Nice video Gary. I agree your favourite shot is the best of the day. I think you did right to remove the digger and the light streaking through the clouds was brilliantly dramatic. Having said that I quite liked the image with all the vans and things in it. Told a story of that particular day. Another warm and engaging video. Brilliant.

Two of my favourite togs having a chat. All we need is for Mr Heaton to join and we'll have a full house. Cheers for all the content guys, you are both a great inspiration. Gary, shame you weren't at Seaham when the tide is higher as two min down from that pier is an old wheel on the shore. Google the wheel Seaham.

John Haswell Photography - hi John, Mr Heaton will never stoop to our level :) Adam (1st man photography) is great, feet well and truly planted. If we get Paul G Johnson too it'll be a full house. . WOW now I am excited. I've just Googled the wheel. Is it an old train set of wheels? Where is it please John? I'll be going back definitely

Gary Gough you're all great. I've seen some of Paul's vids so I'll definitely subscribe. The wheel is about 2 minutes walk from the pier. You park at nose's point car park and walk towards that pier. Before you get there though you take a cut down to the beach and it's right there. The next beach is blast beach which featured in the start of one of the alien movies. It's also where I took my first landscape pic ... Here it is flic.kr/p/SoH4PK

Gary, The images "scream QUALITY." Not only did you adapt, but the phrase "adapt and overcome," comes to mind, You did very well, and it was, indeed, worth it. I think the mid-day shot was the strongest. Molto chiaroscuro (but with a muted palette!). Thank-You, Mike

Answer to Q1 - yes, and to Q2 - yes - Alwasy do the best you can with what you have, and it's always worth getting out. You have to be in it to win it as they say. Just spent a lovely 16 mins on Sunday morning watching another great video, thanks Gary. Agree about your favourite shot, although the portrait one with the very dark sky at the top (6:22) is a close 2nd for me.

Yes you did do well and yes I agree that getting out makes it worthwhile the vast majority of the time regardless of the images. It's a bit like fishing, one of my other hobbies but pretty much replaced with photography. When you go out you never know if you are going to catch anything but frequently you are in nice locations, enjoying all sorts of weather and often on your own with no pressures from you day to day life. It becomes your sole thought and can be very good for your well being making it nearly always worth it. There are a couple of fishing sayings that could apply to photography. A bad days fishing (photography) is still better than a good day at work. The other is - it is called fishing not catching for a reason much in the same way that photography is drawing the light that is there but not necessarily catching great light. Another top video and very useful for me as I plan to visit Roker Pier on my way down to some Union business in Leeds next month. Seaham or Staithes were my other targets.
@GaryGough

Hi Simon, Glad you liked the video and a huge thanks for the site and AP recommendations. I don't really bother checking the cloud reports and stuff, I only check the basic weather. More often than not as long as the weather doesn't seem horrendous I just go and see what I get. There's always a shot to be had. I also love the challenge you're very often faced with. Makes you a stronger photographer. I can certainly imagine how useful those websites/aps can be though, especially for star shots where you really want a clear sky etc. Cheers 👍🏻

Hi Gary. Nice to see you in my original neck of the woods 😃. Some great shots as always. Picked a good time for the pier with all the work going on! They're opening up the emergency tunnel built into the pier so it'll be open to the public. PS Just wondered if you managed to get and shots of Penshaw Monument while you were up that way. Also did you know about the new bridge that's being built over the river and due to open early next year?

Hi Gary great video filmed on my local patch, Olive about 20min from broker and work in Sunderland. I got shots from a similar spot last week when the tall ships were leaving the river Wear. It was packed with people but got some ok shots. I made some stupid mistakes like shooting in basic jpegs and at high iso, I didn't really pay attention to settings as is was a family day out as was rushing shots just to record the event rather than looking for compositions. I will be using this video for getting some sunrise shots later in the year. As for seaham pier I understand access is only permitted to members of the angling club who have key cards or so a colleague tells me. Subbed your channel ATB Steve.

So! There are 3 sources I use, yr.no, a Scandinavian weather service with very accurate info, skippysky.com.au (Thanks to Mr Heaton for that site!), an Ozzy site with easy to use cloud radar charts and an app on my phone called MetroEarth, which allows you to drop a pin in a location and get a cloud cover read out for across the day. You could easily get away with using just yr.no for general photography but I use a combination of the 3 because alot of the dark skies I enjoy are 2hrs+ away and there isn't much photography you can be doing in the dead of night when it's cloudy ;) I've been mostly doing my astro stuff over in Anglesey but I know Yorkshire has some cracking dark skies so any locationrecommendations you've got got Gary am all ears :) ( to get the most out of yr, search for you location, hit 'hour by hour' then hit 'detailed'. The site will give you an hourly breakdown of cloud cover, rain, wind etc)

Hi Gary, not sure why but I always attract the thumb-downers luckily i'm thick skinned :) Only 1 so far, it must be because I uploaded it after their bed time. I was watching Casey Neistats video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/an-WZ2h7idV-e8k) about a "Make-a-Wish" guy who is terminally ill and wanted to spend time with him. It was quite a moving video and it has nearly 800 thumbs down. OK so it has 91k thumbs-up but still. It's so sad. Thanks for taking time out to watch my video. It means a lot. Here have one back 👍🏻
@mickhursey3887

I really don't understand why people get so concerned because someone puts a thumb down? It really doesn't mean that you're public enemy number one, it's just someone expressing an opinion. If I got bitter & twisted every time someone had a different opinion than me, I'd have hung myself by now! The example Gary quotes of the video of a a terminally ill person, maybe the people that put a thumbs down were just too upset by the video, an acceptable reason for not liking it I would have thought? Anyway, whinge over. I loved this video Gary and definitely worth the trip.

Just one question, why the Christmas music? ;)
@GaryGough
@GaryGough 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Karl - lol When I uploaded the video having worked on it for an afternoon, I thought to myself, the music sounded a little Christmassy. I wondered if anyone else would notice :) I just liked the music because it sounded happy and dramatic, didn't think it sound like Christmas music at all originally. 😆😆😆

Top video buddy. You will have to show me how to remove big things from my image as I might be doing a collaboration soon with someone that I might need to crop out ;)

Frustrating isn't it ! Visited that pier earlier this year & found the same problem. Think if you become friends with a fisherman you might be able to get access to the pier....maybe

Oh hi Lynne... I tried speaking to the fishermen but they were real jobsworths. P.S. I have you earmarked for a shout-out. Is that ok? I'll do it next week 👍🏻

They said I couldn't go forward of the gates because of Health and Safety pffff They pointed out there were no hand rails. OMG - I switched off. No worries at all Lynne. You keep up the great work too xx
