Hope this helps a few people from making an expensive mistake by dumping their DSLRs. Every word here is well intentioned and meant to help you make your own decision. Sadly my D810 is now for sale. I loved it, but I have done, for me, the right thing.

Everyone needs a bit of 'Retail Therapy' every now and then. and the advantage is, you get to keep 'state of the art' whilst scratching that itch. on top of that there is the WYSIWYG factor to consider with mirrorless!

Get the Nikon Z7ii with the FTZ? Then you can use your current beloved F mount lenses, have the D810 for stills photography use and most importantly, get improved video with the Z7ii which can also be a backup body.

Love your work Attilio. I'm just as all over the place as you are. ISO performance and pixel count are the two most important factors for me. Mirrorless cameras are lighter but the lenses can be huge as they more or less incorporate an adapter within them. I shoot Nikon full frame as well as Olympus OMD-EM5II. The High-RES 64mp RAW files from the Oly are insane, even with a $150 kit lens. Imagine using a prime lens with that much resolution on a full frame lol. Also, I absolutely love focus peaking. It's such an incredible way to secure focus. As I said, I too am all over the place and then there's the money factor as well, and the lenses required for new rigs. GAS!!

I bought a d810 and a NIKKOR 20mm 1.8g lens after seeing your videos years ago. I too am torn but like you have said nobody will be able to tell the difference... Plus its kinda cool to think when I'm out shooting I use the same gear as my favourite photographer. Keep it 👍 for landscapes its as good now as it was 6 years ago

Hi Attilio, you asked for advice and here it goes. I used to shoot with a Nikon D7500 and a year ago I switched for a Nikon Z6. I already had a 20mm AF-S lens. After watching one of your videos I found it really worthy a check and I adopted it and it’s brilliant. I choose the Z6 because it was cheaper than the Z7, I didn’t need 45M and I intended to do a bit of videos (all tests I read at that moment recommended the Z6 rather than the Z7 for video). One year after, there’s the Z6 ii and I can tell you that : 1) I use the 20mm AF-S with the FTZ adapter and, OK, it works fine, but never enters or gets out smoothly ; 2) if you want to shoot videos with you new camera, think twice about the Z6 or the Z7. And think again because the subject tracking and the AF area mode are a pain in the neck for moving subjects. I shoot sometimes rock climbing, a quite slow sport and it is hard, very hard. Sony’s cameras are far superior in tracking movements. On 26 April, Nikon released a firmware update to improve subject tracking for Z6 ii and Z7 ii, nevertheless not for the first generation. I inquired and it seems that the CPU in the first generation cameras is not powerful enough. Such a disappointment. All right, you are specialized in landscape photography. But if you switch to a Z7, maybe photos of family, friends, children, pets and etc may eventually disappoint you. To be sincere, if I were you, I would wait a little bit. For the moment, Nikon doesn’t allow third parties to play fully on lens for Z series. Sigma, for example, has issued the DG DN for mirrorless… not-Nikon. Good luck and please keep publishing ; your videos are inspiring.

Ciao Attilio, I'm a landscape photographer as well and I've been using a canon 5d mkIV. Of course the r6 and r5 look amazing on paper and possibly using them as well, but if I really think it through, for landscape photography my camera is more than enough. Lots of well known photographers have used one and sold hundreds (if not thounsands) of prints. Of course I share with you that a new camera brings you some new "energy" but that will eventually run off, and since you still enjoy using your nikon d810 (which btw is a wonderfull piece of equipment) just stick with it, and maybe by the next time you have one of those urges, get yourself a medium format camera, that's definately the way to evolve your photography.

Great topic Attilio. No, the change won't improve your photography. As you said, the main reason to upgrade is to reduce size/weight and expand the dynamic range. And it seems you won't get that with the change. In my case, I shoot landscape and also a lot of skiing and the lag of the EVF makes the last impossible with mirrorless cameras. When shooting landscape I'm normally in the mountains or in the desert and involves hiking and often camping. Few years ago I bought a used full frame with a couple F mount lenses. Soon I realized that I needed a faster computer, more hard drives, bigger filters and a bigger backpack. Hiking and skiing with the camera equipment became a real pain in the neck and I started to avoid it. I finally sold the full frame and lenses and stick with my beloved APS-C 24 MP cameras and my many DX lenses. Do I need millions of MP to print several meters wide? I'm gonna check with a magnifying lens the resolution of a square millimeter? Do I need countless Ks and 100s FPS video? Eye AF and 5 axis in camera stabilization + lens stabilization, etc.? Not at all! I just need a reliable camera and lenses that I enjoy carrying around while going for adventures.

