@@coreyhunting1590 grooming, vet, food, grooming, supplies, beds, grooming, medication for older age, did I mention grooming? My grandparents had a Newfie and he was the best dog ever, but had to be groomed every 2 weeks, and it would sometimes take double to triple the time of a regular dog so it costs a lot more. They are also extremely huge so their toys, beds, collars, etc are going to cost a lot more than a smaller dogs would. They also don’t live as long as other dogs usually because of their size, so they have a lot of vet bills for when they get older. They also eat a TON of food. So you would have to buy food more often than you would with a regular size dog.

We had a Newfoundland for 14 years, my buddy Kai. Born 10 days after me, He and I were unseperable, bought him as a shy puppy from a dog breeder and he was the best dog ever. I think he is the only Newfoundland that didn't like Swimming haha. He loved water and baths and stuff but sea and river swimming was not his thing at all! He loved to sleep, hours and hours day in and out. When I got home he grabbed my schoolbag and basically guided me to the couch so I could pet him (he did this to all of us). He loved to walk but not too much or too far, he was a house/garden dog and he loved to climb up the fence with his 2 front legs and look over the street and he let everyone pet him. He actually weakened the gate with his 85kg. (He was bigger then all the dogs in our neighborhood and bigger then most children lol). I miss my dude a lot, and if my girlfriend didn't mind drooling dogs, I would buy one right this minute. Hope you had a good life bro, rest easy❤

I have a 7 and a half month old Newfie and is by far the best thing I’ve ever done, they’re EXTREMELY expensive!! $100 a week for grooming $1000 a month for food/treats $$$$ garden is destroyed BUT I can’t wait to see him everyday! If you’re wondering we feed him k9 kravingz raw diet which is about $25 a day in food alone plus raw treats which includes turkey necks, duck necks, bones with marrow, goat milk, and many many many many more organic raw treats (he loves to eat) but at the end is all worth it to see them enjoy your company and wanna play, snuggle all day with you
@scott7008
@scott7008 3 жыл бұрын
Wohhh. All that stuff is not neccesary. One hour a day grooming is my average. Vets bills $1000 per year. (Im in a hot country). Food, $2.00 a day. Or $700 year. Walks, daily, 0.

WHOA!!! $25 a day for dog food??? I don't spend $25 a day on my own food!!! I think you have a case of the first time dog owner and you are spoiling your Newf. I just watched a few videos on K-9 Kraving. I can see why you like their food for your brand new Newf. I'm in DC and they are right up the road in Baltimore. If I had a Newf IDK if I would institute a raw foods diet. Isn't your pup gassy after eating all of that cruciferous veg, bone, and red meat? I am super interested in a healthy diet for my dog once I do get him, but the amount of coin you are dropping is just crazy to me!! There are families of 4 that don't spend a grand a month on their food.
@omarperez48
@omarperez48 3 жыл бұрын
@@CC-si3cr so there is a difference on feeding him raw , for one Newfie’s can have skin conditions if they don’t get the right food, not to mention their feces are tiny compared to what size they should be as their bodies can actually process natural food. I give all this to him completely frozen and keeps him from eating too fast or bloating. More than anything we wanna keep him as long as possible so we give him the best

We’re exactly one year in with our Newfie. He’s an absolute sweetheart, but it hasn’t been all rainbows. Our backyard is constantly littered with items from the house that he snags and takes outside to chew on. Shoes, backpacks, belts, headphones, blankets, stuffed animals, etc. When it’s time for a walk, or when he decides it’s time for a walk, he will literally not take no for an answer. I’ve been awaken in bed several times around 4am because he needed a walk right then and there. From what I’ve read, they really chill out after 24 months. We absolutely love him and I wouldn’t have chose another dog if I could go back, but be prepared for those first two years.

I owned a Newfoundland and he was a great dog. Just wanted to mention how much he loved water…a walk by the canal would always result in a splash sound, as he jumped straight in! He had no guarding ability, just too gentle. And if you live in a warm climate, don’t get one…they love cold and snow.

