I really don't like it when people come up to me and say "wow you're so talented, I wish I could learn languages like you." Like, you can. It just takes lots of time and effort but sure, if you're not willing to invest all that you won't be able to do it. But going up to people saying they're "lucky" and so "talented" kind of discredits them and the blood and sweat they put into language learning. And honestly this goes for every kind of hobby. Sure, some people really are prodigies, but still they put immense effort in what they're doing. 🙂

exactly. people say this kind of stuff to me, and it's really started to bother me because i spend every free second on languages. it's not like i woke up one morning and could magically speak czech. it's been 6 years, involving lots of tears and frustration

I'm Indian and it's quite common to be bilingual or multilingual in our country. I grew up speaking two Indian languages and English, so three in total. My "friends" used to tease over my usage of English in daily life, but English was my favourite subject in school, so I used to deliberately practice it and my friends didn't. Fast forward now, one of the friends got pissed off because we both interviewed for the same job (it required good communication skills in English) and I got it. He said things like it was so easy for me, blah blah. As if I hadn't fallen in love with the English language and read as much literature in it as I could, as if I hadn't spent more than a decade consuming media in English and he to this day hasn't watched so much as a film in English. People will always try to put you down to make themselves feel better, try to demotivate you. Don't fall into that trap please.

from a life long language learner, there is no best resource, I think it just depends on your interest. like Im fluent in english and can discuss complex engineering processes with people because thats my discipline, but when a doctor or worse a chemist starts talking about compounds and reactions they might as well be speaking Icelandic to me. 🤣

Let me save you a ton of pointless planning: 1. watch videos in your target language with subtitles 2. read books in your target language 3. put that dictionary back on the bookshelf, it's only distracting you from learning 4. if a book is too difficult for you at the moment, put it aside and try again later 5. repeat for 5000 hours That's all the planning you need unless you're in a hurry. Everything on top of that is a nice bonus that'll cut a few hundred hours at best.

Yes! I watched this video looking for advices for learning Japanese (which is gonna be my third language) but I’m also using English which is not my native language. I don’t know, but for me it’s a satisfactory feeling.

The mindset part is so true! Especially if you are bad at languages in school, that does not mean your bad at learning languages! I sucked at English and French in high-school, it was no fun at all for me and my grades were bad. But after that, I became fluent in English and Japanese and had tons of fun while studying and practicing!

You are absolutely right. I'm guilty of thinking too much about the studying method I should use. "Should I focus only on listening and reading?" "Should I use flashcards?" etc. I end up taking very little action. I need to remind myself that it's more important to take action than to keep thinking about how I'm going to take it.

When I was a kid, I used the "retro" version of lingo pie: I had a DVD of Addams family which was dubbed in sooo many languages (even Hungarian!) and after I watched it so many times in my native language I knew it all by heart and got bored, so I just watched it in all kinds of different languages and even picked up some words lol

That's actually one of the biggest problem i often encounter when learning a new language, i just feel like there's a need for me to learn so much or widen my vocabularies in order for me to communicate freely but to be honest it consumes me so much to the point of feeling extremely overwhelmed and bombarded. It stressed me out and i always felt like i'm not making any progress at all and always goes back to square 1. Hopefully one day i will overcome all these obstacles and learn the language in a more effective and efficient approach.

I get too overwhelmed when I want to study more languages at once. I need goals, but sometimes I get too ambitious and wanna do so many things during the day and I can't do it and end up giving up. One of my goals would be to get a C1 certificate in English since I need it for my university. Because of this I can't manage to study another language at the same time, even if I'd love to.

The CAE test is kind of brutal. And I took it years ago so I don't know how difficult it must be now. I'd highly recommend focusing on training for that before even thinking of studying other languages.

I love language learning. It’s fun to me. I started with English 15 years ago when I was 13 and now I’m starting Korean. It’s harder now because I have less time and I’m more mentally tired but still, it’s so fun!

@@bissiimk3688 I also use KZbin! I have textbooks like Korean grammar in use which I scan the QR code’s they provide in the book and they bring me to the audio files, I practice by listening to what the audio says and I say it into Siri! Thank you!

