@@m.a.c1379 I walked up 29% gradient, rode 25.5% on bicycle, walking it's not that hard. Going on bike killed me in the middle of climb on this incline. You need 300+ watts to move 4-5 km/h.

Thanks Pat for this excellent overview. On the issue of Roglic its clear he is not at the level has has been at in the past and IMO I don't think he has recovered fully from the back injury sustained on stage 6 of the TDF. If you watch him when he is off the bike - he is stiff with a slightly hunched posture.

Great tactics by Meintjes, going for the breakaway win the day before a rest day. The breakwaway tactic works so much better for him than the follow-the-GC leaders tactic. First Alpe D'Huez, now this, fantastic! Loving this new aggressive riding from him! An epic stage win like this is long overdue, he fully deserves it. From a proud South African 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦

I think it’s just his way of climbing. In Norway he played a bit of the cat and mouse game with Vine and another rider but then went for his own steady cadence and dropped in. I’m glad there are riders with different styles

I really wonder if Remco will crack this vuelta as he never finished a grand tour yet. If he doesn't, this vuelta is over. If he does, it will be very very interesting if Roglic can get some time in the ITT on all the other gc contenders

he can still lose everything in sierra nevada, guadarrama or even peñas blancas or pandera. remember, some leaders have looked unbeatable in the past, going for every stage, and ended up paying very dearly for it

@@matthiasehling6763 roglic almost blew it in 2020 as well, dumoulin lost in 2015 and almost in 2017, kruijswijk crashed off the maglia rosa in 2016 and froome lost la vuelta that year because nairo got in the head of the race at formigal thanks to contador. lots of things can happen

The only pronunciation I've heard in South Africa is much closer to "main keess", the emphasis on the first syllable, short second syllable. But different Afrikaans communities might say the 'tj' differently.

Remco never got out of the saddle, even on the sections >20%. There's no reason to think he can't handle steep climbs when he's looking as lean as he looks right now. I'd say the only question left is his consistency.

A couple of years ago I'd have said that consistency only comes with experience / years... then Pogocar happened. As a proper Dutch guy I still have to admit he's looking in excellent shape so far. But a grand tour is 3 weeks.

The question is not the steepness but the length. How will he handle proper mountain stages. The fact that he never finished a 3 week tour is something his opponents will challenge him on in the later stages

yates at 2018 giro was looking incredibly dominant and then blew up. if a team - uae or ineos stand the best chance - can put remco into the red late in the race, it could blow things wide open still also seems possible for someone to do a ben o'connor tdf '21, win from the break and move way up on gc. maybe even ben o'connor himself, tho gino mader seems to be sitting at the perfect spot for that

this wasn't a bad day though for Roglic. Remco did this climb at record speed. Every loss between around 20-40 seconds by his competitors, is a stellar performance. In case of Roglic, losing 50 seconds indicates a good result. Maybe Roglic could do better, but it's not exactly cracking.

It's not the same P/kg on steep climbs: Slightly different muscle groups get used ( Evenepoel trained on this, also got more muscular in general, weighs 2 kg more then giro last year) so it's not the same Power as on flat/less steep climbs,thus not the same P/kg.

Please be more specific. What's the difference exactly in terms of muscle groups? w/kg is w/kg. You have a slightly lower natural cadence on the hills, however, this is mostly down to individual preference and bike fit, and if you have the gearing you can spin the whole way as plenty of cyclists have done in the past. I mostly prefer shorter efforts at a higher cadence, but I ride a few hills and my body gets used to lower cadences astonishingly quickly.

Evenepoel gives the lie to needing to start young as a bike racer, he has a huge motor, end of story, it's a strange sport, amazing motors and amazing downhill crashes........because most of these late bloomers can't descend. How often do you see Sagan or Allaphillipe crash on descents, relatively rare. Think of sports like swimming, golf, soccer, tennis, you start late, you NEVER make it as a pro. Still glad to see such good young talent, it's probably a golden age of cycling with Bernal, Pogecar, Evenepoel, Ayuso, etc. Just beasts (with most except Pogecar having huge, terrible crashes)

Notice how his acceleration has dropped off? He went all in on steep Mountain passes. He trained on a 12km 10.5 percent mountain.

Well first of all this is Remco's first grand tour with a decent preparation, for the Giro last year he should have never been allowed to start. Secondly, it's still 2 weeks but the haters who would like to see him crack, I don't think he will based on his preparation. He's got a really good solid base and should be able to sustain this. But yeah it's still long and the biggest tests are yet to come. I see Ayuso as potentially the biggest threat, Roglic will probably crack based on his limited preparation for the Vuelta
