This is a great video. Not only that it's very well put together but is also very relatable. I always struggle finding something interesting to photograph in the forest; and grand compositions... even harder. Fantastic video, Andrew. Reminds me the first time we saw the forest a dozen or so years. The lady in the visitor centre in Margaret River told us to go down the road just saying it was pretty. Driving out of Margaret River we couldn't see the point at first but then round a bend - WOW. My 3Mp Olympus couldn't do it justice. Went through it again 18 months ago in the middle of the day - beautiful to look at but rubbish photos. Hope the packing's coming along!

Love the way you opened this video, kind of like the last one. I have to say that the coast and the forest really remind me of some areas in California. It's a lot like the Eucalyptus groves in Cali, the brush around the Central Coast and the rocky coastline. Lovely images of the the open forest. I love the way the peeling bark becomes mulch on the forest floor. My personal favorite was the third image with the strong presence of the ferns. I don't know if you ever get fog there but I would love to see the higher angle images (1 & 2) with a bit of mist pooling around those lush ferns. I think you guys are starting to rub off on me. I am considering doing some videos myself. I may contact you with some questions. Cheers.

Hi Andrew... I am working my way in reverse viewing your vlogs. I have already picked up on any number of useful tips from your videos. The panoramic's are stunning and at the same time the landscape & those barkless trees look so alien to me coming from the other side of the world in New England, USA, more specific, the highlands of central Vermont... I did a reply to Simon Lynch below concerning the use of or lack thereof of a pano head, quite obviously not necessarily a requirement ( not to mention a weight saver ), based on the beautiful panoramic's you shot! Keep up the good work! Bill @ WGF Studio53

Great video! as always.. There is always something to learn from it.. One question, I have been following your videos for a while now, I know you are always in favor of EV -0.3, how come it was opposite this time, you were +0.3 EV... I would really appreciate if you could share your thought process.
@Andrew_marr7 жыл бұрын
Thank you Pallav, your right I do tend to under expose my shots, as it's much easier to bring out detail in an under exposed digital shot (an overexposure image can't be saved). In this case the forest was quite dark because of the trees and the early light. The exposure indicator was letting me know that I have some sky over exposed, my this didn't worry me as I knew I was going to crop this out once I had stitched the image together. Hope that helps! :)

Top notch work once again Andrew, loved the drone shots of you and Lachy. Any chance he will be flying it soon ? ;)
@Andrew_marr7 жыл бұрын
Haha, the drone footage as it backs away is a nice way to reveal a scene. Lachy has flown the drone before, intact most of the drones shots in the two Esperance videos I shared earlier this year was his work, including the shot of the car driving away at the end. We had some issue with controlling the drone in the forest, I think the signal was effected by the trees, the results was the drone drifted considerably. Good on you for looking out for him though...he likes your comment!
@galesmith85547 жыл бұрын
Andrew, one of your best with an excellent discussion and great examples of how to take panoramas in a forest. However, you did not make any adjustment for the nodal point of your 24-70mm zoom which I know is far forward from the camera base about a third back from the front of the lens. I am sure Objects relatively close like the trees there was considerable parallax that LR can fix but not always without artifacts. I have been using what RRS calls a Nodal slide to get non-parallax images, however your forest panoramas look excellent so maybe this is no longer an issues when stitching?
@Andrew_marr7 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Gale, glad you enjoyed this one. I know this can sometime be an issue, but I've not worried too much about it. I don't many pano images and when I do I tend not to have much in the immediate foreground. I think you're also right in saying that Lightroom does an excellent job in stitching the image together. Thanks for your comment Gale!

