I love our Landseer. She learns quickly but as mentioned, a calm quiet tone is best. I never, ever scold her. Also, if she isn't getting the command, I'll change to a command she does know and reward her. This way she's always succeeding. These dogs move slowly, but omg she's a master at manipulation. Pure joy.

We love these gentle giants. They are an integral part of our B&B. We call them our welcome dogs and they are almost always fully accepted and loved by our guests.

I have an 18 month old Landseer Newf. Ichinojo weighs 175 lbs, he gets lazy when the weather gets too hot, he drools enough to fill a bathtub and sheds all over my floors, but he's got a sweet disposition, he's a good watchdog and he's a loyal companion.

The con is the short lifespan...they are wonderful....they shine brightly and bigly and burn out fast. I miss mine. Her name was Abby..she was full of love and I miss her all the time. She was only 6 when she died unexpectedly on Christmas Day, and that heartbreak makes me reluctant to replace her. They are magical.

Were they mixed with Great Pyrenees? It would explain the white, protective, and gentle.

You do realize that Newfies were most likely made by the mix of Portuguese water dog and Great Pyrenees back in the 1600s. I wonder what dog they used to make them white because online it just says Live Stock Guardian dogs which there are so many like the Maremma, kuvacz, etc