Two other reasons to give a hard think before getting a Newfie. First they are high maintenance, not just grooming. They are expensive (food, grooming, medical bills etc.) and they require a level of attention and companionship that some people depending on their circumstances, may not be able to meet. Second, life expectancy. Conceding the odd exception, ten years is about the most you can reasonably hope to get out of your Newfie. If you get more, that's great but you should not count on it. So be prepared for a roughly every ten years dose of heartbreak.

Hello, we live in quebec Canada, I would like to share a tip with you. Tonka is my newfoundland. He is 11 year old. He is such a gentle dog, we love him very much. About 3-4 year ago, Tonka was seriously insured. We consult an ostheopathe and were told that he had rupture his cross ligament ( knee) Tonka could not stand on his leg anymore. I started crush egg shells in my coffee grounder 1 tea spoon a day over his meal. In no time he got so much better. I even notice that it also help to keep his eyes clean and his general health.

I adore my Newfie and yes, all you say is very true. One other point, if you live in a hot climate, get another breed. They LOVE snow and the cold, but really struggle as it warms up, even with daily grooming to keep their undercoat from building up. I live in the north and moved here from AZ. I would NEVER subject one of these guys to the desert. Even up here, she has a pool in the shade to cool her off and is inside during the afternoons. Just a suggestion. They are very sweet, very easy to train and completely devoted. Mine still thinks she is a lap dog at 120 lbs, so boundaries or at least a good compromise on things like puppy snuggles (even as an adult) are in order because of their size. They are very accommodating.❤😊

Our family extended family has had Great Danes, Boxers, Great Pyrenees, Cairn Terriers and Labs. I would take my 9 year old Newf again in a minute. We live in the country. He keeps the predators out of the chicken coop and garden. He’s docile with the chickens, cats and kids. Kind and loving toward visitors. Barks at strange cars and walkers. Love’s to be near me while he’s resting during the day. Will play in the garden when we are outside. He sleeps in the garage with a dog door to a fenced backyard/run. That way he can listen and bark to keep predators away. He walks our larger grounds two times a day to mark for coyotes. He’s the most loving guy I’ve had. We live in Michigan and his drooling days are not bad, mostly on very hot days. We will likely never get a different breed. Bruno is the best dude ever.

I had one growing up. At about 6 months old I think he weighed as much as I did at age 8. And what you just described in reason #5 literally happened to me. One day we wanted to take him in the car; problem was, he knew the word "car"... knew what it meant when we grabbed his leash... and got really excited. So I had him hooked up on his leash, opened the front gate and he gave his first excited lurch to go for the car. Scared me because that was the first time I tried to walk him since he was like 8 weeks old, so I didn't expect *that* much power. I then made a HUGE mistake: I kneeled down next to him to try and calm him. No sooner did I do that then, he licked my face and then BOLTED for the car. Now in my 8 year old mind, all I saw was him running out into the street just as a giant truck sped by so I held onto that leash for dear life. How did this end? Well after about 10-15 feet I lost my grip and he did bolt for the street... except he went for our minivan, literally circled it twice looking for the open door, didn't find it, stopped on the non-street side, sat down on the grass and gave us this look of, "so... let me in already!"

Thank you for informing people wanting this giant dog. Ours was 185 lbs. and my wife was in love with him. These dogs have a shorter life due to their size and are on borrowed time after 7 years. Ours lived for a little over 8 years but really good years while he was here. They are not normal! They can be stubborn and are free willed. Lol thinking about his personality. I would NEVER recommend this breed unless you are willing to put up with a giant dog that doesn't listen to commands at times. Trainers will say all breeds are easily trained but a Newfy breeder that's an expert with them will tell you different. They are great dogs but be prepared for a totally different dog experience.

I would add another very important reason why you shouldn’t have a Newfoundlander: if you really care about your pet by no means take this dog if you live in warm regions. This dog is adapted to swimming in icy cold waters, and his coat will never leak water to his skin even if he has been in the water for hours. Life in warmer regions is a terrible suffering for him because there is no way to cool off. If you do take it, be prepared that it will not live long in warm conditions. And one more thing: be prepared for a lot of drooling. A lot.

