Langfiles Ep. 15: Languages Of Russia

Let's look at another country for its languages: Russia. As the biggest country we've looked at, there's bound to be a lot of variation within the country. No political intent is meant to be exuded from the creation of the video.

I just noticed the Russian flag you used in the thumbnail, I like how you always use the best flags which represent the people in your videos such as the red and white Byelorussian flag and the correct Hawai`ian and Maori flags. I usually hate this term but it is truly is based.

It's amazing to see how diverse Russia is. It's easy for someone to look at a map and assume a country is homogenous, but a large empire will of course have many different peoples within it. I'm surprised you didn't mention the Yeneisan Family however.

@@seid3366 It's nearly extinct due to a massively orchestrated ethnic cleansing during the Russian Empire, I believe only one language in the Yeniseian language family exists now (called Ket), making it an isolate. It's a sad story of decline given that this language family once had over a million speakers and around 15 languages but now only has one remaining language with 20 known speakers today. It was also instrumental in developing the Dene-Yeniseian hypothesis (still widely regarded as speculative), it's worth making a video about in the future.

In my research, I wasn't able to find info about Polish speakers in Russia, but I assume some speakers do live in the country.

I read that there are in Kazahstan, from deported Poles. But very few in current Russia.