Hello Andrew, just loved your images - fabulous. I suspect you warmed - up the image, giving the images those lovely warm tones. I was so glad when you photographed the ' S ' curve as I saw that scene at the start of your vlog. I have a question for you Andrew??? I have never done a multiple panoramic before and I observed that your focusing point was bang - on in the middle of the scene. My question is: Does the normal rule of focusing one third up from the bottom of the screen (not) come into play when doing a panoramic ??? Once again thank you for sharing ...
@pjculbertson557 жыл бұрын
Gorgeous trees. I always wonder on panos if the nearer objects will be out of focus since you keep the focus the same from scene to scene. I assume on the trees pano, you focused 1/3 into the scene and using F10, all objects had nearly uniform sharpness? Do you try to compensate somehow for scenes having both near, middle and far objects or just let it be what it is?
@Andrew_marr7 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much! I set the shot up so the main tree in the shot was about a third in one the left and around a third into the scene. With the camera aimed on that tree, I focused the camera and then din't touch it again. I then set the camera for the first shot and start firing off the shots. You're right with a f-stop of 10 most the scene will be in focus (I suppose that is what I do to compensate the various distances the trees are away from the camera). If I was to have a smaller DoF, I'd just let be. I actually don't mind a little out of focus objects in the distance, if gives a more natural feel to the scene and also lets the main object in focus really pop out in the image.
@nicolasbertin85526 жыл бұрын
First two images with the first crop for both are great. Nice repetition, the eye doesn't linger anywhere, it's balanced. I miss Australia, lived there for 3 years. The S road is less successful, as it's too bright and you can't really see the trees. A nice 4WD track or walking track would have worked better. I also suspect the polariser may have killed the perspective in the forest, despite the S road. The bush on the left foreground for example seems to be flat with the rest of the trees, instead of being in front and the rest of the trees in the back. You stopped there because of the S, but did the forest really seem that striking to you at that position ? It's a lot busy.

I will write your KZbin channel as a source :) Thanks for the quick response! PS: I live in Denmark, so I hope my English is up to par!

Awesome results....I did notice that you didn't use a panoramic head, your results suggest to me that maybe panoramic heads aren't essential.
@Andrew_marr7 жыл бұрын
Thank you Simon, I tend not to take lots of panoramic images, and when I do I like the results I get with out one. So my philosophy is, if I don't need it, why complicate things with extra equipment. I'm sure there are uses for this sort of things, but I haven't found the need yet!

Simon Lynch... From personal exp., the pano head is only as good as the tripod base it sits on, i.e., I use a 229 Super Pro Manfrotto on a Benro with a small center post base. The end result being, by the 3rd frame I am 1/2 bubble off, 4th frame a full bubble off. In a word, useless... When in PS, after stitching, lots of cropping required, which basically leaves one with a narrow panoramic... :

The images were great Andrew. I could not believe the shot of the road would come out so nice. I’m always fascinated by how photographers “find the composition.” Do you have a pre-defined protocol you look for or wait until something catches your attention and then work it from there?

Lovely video Andrew and photographs are beautiful as well. Your videography is in par with your photography brilliant stuff. Just a quick question did you get any parallax error at the foreground while stitching the images. I know you levelled the tripod but still just want to know. Many thanks. Cheers !!

Thank you Cherag for your kind comments, while the videography is new to me, I'm enjoying the creative challenge. It's great to get your support feedback, I really appreciate it. Regarding the parallax error, there wasn't any I noticed, this could be because of the natural of the shot (it might have been more evident if I was shooting something with more structure like a building). Plus the Lightroom does a brilliant job stitching the images together. Thanks again! :)

Nice work mate. Really enjoying your videos. Was the road bend shot bracketed and blended in photoshop or just lightroom?

nice vlog. are these indiginous forests or man made? your video made me feel that it was shot in Cape Town. lovely shots Andrew. keep then coming.
@Andrew_marr7 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, the Boranup Forest is a natural forest unlike the Pine Forest I feaured in a video a few weeks ago. From what I can tell from your videos, there are lots of similarities between the Western Australian landscape and that of Cape Town. People we know from South Africa have also commented on the similarities!
@mujahidurrehman7 жыл бұрын
Yes, there are a lot of similarities in the coast line. The only indigenous sections of forests in Cape Town area are the ones where the water comes down from the forest, the pine forest and the karri trees are planted by men. Some of the man made forests have been cut down because the pine doesn't let the local flora and fauna grow. Cape Town and surrounding areas are more about the flora and fauna that is found nowhere in the world. Thanks for the reply, your forest is beautiful, one day, I would like to shoot there.

you need a guide to that area. I'm going to have a minor operation to my good eye Thursday, when I can see again I want to go back.
