What a first stage this was; the fans (although in some places they were severely restricting the width of the road which made it impossible to overtake on the climb in those areas), the terrain, the series of climbs and descents, winding through the small towns of this majestic part of Spain known as Euskadi (Basque Country), the weather, the views, the discipline and concentration in the peloton, the big teams, the individual brilliance of many riders, the road surface and absence of dangerous road furnuture (for the most part at least) - all made for an unbelievable start to the tour. Such a pity to lose Enric Mas and Richard Carapaz though, I hope they recover well. Pogacar showing he's going to put the pressure on already, which was expected anyway. The icing on the cake was the brilliant final 5k pull away and finish by the Yates twins, Adam and Simon. How can anyone not be a fan of the TdF for life after this mouth-watering opening stage?
That Yates guy and the other Yates guy worked really well together... almost looked like they were in sync and fully trusted each other... how?

Adam being "co-captain" is just tactically for the media, as he said in interview after the stage win "its all in for pogi the next three weeks" Jonas should, as for now, keep an eye for pogi. If Adam is still in top three in week two he defo should keep an eye on him, but for now jumbo can sit in the shadow and wait for the best moment to attack the yellow. Going to be exciting to see what Skjelmose brings as well after Tour de Swiss, Tom pidcock as well in the mountains, the netflix series really brought that in so good. See you tomorrow

Last week I wondered about the poetic justice that might occur if UAE put the pincher movement on Jumbo in a reversal of last year. And it has already happened ! It was not particularly impactful, but the longer Yates stays in GC contention, the more likely it is to happen again - and with much greater consequences. Jumbo not bringing Roglic might really cost them here.

Great team tactics by UAE. Yates attacks, Jonas can not follow because he has always pogi on his wheel. So Pogi and Jonas neutralize each other a bit. And so Yates can probably attack several times during this TDF and gain time. And if there is no attack, Pogi can always win bonus seconds.. so Jonas will have to crush Pogi on a difficult stage to win the tour ( like he did last year )
