I have one of the previous Cub 12s. Put a 10 band EQ through the effects loop to alter the sound, then have all other effects into the front of the amp. Works a treat.
@TangoNevada6 ай бұрын
Ideally time based effects like Reverb, Delay, Chorus etc. Sound much better through the loop. Distortion, Overdrives and Wah Wah's sound better into the front. IE: Reverb sound much better added to an overdriven tone, than overdriving a reverberated tone.

I've got the old cub head. Took it into the recording studio a few months ago with Zu Zu Petals and was getting told to turn it down. In 1w mode. Which was a shame because it sounds epic when it has the power stage cranked and protesting. 15w is loud enough to upset a drummer but the power stage is not clean if you crank it loud. The not quite cleans are good to. I have mine all over the Rowena Straylight single. I think I used it for the bass as well with some creative EQ and blending in a very clean red-knob fender head for the low end. Didn't do so well for modern distortion, and it's a bit hit and miss with pedals. Good with a soul food, a crayon or ed the compressor. Tends to compress a bit much for my big delays even using the FX loop, and a bigger cleaner amp is better with more distortion oriented pedals like a DS1, dod grunge or a bigmuff. Tempted by the newer cub. But I kinda want a slightly bigger one. I think if I could find one doing 30 or 40w it could be perfect, perhaps switchable between full power, half power and 1w, but I've always got an attenuator if I need it.
@rowlandstraylight3 жыл бұрын
@Dave N it's a bit of a price jump but yeah. Also looking at ironhearts. The high gain channel on both goes a lot further than than but there's nothing to stop me using it like a single channel if it's right. Either would replace my blackstar HT40 combo which is ok but combos suck when there's a cab already mic'd on stage, and I'm finding the EQ on the blackstar a bit limited, especially on the clean channel.

Here are my two cents: I have tried A LOT speakers in this amp, modern and originals. For clean jazz tone the legend L 1218 is the best I have tried so far in it. A 16 ohmed G12T75 modern takes out the low mids so makes it sound very sparkly and fendery- good if you want to. A vintage V30 that had a dense steely tone- good for slide guitar. Greenbacks sound very woody, but are not my top choice. G1265- similar to the stock HH 1265 in many ways, very nice. The best was an EVM12L, original, in a thiele cab. And the best overall was an Eminence 16 ohm Lady Luck- unbelievable speaker. So good it make me email Eminence to ask for similar contemporary speakers of them (lady lauck is an OEM Emily speaker) and they informed me that their currently produced equivalents are the CV 75/ 65, Reignmaker, Governor and Legend L1275recommended- and they are correct, you may go with any of these!!! From Celestions for this amp I recommend: Alnico blue, gold, cream, ruby. G12H anniversary- not the Heritage. Any Creamback, especially the H75. V type first, A type second. G1265/ T75. 70-80/ G12P80. From Eminence those I mentioned first plus the GA SC64 plus many others. From Jensen C12N, K2, P12. This amp packs a lot of punchiness, boominess and low mids due to circuit design and small enclosure so you may need to compensate for that with the speaker choices. It is a GREAT amp, totally recommended.

Same schematic (I have the Monoprice 15W and compared it) and probably built in the same factory in Asia. Just the cabs seem to be different. Also, the Monoprice and HB use a real Accutronics spring reverb tank. Full disclosure: I am comparing to Laney Club 12R, not the Cub Super, Difference is the boost knob, but both sound great.

I have the old Laney Cub 15w head loaded with NOS RCA/Tungsram tubes. It sounds AMAZINGLY clean to clean ish, really great edge of breakup into OD. It's not a tight gain so keep that in mind with any heavy riffing, will need a pedal. Onboard reverb is AMAZING. It's really BASS heavy though on the 15w portion, like keep it on 2 or less heavy. I can't say enough how good the clean sound is.
