Great review. The Lanshan1 (2021) really fixed most of the short-comings you addressed with the older Lanshan1. They have increased the inside size by 20 cm, so height should no longer be an issue for taller people. They also added some venting mesh at the top of the fly for more airflow. Something I really like is that you can get 3-season and 4-season inner tents for it for around $65.

Cheers Ron. Yeah this video is a bit dated now. I'd recommend the Lanshan 2021 version now and probably over the SMD Lunar Solo too.

@@S-WS-lx2hm still difficult to gauge. The Lanshan hasn't had nearly as much use as the SMD Lunar Solo. The latter was beginning to look a little tired after nearly 30 nights out, which isn't a lot.
@kevinharding11812 жыл бұрын
I'm not using the Lanshan 1 but the 2P. However one major plus point for the SMD Lunar Solo (and the reason I'm buying another - Silpoly - tent in addition to the L2) is that it's Silpoly and not Silnylon. So, especially for UK weather, this is a huge benefit as not only will it not sag in heavy rain (because Poly doesn't absorb water whereas Nylon does, even with the DWR coating) but it won't retain water. I've read this can lead to an extra 500g weight when you pack up in the morning.
@WalkWithWallace2 жыл бұрын
Some valid points Kevin, I don't know what it was with the SMD but I didn't quite get on with it, and actually prefer the Lanshan 1P. The 2P gets a lot of plaudits. I suppose wet tents might become a problem on multi day trips with prolonged rain, but for 1 night it's not a big issue imho.
@kevinharding11812 жыл бұрын
@@WalkWithWallace Yes the extra trailweight (after a quick check) of 910g (L1) vs 1,220g (L2) was worth it to me for the extra space, double doors and 2 large vestibules. Pitch area is obviously larger but not an issue. Lots of mods that can be done to improve both Lanshans.

Great Review. I recently used a Lanshan 1 on the TMB. I bought it because it was an affordable (I paid about £75 on Aliexpresss), sub 1kg tent. I was a bit sceptical however after 8 nights in it I was very impressed with it and would certainly recommend it. For uk backpackers who are faced with extortionate import duties for US made gear the Lanshan is really worth serious consideration.

Hi, one Importen question is the condensation: The Luna solo has a good ventilation system, not only on the top, but there is a mesh line all around the walls to avoid condensation. How with Lanshan?
@kevinharding11812 жыл бұрын
Just an FYI - the import duties (DHL+Import Taxes+VAT) total around 25%. I recently bought some gear from the USA (US$300 with an extra £64 to HMC&E after delivery) and that's what I paid. Considering that most gear will be much cheaper in the USA than in the UK it's often worth the hassle if you want US made gear, as it will be cheaper than buying the same item here.

Great review, thanks. One point worth considering is that, if you live in North America the SMD has customer support and a real warranty, whereas the Lanshan bought on AliExpress will leave you on your own (or pay extremely high return shipping costs and have serious language barriers). In addition, the SMD is made from silicon coated POLYESTER (not nylon like the Lanshan) and won't sag when wet. If caught in a serious rain and wind storm, you can stay in the tent and ride it out (whereas with Lanshan you'll have to go out and stretch the tent).

Thanks Dano and some valid points there. I think the Lanshan is excellent if you're just starting out or on a tight budget. Makes lightweight backpacking more affordable. For long term ownership you'd want the SMD. The space in the SMD for a 1 man tent is excellent.

You can go on KZbin and watch many set up their new tent. You can then say " I love my new tent and it was a great value" but beyond that I sort of wish everyone would just quit posting general opinions that mean so little.Talk about the length . This is a shorter tent maybe made fr the average height Asian. If youre taller than maybe 6'1 buy a different tent. Thank you for this poster showing the width difference. Thank you poster for mentioning thickness of materials. If we didnt have to wade through all the "I love my tent" postings, maybe we would see a few true comparisons discussing different types of cloth used, advantages of each cloth. Zipper comparison, etc. BTW, there are hundreds if not thousands of people posting their grandma's apple pie recipe but very few great postings that attach the actual recipe list, that show tips and tricks that have worked for them. Negative results that havent worked for them. Great editing that shows you all you need to know in a 3 min video compared to a 30 min video with no editing that spends 1 min showing me how to measure both cups of flour. You Tube has now been in existence long enough that many posting duplications force us to spend way too much time sorting through postings when so many are half assed attempts by many just wanting to create a posting without using any rhyme or reason. Can you just imagine how many apple pie recipes we will have to sort through 20 yrs from now?. Its so bad now that many just go to a pie recipe, literally copy/paste, (including the same spelling and grammar mistake)

Support the brand that put in the work. This is a small time company (SMD). Don't support the knock off. To me, it's just that simple. If the Lunar Solo did not exist, nor would the Creed 1...or companies like Lanshan. So why support a company who does not give back to the community through innovation and passion. Lanshan give's back (lower cost) by taking away (undercutting the innovators that are true to the scene)...