You may enrol on Coursera. I'm learning Korean as well. Have finished the First Step Korean and Learn to Speak Korean from Yonsei university thru coursera. Currently doing the Korean for Beginners specialization from St. Petersburg U (coursera as well). I'm doing them while practicing vocabulary and sentence structures through Duolingo. I know a lot of people hate Duolingo but I'm loving it! I find coursera and duolingo a great combination at the same time following on-going kdramas on Netflix. 😊

People who say it's a magical gift make me laugh, but it's also kind of offensive, it's almost like it dismisses all the hard work that person did. The only tip that doesn't feel like it fits me is the part about writing too much. Writing really helps me to remember; there have been times I've been trying to remember a Korean word and then I can "see it" in my mind from when I wrote it down. Even writing out rules in English help me to remember them.

I appreciate this video so much! I learnt English when I was younger and it came very natural to me, so everyone (me included!) always thought “oh you’re so talented at learning languages, it comes so easy to you!” This belief was so rooted in me until I went to uni for languages (German and Arabic) and I hit a wall, and realized I didn’t really have a “talent” and I needed to work hard to learn new languages! This was eye opening for me and I struggled with motivation for so long! Channels like yours actually help a lot! Thanks so much for always having our backs! 💛

Hey Lindie, you are so right in saying that learning languages ( or probably any other thing ) isn't a matter of natural ability. First, you need top be motivated and intrigued, not only by the language also by the culture and people behind. From then on, it's a matter of building up skills. The clearer your understanding of your own language and underlying grammar, the easier it gets to learn others. Indoeuropean languages start basically from a common ground, such as modal verbs take Infinitive forms, passive require to be + participle. It's easy to adapt once you associate that automatically. It gets tricky with completely different languages for totally different mind sets. Once you already speak a few languages, you very often know how to focus on learning another one, at least of you can connect with the language for a common ground. As a German speaking English, Spanish and French fluently and with communicative skills in Valencian/Catalán, I'm learning Dutch now, which is extremely motivating for having easy and fast progress. Thanks, Lindie!! I would add that watching videos like yours and those from the Polyglot Gathering, etc. helps keep me motivated and encouraged in my language learning journey. Unfortunately, I've found that native speakers of the language that I'm learning are usually the greatest source of negativity or discouraging comments. When people constantly tell you that their language is "so hard" or correct you for things that you don't say wrong but different from the way that they would say them or try to tell you how to go about learning their language (as if they ever studied their native tongue!), I find this discouraging. Every week I have to listen to podcasts and watch KZbinrs like you who talk about how it IS possible to learn foreign languages to keep me going. And it's working!! I'm learning and amazing my friends!

That is a good idea. Figure out what conversation topics you are interested in and learn the grammar and vocabulary that is associated with that. If you want to talk about your family, hobbies, the Olympics, and so on, learn the grammar and vocabulary that is associated with that.

I'm two months into aquiring Euro Portuguese and have accumulated over 100 hours of reading, listening, watching KZbin, some italki classes but the bulk of those 100 hrs are passive listening like while I'm doing chores or riding the bike or working out I listen to podcasts. I'm at 900 words and phrases on my goldlist 36 lists of 25 and I'm able to understand things even the news at an A2 level. I like writing things down but not copying text books, I usually look for content I like online and write them down in my notes to read later (I like to have my eyes rest from gadgets). I'm also reading Harry Potter 1 and O Alquimista in Portuguese to add to my vocab. summary: 100 hrs of input from reading, listening, watching in target langauge.

I am a Spanish native speaker, but I really want to improve my English. I have been taking classes since January 2020, but I do not feel ready to take the last exam of the course. English tenses are so weird for me! Also... This is not my favorite language, and it is too hard to find the motivation to continue learning and improving in those topics that I still do not understand (prepositions, how to ask or give directions, when you have to use a specific verb tense, uff... those modal verbs...). Listening, comprehension and speaking are not my problems; but I have heard that you do not need to focus in grammar, but my professors said the opposite and IT IS SO CONFUSING AND DEMOTIVATING. But well, thanks for this video, Lindie. 🥺❤️

Depends on what's your goal? if you're taking CEFR exams you absolutely need to focus on grammar. One of the tests (Use of English) is literally a grammar test.

@@morphinpink Well, I am going to take the ELASH. Need to get (at least) B1 level, that's the minimum. I was thinking about focus on what they're asking for in that exam (correct grammar, writting and listening skills), because I think we are not getting the speaking exam. Once I finish the English program, I will start with my own self-study plan... just want to be able to communicate correctly. 🥺

That's similar to how I learn a new language. I imagine a situation when/where I'll be using that language and then I "prepare" the conversations that may take place.

