I grew up in the south and I remember every house having a gun rack. I made one in high school. Your project brought back some memories.

Donald I used a Lacquer Finish with a coat of paste Wax. I wrestled with the decision between the finish I used and A Tung Oil Varnish Finish.. Which was my first choice. I only chose to go with the Lacquer finish due to the time restraint.

Hey Nick, if you have access to a big box store like Lowe's or Home Depot or even a lumber supply store, you can pick up some select pine or even better some oak boards. This gun rack would look good made from oak, you could do a simple lacquer finish right out of the spray can or even a tung oil finish, these are both available at hardware stores. I have made a few oak gun racks and they looked very nice..

Thank you. I hope you get a chance to make one. It is a fun project and if you make the templates you can make as many as you would want.. If you do, Id love to see photos.

great job!! Nice to see a FL boy on here. Not too far from my fathers places in Wildwood. He was working on a few gun racks using 2 long cut pieces of cedar.

Nick the Tung oil Varnish brand is Formsby's Tung oil Varnish you can get it in semi gloss / gloss / and I think satin as well... not sure.I always use Gloss availabe at Lowes or home depot in the paint section where the stains and finishes are.

Thanks Graeme, In the video I didn't install a drawer stop, but I did add one after so the drawer couldnt be pulled all the way out. truth be known it would have been simpler to install had I done it before I glued and pin nailed the back on..lol

Should have offset the slots for the guns from side to side, so the firearms would set level.

That sounds perfect! I have both lowes and home depot nearby but always thought their selection was mostly just plain white pine type stuff. I'll have to see what they have, Oak sounds like it would be perfect. And I have heard a lot of good things about spray lacquer, or I may just try out a tung oil finish. Thanks!

Hey this is an awesome build. I want to build one of these to give my dad for christmas but I don't have a whole lot of woodworking experience. I don't really have access to nice hardwoods and I am just curious what kind of finish I could use with a not as nice wood to still make it look good? If my first one comes out good then I'll build a second with better wood once I get some.

Hey you shot a good video , did you fit a drawer stop? I seen a design that had a dowel fitted from the top down into the drawer space that caught the back of the drawer as it was pulled out, Graeme
