Yundi’s lyricism and interpretation of Chopin is beyond comparison. I tend to view Lang Lang’s playing as more commercial and a bit acrobatic. I first heard Lang Lang when he was not quite known in L.A. and liked his playing. He became commercial. Yundi’ s playing is musical.

Li Yundi wins this one, at least for me. But I probably don’t have the rights to say that... they both play way better than me lol. I think Lang Lang plays faster but the interpretation Li Yundi definitly wins. Also at 8:19 I love how he gradually spreed up instead of an immediate change of speed from slow to fast. It’s like it gives us a chance to slowly wake up from the dreamy state instead of a sudden shock. Also this is the part I think he beat Lang Lang by: 0:15 vs 5:26 he did it so much better, where u can actually feels the fantasy. I think Lang Lang did it too fast and the first few notes of that part was the same loudness. And he made the accented notes too loud and the others too quiet. I think Li Yundi did a good balance, still hears the melody but can also hear the other notes which is what makes it sound like a fantasy.

Lang Lang is just speed. He did have a lot of musical touch though. I think Lang Lang kind of sped through the beginning. Yundi Li played the beginning very fast too, but it was more elegant and flowing, like all of Yundi's pieces.

Both are skill-wise, or say technically perfect. But for musical interpretation Yundi WAS definitely better. But this was 6~7 years ago. Recently Lang Lang has also been growing a lot on the insight of musical interpretation part. One can easily tell the difference of how much emotion in Lang Lang's recent plays from the same piece that he played 6 years ago. For sure that Yundi has always been great since 2000 on his musical understandings, especially for Chopin's pieces. Well now at 2020 I would say Lang Lang is catching up at the same level, at least not like this comparison many years ago that we can easily tell who was better at the time.

Lang Lang has for example made the best performance I've ever heard of Für Elise, and when I check it now I see that the video is pretty new, so I guess that he is older and has been working a lot with his interpretation skills.

Long story short, Langlang does not have proper family education, and is pretty aggressive. That's why the interpretation is not good. And most songs he play, a sense of chaos can be found. But I do agree with you that Langlang is good as well, but only in term of the techniques, not interpretation and body performance.

I have to say Yundi Li's rendition was far superior. Lang Lang, despite his great mechanical playing, lacked expression as shown by Yundi Li. By no means is Lang Lang a poorer pianist; I think the true difference lies in that Yundi's rendition of this piece was far more poetic and expressive. Thus, it comes with no surprise that Yundi Li was the youngest winner of the Chopin competition :)

Lang Lang did fine. This piece is hard. He put his feelings and personality in it. He was very expressive. In my opinion, Lang Lang's personality is a bit better than Yundi Li's. I was very moved by Lang Lang's playing. On the other hand, Yundi Li"s playing is more fast and fluid. It was more of a serious feeling. I think they both played good. Lang Lang was more like "This music is enjoyable. I'll make the audience think that too." While Yundi Li is like, "How can I make this music so the crowd might like the music better?" In my opinion, they both did well in their own way. Thank you for posting this video. This is a great thing I can refer to when I practice this piece.

In this case, as I find in most cases of Lang Lang's performances, his ego and gyrations at the keyboard are obstacles and distractions to making music and the composer's intent. Yundi, goes beyond the printed page and seeks to find what lies behind the pages, works it out, and brings it forth. Yundi clearly has a beautiful velvet sound and well-trained ear. Lang Lang has a beautiful sound as well, but an emotional depth is missing somehow. Unfortunately, once the performer's ego overshadows the music and composer's intentions, the performance of a given work takes a back seat. And the listener is presented with a shallow, "Reader's Digest" version of the work.

I listened and realized Lang Lang emphasize on his right hand more, the running lead notes are very firm and clear, note by note and precise, technically strong! Lang Lang is very fast in the main part, but when it comes to the happy moment, it is so slow. Then the transition from the happy to the sad is very long. Then at the end it is too soft and slow at the same time! While Yundi Li has more strength and more reason into this song. More romantic and serious in the sense of this song. The song he played is advanced, so he took more time into it and also the song isn't getting rushed. So I side with Yundi Li. Sorry Lang Lang. Lang Lang was a little bit off the hook in taking time into the song. They were both good. I believe. To me, Lang Lang is a musical genius whereas Yundi Li is what has been said of the Nobel winning physicist Richard Feymann: he is "no ordinary genius." He is way above what it takes to be called a genius. Though I dislike the idea of comparing pianists by ethnicity or race, that's probably one of the reasons many people think of these two together. So if we are comparing "Chinese pianists", I would say the both Yuja Wang and Yundi Li are at the top for me. Lang Lang is an outstanding pianist, however. I can understand that some people may like him the best. Especially on this piece, however, I'm not surprised that most of the comments seems to be running in favor of Yundi Li.

A big difference is in the beginning, LangLang's sounds somewhat mechanical and "tinny", whereas Yundi's version sounds smoother and has a nicer buildup. I was first going to give them the benefit of a doubt and say that a different piano could produce a different tone. BUT, I noticed that Yundi adds a slight sustain pedal, which makes all the difference. Both are amazing pianists though.

My favorite interpretation of this piece is that of Arthur Rubenstein, but I don't understand why people are criticizing Lang Lang's version JUST because it's fast. It's like they ignored his phrasing and dynamics entirely. I personally thought his version was better than Yundi's because Lang Lang makes certain themes really shine whereas Lundi kind of just brushes past them. Anyways, they're both phenomenal players. Actually guys I think the speed that Lang Lang is playing it at is correct because it's in 2/2 or cut time which means two beats per measure, so if you were to look at it on the sheet music there are quite a lot of notes per measure, so that's the reason why he has to play really quickly because the two beats run out quickly.

These accelerated versions lose intention and the natural harmony that has a bell to ring at a certain speed. They can be virtuous pianists, unique in its speed, but not excited its interpretation. The version that really gets to the heart is that of Claudio Arrau .

All talented concert pianists have their own ways of expressing the music of the composers. It depends on the listeners how they will be affected by the different rendition of the music pieces.

Lang Lang has an aggressive playstyle. In my 22 years of playing, I can agree that Lang Lang has a better grasp at rhythm than Yundi. However, Yundi's expression is ten times more than Lang Lang's version. Capturing Fantasie Impromptu the way Chopin intended leans more towards Yundi Li here. Yundi Li can convey Chopin's darker pieces better than Lang Lang can. What Lang Lang has done to the Butterfly Etude and Chopin's Waltzes has a better joyous feeling within the rhythm.

I do prefer Yundi Li's interpretation, but I disagree with those of you saying that Lang Lang was trying to play it as fast as possible, or trying to set a speed record. It was really just his interpretation. If you need any clarification, go listen to the 2nd section of his interpretation.

There is a difference as between day and night. Undoubtedly, Yundi Li is vastly superior.

+André Uhres yes there is sure a huge difference, but first of all in the SOUND QUALITY of both recordings: Lang´s recording is poor and flat while Yundi´s is brilliant with a rich sound environment !

Rolf Eichele could a better sound quality compensate for his shallow musical expression and clumsy phrasing? I strongly doubt it.

Im 22, first time I listen to yundi li I was 15 and I just dont find no one that play like that Chopin... Maybe kissin but not lang lang at all
