In this episode, we’ve put together a language challenge between two Iranian languages, Persian and Balochi. For any questions, suggestions or feedback, contact us on Instagram:

Bahador (@BahadorAlast): / bahadoralast
Balochi (بلوچی‬) is classified as a Northwestern Iranian language and is primarily spoken by the Baloch people. Iran and Pakistan are the two countries with a large Balochi population, but there is also a very significant Baloch population in Afghanistan, Oman, Turkmenistan, and the UAE. In Iran, the Baloch people are also among the Sunni minority as they are predominantly followers of Sunni Islam. In this episode, Mojtaba (Balochi speaker from Chahbahar in the Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan) challenges Mahtab (a Persian speaker from Mashhad) with a list of Balochi words and phrases. Mahtab also has the help of Howard, who despite being Korean, due to his close relations with Toronto’s Iranian community, aims to provide some assistance. The Persian language (Farsi) has had a huge amount of impact on other languages and cultures, mainly the Middle East, as well as Central and South Asia. Classified as one of the Western Iranian languages, Persian holds official status is Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan. Persian has strongly influenced many different languages, including numerous Turkic languages, as well as well as Armenian, Georgian, and many languages in the Indian subcontinent. Persian has a long history of literature and it was notable for being the first language in the Muslim world to break through Arabic's monopoly on writing. The Persian language has also influenced the Arabic language, although the impact of Arabic on Persian has been higher. But the influence of Persian in the Muslim world has been strong since the early days of Islam. It was even established as a court tradition instead of Arabic under many ruling Muslim dynasties.

TA Videos Well, what they are saying isn't far from what I had heard. Although I am not 100% certain about this, but my understanding was the the Baochi people were originally from even more West of present-day Iraq, more around the area in Western Syria, and they migrated eastwards and settled in the region of present-day Eastern Iran/Western Pakistan.

WOW, it's amazing! I always wanted to listen Balochi "alive" because this language is so similar to Slavic, it shows more accurate matches then any other West Iranian language. "To koja shote?" = Rus. "Ty kuda shedshii?" (it sounds a little broken in Russian but well inderstood). Dad = Rus. Died, Chacha = Diadia, Berat = Brat. Awaiting for Balochi-Russian, or even better Balochi-Ukrainian challenge asap!

rdtgr8 Very interesting. "Ti kuda "shehdshi" is new for me cuz in our dilact i didnt hear people use it.Our people usually say "Ti kuda pashol" It means Like "we're did u go" or " Ti Kuda Shol" means "were u were going or heading " or "Ti kuda Hadil" which means "we're did u went".All these sentrnces has diffrent wording But same meaning. But I never heard "shedshi" in our dialect Cuz Russian language has lots of dialects maybe it's suitable for some dialects.
@rdtgr8
@rdtgr8 6 жыл бұрын
Zareen GULABI Yes, this is why I noted it sounds a little broken. If I say "Ty kuda BYL shedshii?" (where WERE you going?) it would sound OK. And yes you're right, "Ty kuda shol?" is more common

I would assume that kind of closeness is due to common retention of archaic forms rather than a direct connection. East Iranians languages are famous for archaicism so would be even closer to Slavic I think. The old Sogdian language in particular has a distinctive (not even found in its modern descendant Yaghnobi) way of grouping together consonants between syllables that is reminiscent of evolution of Slavic syllabification. The unique phonological development of Slavic has even been attributed to contact with East Iranian Cimmerian or Scythian tribes who lived side-by-side with Slavs in ancient Steppes, effectively cutting it off from more conservative Baltic.

Salam , Finally ! I requested for it and here it is. Thank you for doing this Just wanna point out that the balochi being used by the balochi speaker here is a bit different compared to the ones we use, when it comes to down to a few words for example he said mama , which is also right for referring to uncle, just not completely because those words could be picked out from the surrounding this specific balochi speaker has grown up in. We use it as 'naku' which is the origin word for uncle in balochi Also at the beginning he says 'chu ne' which is the commom and primarly used line for how are you. Could also be used as 'chito re' in balochi which sounds a lot like 'chitori in farsi' and more words that match like hastey , niestey , kaar , baley , bebaksh, chi , kujai, the numbers and many more basic conversation words. which is completely the same in both the languages, in meaning as well as pronunciation. So personally I feel this balochi speakers balochi is a bit different. different places comes with different pronunciation and words used depending from the surrounding you grew up in I guess Point is , I wanted to pick out the similarities of balochi and farsi in this particular video but it was rather quite the opposite I have to say 😂 Anwyays, Much love and appreciation from dubai looking forward to more of your work ! :D