I think one main obstacle to learning "small" languages is lack of access. I mean to movies in the language with good subtitles in your native one, interesting radio-broadcasts, books in easy language, people to speak it with... National languages are made difficult on purpose, to make it easy to distinguish "insiders" from "outsiders". Auxlangs like Esperanto don't have such artificial difficulty

It's truee that you can learn everything if you devote time effort and persistence BUT I also think that there are some people who are more inclined to "catch" languages. Just like there are people who are more inclined and they understand math better

I agree with you, but also someone who's willing to learn a new language, even if they don't have the "talent", will probably make more progress than somebody who might be good at learning languages, but just don't study. Same for math, music and others. So in a nutshell, I believe that effort is way more important than just talent. (Of course, effort + talent will make even more progress, but I think u got my point haha)

Your video do inspire me a lot to learn a new language. Currently I am learning Chinese as my 4th language since the beginning of this year. At the beginning, I do struggle a lot since I just learn through KZbin videos, but I increase my way of learning through Hello Chinese, using a Chinese text book with the audio, having conversation at Tandem and I start to understand some of the basic conversation within 7 months.

I can speak 3 languages (English,hindi, punjabi) all very perfectly. Its most common to find trilinguials in india and i am currently working on korean. People say it has no future opportunities, learn french spanish etc.. it would be more easy, but my reason for learning korean is that the language amazes me. I have often experienced depression. Indeed, 8 1/2 years ago, I was almost at the point of calling the suicide hotline. However, for me, language learning is a medicine for melancholy. I’m 54 years old and I want to learn as much Chinese as I can. I can’t study other languages in depth right now but I’m hoping that will change. Chinese characters, both traditional and simplified, are like works of art.

Learning Chinese, I've reached the level I'm at and at this point I'm understanding like one sentence out of every ten in the Chinese media I consume. Now it's getting much harder to get that two out of ten than it felt like it was to get to one out of ten.

I am currently learning Irish Gaelic on Rosetta Stone and loving it. There aren't a lot of resources for Gaelic, unfortunately, so I was thrilled that Rosetta Stone had something. I like using it because there is barely any English. You are presented with a picture and Gaelic words/phrases. You have to use context clues to figure out what is being said. Sometimes, it can be hard so I go to an Irish-English dictionary. Overall, I am loving this and very grateful for this resource. For shows, I find TGA, which is an all-Irish station and they have English subtitles. Congrats to everyone on their language journey! We can do this!

I was trying to give language learning advice to one of my friends and I couldn't organize my thoughts and put them into words. You just spoke out my mind in an organized, understandable way! Thank you so much! Now I have words to explain what I was trying to explain. and, thank you for the advice "don't spend more time on planning than actually studying". Even though I know this, and give this advice to others, I always spend more time planning than actually studying. Someone has to remind me this once in a while XD

The first thing i would say is choose the language you want to learn, a lot of parents try to force their kids to learn a certain language, that does not always work, the other thing is have fun it could be thru movies or music , the textbook method never really worked for me because it's just words without context (i'm not saying you shouln't use it) for me personally i learned english thru youtube and just media in general. Today i teach english and i am studying korean (i hate it here lol).What i know is if you like what you are watching or listening you will emerge and learn.

Thank you for this video🙏🥰 I am having trouble times to planning😅 I like listening more. When I listen, I learn vocabularies more easly. That's why I use youtube a lot. I have struggle with textbooks and I think textbooks not for me. I like doing my own questions. If I repeat that sentences or vocabs, I can start thinking in that language after 1 month. That's my process of learning. Also I use e- dictionary a lot.

I agree! Find content that you enjoy that is going to be more useful to what your goals are. If you want to have more input that could be likely used in output find enjoyable content that can help with that. (Slice of life shows as opposed to crime dramas for example). Nice video!

I want to learn Russian, in my case I love art and I found many tutorials in Russian, so my goal is to learn enough to understand it. For now I would say that my progress is very slow, but at least I realize that I know more words than last week and understand more than before. To learn English it helped me a lot to listen to music in that language, so I do the same with Russian.