Do you think the east coast is a bad spot for them?
2 жыл бұрын
@@alana-mf4np East coast of USA? I wouldn’t know, but I certainly wouldn’t have this dog where summer temperatures exceed 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit). They suffer BIG time. And I forgot one more thing ... In warm areas they shed (molt?) a lot of hair, and by that I mean a really large amount of hair.

@@alana-mf4np you can shave him, that’ll help a lot. Also, you can avoid taking him outside on hot days and keep him in with the ac on. I’m from Newfoundland, where the breed originated. It regularly gets 25 degrees here in the summer.

Question. If I live in Spain and we have salty sea water mostly, is it ok to get a Newfie? Or will the summer and salt kill him ?

One thing I never hear about in the Newfoundland is they are great herding dog mine will herd up cattle. I noticed it when they would herd up the puppies so I took mine out to the pasture with me told them to bring cows to the barn and they did it they done a great job so now the cows need brought up to the barn I just say bring them to the barn

Do they do well on boats and in warmer weather?? Werent they originally Nordic sailing dogs? I’m planning on sailing away in a few years and my Great Pyrenees passed recently and he hated swimming. Their size and demeanor are comparable plus the coat. I’d love a similar dog that swims. Is the heat a deal breaker that leads to sailors getting labradors?

In todays video as a former newfoundland dog owner il tell you what newfoundland dogs are great as long as you have a proper piece of real estate for him/her to run around they can be heavy sheders and food cost can be quite an expense excellent family dogs they drool a fair bit so keep that in mind as well 😀 👍 definitely not a good choice for townhouse or apartment life cramped areas or motel rooms lol

The owner was embarrassed and impressed as he never taught the dog to do this.

I have a Newfoundland. My mom fell in love with the idea after dealing with some heartbreak from shelter dogs who came with more issues than we knew and had to be rehomed for everyone’s safety. Mom loved the idea of a calm, gentle giant. Yeah…..my dog’s an asshole 😂 she barks at everything and everything, yanks on leashes, countersurfs and got rejected by a dog trainer because “she just doesn’t care what you think of her”. She’s famous amongst our family for shutting herself in time out before we actually knew what she did 😂🥲 we love her so much! But she’s such a jerk

I am lucky to have a female newfie for 10 years now .... I love her ! I have noticed however, they are extremely stubborn... They hear you but don't really give a f***k... i had many dogs before... But i trust her the most... Even with "loud" kids in her face, she somewhat pushes them away in a nonviolent manner... They also grunt a lot... very expressive dog... When i give her food even the cats come to eat with her from the same bowl, no problem. If she gets frustrated (cats like to cuddle with her and don't really get her), she makes something between a bark and a crying howl sound... Never had any health problems besides ear infections... lovable dogs... BE NICE TO THEM AND THEY NEED NO TRAINING "" !

I have been the lucky owner of two Newfies. The first, a male, was also a sort of guard dog 😀 My brother was coming to visit us, and as he had the key to our house he let himself in. I had forgotten to tell him about the new familymember 🙂 Everything went actually well, he was greated with much love, tailwagging, and slobber. But when he tried to go outside to get something from the car, the dog would not let him out. Guarded the door with growling and DEEEP barking. When my brother went back in, the dog followed, happy again. And this happened again when my brother thought it would be OK to go outside. The dog would not let him leave the house 😀 My brother was "trapped" in the house untill I got home from work 😀😀 No such thing happened for the rest of his stay. I had a hard time beliving my brother, so I had to wach the security cameras to see it with my own eyes.

Dude, number one should be drool. We have a drool rag that we have to carry around because our newf has constant shoe strings, and should you be too slow to catch them he will shake and fling them around your house to stick on the wall, furniture, one time my face, the kids, the tv, your brand new clothes, your mom when she visits… so much drool… so worth it. Best dog I’ve ever had.