This video is so relevant to most of us. We have all been through and will go through the agony and,,,, ectasy,,,, of selecting new equipment. I am doing it now! It becomes almost a consuming, but interesting sideline to photography. Is there the absolute perfect camera or lens for anyone? For some yes for others maybe not. I am now keen to find a suitable (ideal) full frame camera to augment my APC Nikon. I have some FX lenses. I really want the ergonomics of D700 but not the weight, this is my conundrum. A D750 has better resolution and less weight. But! I believe my best images are about the aesthetic impact of the shot and not ultimate resolution. I think, fir me, your photographic strength is your great imagination and art and I personally won't enjoy your images any more if you had ultimate technical capability. But if it means your back will benefit and enthusiasm peaks,,,go for it!

I’m definitely looking forward to the course Attilio, too much work, courses and not enough photography. So this will set the balance right. As to changing your camera. I have D810 also and I love it! I get to use some amazing vintage Nikon lenses with it. If you are torn, then maybe now is not the right time..... I have an XT-2 mirrorless which I use also, but I still come back to the 810.

Hello Attilio ! For me one of the reason to not switch to a mirorless camera is the fact that we are loosing our TTL view in the viewfinder. I love to see exactly what the sensor is going to capture and I DO NOT like to see an electronic reproduction of the image as the mirrorless are giving. Second major point to me is that I don't like smaller and lighter body. Wieght and size are great help to stabilize when hand held shooting. So....I keep working with my Nikon D800, D500 and even D300.

Interesting video. I just bought the Z7Ii and the deciding factor was lenses. Moving to the Z’s is necessary to take advantage of future Nikon lens development. I bought the 24-70 2.8 S lens with the camera. While waiting for my exchequer to refill and Nikon to release new lenses, eg the105 macro S, I can still use my existing stable of F lenses.

Great topic! I'm taking my family on a pacific northwest vacation this summer - Mt Rainier, Olympic and Glacier. I started thinking again about whether it was time to switch to mirrorless, whether to switch to Sony, etc... Going through everything - what I could get for my current equipment, cost of the new, etc... I just couldn't justify making a change at this point. I use a Nikon D810 as well. The only changes I'm making this year is switching from the Tamron 15-30 2.8 (1st gen) to the Nikon 20mm 1.8 and switching from the big square filter setup I only used with the Tamron to a magnetic filter system I'll use on 3 of my lens. That 20mm is so sharp! For me it's just not time to switch camera bodies... Did order that histogram tshirt though :)

Hello Attila, very good pros and cons list. You have articulated nicely the justifications that those of with G.A.S. Go through every day. That little voice that is whispering sweet thoughts about medium format should be getting louder. Making a switch to basically the same camera you have now without a mirror will be anticlimactic in the end. You have great lens lineup for your 810 and it has become a part of you. Don’t discard what is working so well for you because you are itchy. Love your work and your ability to keep it interesting.

I watch every video you produce, and you have yet to disappoint! I learn something new with pretty much every new video, and I eagerly await your new course! Did my first long exposure lakeside photo yesterday, learned a lot from applying your teachings (most importantly that I’m not quite there with finding decent compositions yet, LOL. In my defence, I was a bit rushed, but it was great to see smoothed water in my own camera! 🤗). Can’t wait for the next upload! Cheers!

Attilio, it is very simple to make the choice, for landscape photography if there is money, I would soon buy the Fuji GFX100s and a good wide-angle lens, otherwise I would let myself stay with the D810. I saw the video you made a few years ago about buying or not buying the D850, in my case I left the D810 as the 2nd body and bought the D850, which is a much more reactive camera, it focuses almost in the dark and as I do almost all type of photography, it helps, of course, if I only photographed landscape I still had the D810, unless I had the money to buy the fuji, as you can see, it's easy to do
