I'm with you on gigachad scale. I dropped Chinese because I wanted to focus solely on Japanese for now, but the little amount of Chinese I've learned just made me feel so, so cozy. I love this language to bits. It also helped me through my grief after my father died. It's absolutely worth learning and Chinese donghua can seriously rival anime. And Faye Wong.

I would suggest Arabic 🇵🇸 or Russian 🇷🇺, next. They’re great. The German 🇩🇪 one is nice, too. I’m gonna have to re-watch the English 🇬🇧 one, to really form my opinion, on that one, because I hardly remember anything of it. The hardest part about spoken Mandarin is the intonations, but the actual words themselves, there are nearly all, if written in pinyin, 2 or 3 letter words that are mostly pretty simple to say. It's just saying them with the right intonation is where you get into trouble. Of course, there is the added complexity that putting two or more of these words together can create a completely new word, often unrelated to any of the base words. Not like how Germans compound words into endless monstrosities, no, Chinese is very different in what is going on in this regard. But even so, it should be manageable for most people with a mind for learning languages to get along with this, at least as far as speaking goes. Now written Chinese... Also, regarding Taiwan: an early CIA operation! Legit, the CIA thought they could get the KMT back into power on mainland China after they had already lost the civil war, so told them not to declare independence on Taiwan, just trust us, bro! LOL! Probably the most epic fail of any intelligence agency ever.

The whole "ask" vs. "kiss" thing is a lot better than kiku and kiku. Having "listen" and "ask" be the same word with the same kanji is far worse. What makes the kiku situation so much worse is that there's so many other words for ask that they could use to avoid the confusion... by noooooooooooooo, they got to use the one that's bound to inspire confusion.

I did say that :D
@denniscarr923411 сағат бұрын
the more I study chinese the less I understand what 了actually means or why you use it in certain phrases. it just is. stage 1: 了 marks past tense, just like 'ed' in english stage 2: 了 actually just marks a completed action stage 3: 了 actually refers to a change of state or is sometimes just thrown into a sentence because it sounds good stage 4: 了 means everything and nothing. it is a phantom character whose meaning has been lost to time, which flits in and out of the chinese language according to its own whims. stage 5: 了 means 了
