Portrait of the Artist as a young man : "-The soul is born, he said vaguely . . . It has a slow and dark birth, more mysterious than the birth of the body. When the soul of a man is born in this country there are nets flung at it to hold it back from flight. You talk to me of nationality, language, religion. I shall try to fly those nets. . . . Too deep for me, Stevie, he said. But a man's country comes first, Stevie. You can be a poet or a mystic after. -Do you know what Ireland is? asked Stephen with cold violence. Ireland is the old sow that eats her farrow. "

Lyrics : Are we the ones left behind by those who weave cords that bind? They draw the marrow from our very Bones and we in turn, turn on our own. Stood in line in horsehair shirts we queued up to eat the dirt, We traded lumps on narrow streets, Can't bite the hand when you've no teeth. And it's a standing ovation for the shadow of a stone As we dig into the soil beneath our homes. The future's further day-by-day as our fathers turn away And leave us clinging to a mother who eats her own. The granite gaze upon us now, a skulking mass recalling how To plant a secret and tell no lies For now we own those same stone eyes. And it's the last gasp of wonder for a cretin on a throne As our daughter's sneak away across the foam, The future's just a thing we say to keep the sordid past at bay Still we cling on to the mother who eats her own. We are the ones left behind in swaddling bound with bailing twine, They stole the marrow from our very Bones and we in turn, turned on our own.
This is beyond beauty, yet about such traumatic stuff . Her voice is amazing and so emotive it punches my soul . A wonderful sad tone in the low ranges she reaches . Sometimes her voice sounds like the harmonium she plays . ..Beautiful beyond words.

I had to read to read the lyrics online to completely understand them - and I was blown away. To my understanding this song is up there with "This Land is Your Land" by Woody Guthrie. It takes time, but history will agree. This song is about how we trust our leaders, who actually "draw the marrow from our very bone". But who do we blame? Each other. Neighbour against neighbour: we are mothers, who eat their own and the future is just a thing we say to keep our sordid past at bay. Divisive politics are rampant now. Did you notice that the "priest" (or maybe archbishop) in the video had the same starry eyes as the infant from space? Who trusted the first person it met on earth? Are we the ones left behind by those who weave cords that bind? They draw the marrow from our very bones and we in turn, turn on our own. Stood in line in horsehair shirts we queued up to eat the dirt, We traded lumps on narrow streets, can’t bite the hand when you’ve no teeth. And it’s a standing ovation for the shadow of a stone As we dig into the soil beneath our homes. The future’s further day-by-day as our fathers turn away And leave us clinging to a mother who eats her own. The granite gaze upon us now, a skulking mass recalling how To plant a secret and tell no lies for now we own those same stone eyes. And it’s the last gasp of wonder for a cretin on a throne As our daughter’s sneak away across the foam, The future’s just a thing we say to keep the sordid past at bay Still we cling on to the mother who eats her own. We are the ones left behind in swaddling bound with bailing twine, They stole the marrow from our very bones and we in turn, turned on our own.

I think this song is about the misogynistic and archaic hold the Catholic church has on Ireland, but I think it particularly is talking about the anti-abortion laws that exist in the country.
@richardharrowing57086 жыл бұрын
...in fact, in 5 days time there will be a referendum in Ireland to see if the 8th amendment (which covers abortion) should be repealed. So I think this is kind of a 'hot topic' in the country at the moment.
@tuomashelin5556 жыл бұрын
I agree. Poetic expression, such as song lyrics, are mostly ambiguous and leave a lot of room for interpretation. "Our daughters sneak away across the foam" quite clearly refers to Irish women leaving Ireland to get an abortion. However, I think this song will live on after it has shed its contemporary political references. It is simple in melody and structure, yet reveals the power within after a closer hearing. Cheers, Richard - and to the Irish people, who are shedding the baggage of catholic mysticism!

'This song is about how we trust our leaders, who actually "draw the marrow from our very bone". But who do we blame?' - ? I think it's about how we destroy everything and at the same time manage to convince ourselves that we're the victims in the equation.