The multiple panel design on the Lanshan is the reason why it has a better pitch than the Lunar Solo. I have one of the early ones when what and yellow were the only choices and you had to seal the mid panel pullouts yourself. It's been a great tent. But you really have to use the pullouts on the side panels to give yourself enough room. The new Lanshan pro version is very tempting. The only negative thing I can say is that Ron Bell demonstrated that the material used in the Lanshan is fairly weak and the rip stop grid nearly superficial. But I've been very impressed with the function and design otherwise.
@WalkWithWallace5 жыл бұрын
I seen that video comparing the materials, even the HH was poor in comparison to their silnylon. You get what you pay for at the end of the day, they won't last forever, but they're still decent enough if you're starting out or on a cheap budget.
@wisenber2 жыл бұрын
"The multiple panel design on the Lanshan is the reason why it has a better pitch than the Lunar Solo." Actualy, it is because he put the front guyline over the vestibule instead of under it. The Lunar Solo pitches fine if you do that.

The new Luna Solo is Silpoly and not silnylon. The silpoly does not stretch as much after it's set up. It also does not absorb moisture like the silnylon does so your tent would stay dryer ( Lighter ) and easier to dry before packing it.

3F UL have since brought out the larger Lanshan that's the same size as the 1 Pro but with an inner. I prefer it to the SMD Lunar Solo.
@driewiel5 жыл бұрын
The biggest difference is that the Lanshan is double wall! Yes you have less space. But you won't be up all night because the condensation drips off on your face with every gust of wind with a wet sleeping bag. I can't believe you didn't mention that.
@WalkWithWallace5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. Can you say a mesh inner is a double wall? Plus if there's a breeze you don't tend to get condensation in the Lunar Solo. Still nights can be an issue though. Carry a J-cloth for wiping off condensation.
@driewiel5 жыл бұрын
@@WalkWithWallace Well yes mesh is also double wall. It stops you from touching the wet fly with your sleeping bag or head or arms. Downside of a double wall is less space. Although you really need the extra space in a single wall tent so you don't touch the condensation. And I have seen a couple of videos by people with a Lunar Solo who didn't sleep that well because of droplets falling on their face. Wet inside, rain on top, Chinese torture. I'm not saying it is always that bad. But me personally I rather carry the extra 200 grams (or so?) for a full inner tent even if I would be hiking. On my bicycle, or recumbent trike, I often carry two outer outer and 1 inner tent so I can choose. Nice thing about teepee inners is that you can combine them with really spacious outer tarps. But that's another story.
@driewiel5 жыл бұрын
@@WalkWithWallace And I can understand why people love their Cuban fiber single wall tents. When it rains it almost looks as if there is nothing between you and the elements. Quite thrilling if you know what I mean. Plus Cuban fiber you can shake dry in the morning. Water weighs a lot! Reason why I use a cut to size fleece picnic blanket for the vestibule. Super comfy, I don't lose stuff, and my gear is nice and dry. The 200 grams only saves me some clothes and socks. Then again, I bike with e-assist. So I can afford a little bit of luxury. On a mtb crossing harsh terrain it would be minimalist too. But single wall, never. Last time single wall (granted, very cheap tent) couple of years back I cried it would be the last camping trip. Then I gave it another go with a new tent. Now I'm fan again. If only it had a bathroom.
@WalkWithWallace5 жыл бұрын
@@driewiel yeah Cuban fibre looks good, never tried one yet as the prices are eye watering. I suppose the it depends where you're camping. I'm usually up on the mountains and never had any problems with single skin shelters. The Lunar Solo does have good ventilation. I use tyvek sometimes for placing at the vestibule.

@@WalkWithWallace I paid € 56,92 for my white Lanshan 1. Can't complain. Hexpeak 4VA is a nice tent too. At €180 already more than I normally spend on gear. I always wanted one after seeing a one person teepee with half inner 40 years ago on my first bike tour. That was actually a 4 kilo cotton Erdman Schmidt costing 400 guilders. A fortune in those days. In the Netherlands teepee tents are rare. No idea why? But had I bought the Lanshan first I don't think I would have ordered the Hexpeak. Yes it is smaller. But kinda like that. After the cheap single wall disaster I got a Grand Canyon Cardova 1. Newer used it! And after that the pretty good older model 3F UL in orange. But as for weight and design the Lanshan wins. I'm only 1.75 so large enough for me. I can really recommend it unless you are tall. And if a tent is really light you can carry an extra 3F UL tarp/poncho which can act as a ground sheet at the same time. Or you get a large tarp and combine that with the Lanshan inner if you think you are going to spend much time in the rain. Nothing more fun than a huge fabric home listening to the rain waiting and waiting. I do have to say, I love rain during the night. Especially when someone else's tent is leaking like hell!

Thanks for your review. I don't believe that the Lansham is more waterproof with flimsier materials....Their claim doesn't make any sense. The SMD has better quality materials, better construction, weighs 7 oz less (as per your scale) and has more room inside for the larger males in the crowd. The side guylines give it even more head/foot space for the extra tall. Not to mention you can work with the vendor if there are any warranty/quality issues. SMD remade this tent with the heavier material (20D top, 40D bottom) adding back a couple of ounces for an increased longevity. A lot of original thought was put into this tent's design, which the Lansham copied in a cheaper fashion. You get what you pay for. But this 'Cheaper Chinese' merchandise as it has been known for many years has gotten better to the point of being a middle of the road quality product, say better than anything you would find as a Walmart Brand here in the States. Having said that, the Lansham may be a great option if the following 2 criteria are met: 1) You are on a tighter budget. For the price, there is nothing else like it for sure. Period. 2) You are on the shorter end (child, teen, average female, shorter male). The average American Male sleeping on a 2.5 pad and a quilt on top will wake up on the Lansham with their feet wet from touching the foot end with their quilt.
