Most people don't know the standard etiquette for a concert piano performance. It's a little annoying, yeah... But I think it's more important to expose those people to this type of music/performance, rather than to deride them for expressing general appreciation.

By definition Ling Ling is an impossible level of skill, like the infinity of numbers, impossible to define or measure, like the Buddha and the state of enlightenment. Avery Milieu Won’t be the first to tell you this but Lang Lang is far from the best pianist out there. He is certainly one of the technically strongest in the world but if you ask anyone that watches classical music regularly they will tell you that he is very polarising. I definitely enjoy the way he reinvents and embellishes pieces like he does in his new album but he isn’t the one to listen to if you want to hear works played as they were written.

I enjoy wry humor and creative outlooks. Some folks are shackled to The Past as though nothing can change or grow. Have you ever seen an ancient tree? Or a boulder long set into the hillside? Covered with life - things growing off it, sinking roots into it and drawing energy from what they find there... Victor Borge (master pianist!) did a variation on "The Skater's Waltz" which was "classical" only because he was playing the piano.... Wildly funny, irreverent, inspiring to the child I was. For anyone who has ever studied classical piano, this album is absolutely stunning. I swear, if Mozart could hear Lang Lang playing his sonata, he would ask, "This is amazing. I wrote that song?" This album is his tribute to all of the great music written for beginning pianists. In his inimitable fashion, they all seem brand new. P.S. His left hand is demonic and completely out of control. Astounding. P.P.S. I would love to have a time machine for only one reason: to bring Scott Joplin here to watch this guy play his rag. He would be so tickled.