I remember my old school, high-school, and college days when I passed all my exams with flying colors. Many people said, "Wow, you're so lucky! I wish I were that good at studying too... " My reaction was along the lines of "excuuuuse me?! I've been working hard every day, so I could learn all that stuff for my exams, including subjects I really hate. It's not a matter of luck nor talent. It's just willpower to work hard instead of slacking off. " In fact, even if you have a kind of "natural talent", it might be 20% of your success at most. The remaining 80-100% comes from willpower to work hard and do whatever it takes. Greetings from Spain!

I’m learning Korean now and it’s been 8 months and my study method is if I don’t write it down then I don’t remember it I could read a word or a sentence multiple times but unless I write it down somewhere, I wouldn’t remember it, I also realized writing down transliteration was actually stopping me from progress so I stopped, my notes at the beginning had a lot of English translations but now I have a lot of notes without the English translation because when I look at the sentences I’m like I know this word and this word so this sentence has to do with this person doing this action but I don’t know what this particular word is so I google it, for me I realized not putting the English translation also helped a lot because the more I searched for the translation each time I forgot the word in a sentence or the whole sentence the more it stuck so anywhere I saw that sentence or word I immediately remember this means this and playing around with words and making sentences of my own also helped a lot, I still have a really long way to go and still have a lot of learn. I set goals for myself like I want to be able to have a basic conversation in two years or I want to be able to read and write Hangul in 6months without struggling, I think my third month I was already able to read Hangul at a normal pace even though I had no idea what 95 percent of the words meant😂. I just had that little joy that I can read a whole sentence without struggling so that little achievement kept encouraging to keep going, I’ve had days when I want to give up but I just look back at the progress I’ve made and be like look how far you’ve come, last year you didn’t even know what hello was. Oh this is a long post lol. Just gonna conclude with find what methods work for you, if you don’t know yet try different things what works for person A might not work for person B and have fun with it. Don’t set unrealistic goals, please this is why a lot of people give up because they set unrealistic goals for themselves

@@jebewonn I would be lying if I say I don’t study everyday but I don’t study intensively every day, they are Days I study for like two hours and there are days I study for about 10 minutes or 20. I try to stop the moment I feel exhausted, sometimes I study without the intention of trying to study like when I come across a word or sentence while watching kdrama and I search what each word in the sentence mean. For me studying in the morning I find it’s better than studying at night so what I do is, I study in the morning and then just revise at night and whatever I don’t remember I write them down and relearn them the next morning and add like a new word or sentence. Also sometimes I don’t try to learn new words I just revise all the words I’ve learnt to see if I’ve forgotten any words or sentences. There is no point learning new words and sentences if you can’t retain them right. So let’s say the whole week I’m studying then I take two days to revise what I’ve learnt. Then I don’t try to learn more than 5 words or sentences a day even if I feel like I’ve got it and I can do more I never go past 5. Everyone is different some Learn 1 word or sentence per day and some learn 10 for me I choose 5 because it’s what’s I’m most comfortable with

Thank you for this video. I was book learned in French for 7 years because my mother wanted me to know it for France's rich history and culture. I lived in Italy for 3 years and could get from point A to point B. I think about relearning both, but a language I've been inspired to learn lately is Ukrainian. A mistake I've made is over-relying on passive, low-effort input activities. Like just watching a YT video without good concentration, and ignoring any parts I missed or don't understand. Although this does work to a degree, it's painfully slow. In my experience, input works better if you put in more effort. Really try to focus and understand as much as possible. Rewind or reread as many times as needed. When you get lost, stop to look up key words and grammar. Continually push yourself into more challenging material. It's tiring, but it really helps. My general rule is, if you feel mentally exhausted after 20-30 minutes, you're probably doing it right. This is a point that often seems to get lost amid the popularity of the "comprehensible input" approaches. People imply you can just "Netflix and chill" while the language effortlessly soaks into your brain. Maybe that works for some people, but in my experience, it's way too slow.

Hi Lindie, hope you're doing great (big fan of yours). How do I know if I'm not putting enough effort or being lazy in my language learning? I have a variety of resources and methods but the one I use the most is Comprehensive Input. Do you see this as an effective way to learn a language? Or an escape from the hardships of learning a language?

I think Stephen Krashen once in a direct with Matt vs Japan said that the only thing that left was a kind of Graded Reader for audiovisual content, and I think Lingopie could be like the definitive tool for lenguage learning, I haven't try it yet but boy I'm so hyped.