Actualy cetori in Persian is from an hybrid-Arabic origin: ce (Persian) + tor (Arabic). In Original Persian we would say "Cuni?" (Chooni?) Or "Ceguneyi?" (Chegooneyee?). So it actually has the same origin chone & chuni

Cool video. I am a Baluch, and to be clear; Baluchi has a lot of dialects, but this Baluch guy mixes a lot of Urdu words into his Baluchi language (this is a result of Pakistani occupation of east-Baluchestan) and therefore all the words are not correctly Baluchi. Father = Pet Dad/Daddy= Baba/Abba/Man-pet (mani pet). We often say: my-father when we call our fathers. Uncle= Kaka/Nako, The word he said was "mama and chacha" which is Urdu! not Baluchi. Rice= we also say Brenj when it is uncooked, but when cooked we say Bath. Grandfather= Pirok. The word he said was Dada which is also Urdu... The closest languages to Baluchi are Farsi and Kurdish. Ancient Persian languages are very similar to the pure Baluchi language. He got some words wrong, not his fault - it is a political issue. The Baluchi language is ancient and is dying out slowly or should I say being killed by occupying forces.

Mily TM, I think there is a common misconception amongst many Iranians and that is that Afghan’s are asiastic looking because of the many Hazara people they see living in Iran who come from Afghanistan. Hazara people are one of the few Mongolic ethnic groups living in Afghanistan along with Uzbeks and Turkmens who are both Turko-Mongol in origin. The vast majority of Afghans are either Pashtun or Tajik both of whom have Caucasian features like other Iranians as they are Eastern Iranian people. Please research more into Afghan people and you will learn of the many different ethnic groups that constitute the demographics of Afghanistan. 🙂

Balochi indeed has more similarities with Slavic, and it shows more accurate shape of these matches. For example in Persian magz, but in Balochi maz(h)g = Rus. mozg "brain". In Persian atash / atish, but in Balochi ach = Rus. ocha-g_ "fire(place)". In Persian baxsh, but in Balochi bashk ---> bashchati, which goes to Ukrainian pro-bachaty and Rus. pro-shchati "to forgive" (looks like Russian version is reduced). Also some samples sounds very Ukrainian: Balochi jinik = Ukrainian zhinka "woman, wife", Balochi tajen-ag = Ukr. tiagn-uty "to stretch", Balochi tech-ag "to make somebody to run away" = Ukr. v-techa "escape". You see ;)))

Zareen GULABI In Russian this is being written like прощать, this final Ь (so called Soft sign) is actually very short I. Your spelling proshat does not reflect this. Also Щ is not SH, despite yes Russians pronounce it close to Persian soft SH. But in such languages like Belarusian, Ukrainian this is SHCH, and in Bulgarian this is ST. Btw, perfective aspect for proshchati will be proSTiti (here you see this SHCH / ST interchange before I which explains why this is ST in Bulgarian)

As a Baluch, I saw this coming (the loan words the speaker was using),the reason for this is because the Baluchi speaker is from Makran or Makoran(a southern mountainous and coastal region of Baluchistan in Pakistan and Iran) and the speaker was speaking in Makorani dialect which has a lot of Urdu loan words and influence because of the close proximity it has with Pakistan.

Chune is an old and ancient Baluchi word. Both mama and day are wrong words for uncle. mama is Urdu and dayi is farsi. Uncle in Baluchi is kaka or nacho and we don't differentiate between uncle from mothers or fathers side. Brenj is rice when it is uncooked, and bath is rice when cooked an edible, but the word bath can be different in many of the dialects. Baba joon is also farsi, word for grandfather in Baluchi is Pirok, and we often call our grandfathers by "Waajah". Word for grandmother is Bállok. There are nothing called "Iranian version of Baluchi" nor "Pakistani version of Baluchi" these are just farsi or Urdu words many have replaced in our language because of the ethnic cleansing of Baluch people and it is important that you know this.

FYI - Balochi language spoken in Pakistan's Baloch populated areas has three primary dialects - Western Rakhshani dialect, Southern Makurani dialect and Eastern Suleimani dialect. Western Rakhshani dialect is the same dialect spoken in Iran’s Sistan va Balochistan province.

I'm Punjabi and I guessed a lot of the words, like "bachelook" (bache log), and we say "Mama/chacha" and also Kaka for uncle. Berat (Brother) is also close to our language, we say "Bhraa"

A lot of the Baloch words seem similar to Hindi and other Indian languages. We call rice bhat in Bengali for example, friend can be sangi; Chacha and dada mean exactly the same in Hindi

Balochi is so much similar to farsi but this guy in black makes it to much complicated for the persion team , he mixed urdu language with balochi like,,chacha,,mamu,&,dada,. In balochi naku means uncle and peerok for grandfather ..even his balochi pronounciation was not good though
