This presentation has helped me realise that I'm on a 'good' track when it comes to expressing myself with photography. I've gradually become less obsessed over taking pics while trying to appreciate a location. Exploring has kind of been a constant driver - and it's so reassuring to hear you talk about this here. Will start taking notes the way you suggest. Thank you so much for your insights on the personal development side of this pursuit.

This isn't the most exciting, entertaining or fun to watch channel but it is the most important channel to watch to learn and improve your photography. Condensed with information and no worthless gear talk, this channel is a true Art class.

I agree, Ryan. KZbin approaches photography and other skills generally as a quick fix. “Just do this and you’ll take amazing photographs.” Alister is not pretending to achieve this. It’s the exploring, the journey, the thinking about our photography and asking questions.

@@hnahler Thanks guys. Anyone offering quick fixes is ultimately doing the student a disservice. Creativity takes time, I was 50 years old and shooting for over 15 years before I made the real connections with myself and began to be truly expressive and creative.

“I don’t want you to be Alister Benn clones…”. I love this!! I think what I appreciate most about your approach to photography is exactly this. You can appreciate each individual’s point of view when looking at what they made - as long as someone is true to them self and not trying to copy another person’s approach. In my opinion 20 people can photograph the exact same scene and all have completely different photographs in the end and each one can be stunning in its own way.

I found that what you teach is so valuable! You are a great teacher!! Bought your book “the colour of meaning” just last week. It will take some time for me to read it because I’m burned out and reading affects my tired brain to much. It’s also not in my language (I’m Swedish) so that also takes a lot of effort, but so far I’ve enjoyed the book very much! Love the pictures in this video! Thank you for using your time to teach about photography, these lessons are so helpful!

Very very nice images Allister. As always you make me think. I can see something in most of my images but I wonder if others see what I do. Alway shoot for yourself is what I've done for years. Maybe I'm ahead of the game like most of the great artists were lol. When I'm dead and buried someone might find my work and say this guy's was onto something lol.

Great video. After watching the video I started thinking about how does emotionally state at the time influence your compositions on the day and creativity as a whole. Personally I think your emotionally state plays a big part on how you want to portray any subject matter, be it landscapes or any other subject matter.

100% if you’re open to that. I think a lot of frustration in the field is caused by not listening to our gut

Such a helpful and insightful look at the process. I loved last week's note-taking approach, and this is an excellent follow-on, and not JUST because it validates my theory that compositions are "felt" and then you can go back and explain why you think it works based on the established rules.

Really enjoyed that video Alister even though I'm familiar by now with your "5 triggers". Seeing how you have applied those triggers is very helpful. I notice that your images tend to generally have subdued contrast - certainly compared to my own style. Is this done consciously by you in post or do you tend to subconsciously seek low contrast compositions. I'm curious.

Great seascape photos and video. But could you please bump up the recording volume. If you are watching on a small speaker device it is a bit low. Your 'Highland Toffee' voice doesn't come over well or you could fill your studio with helium 🙂
