I started surfing ( stand up) in 1970 and continued till the wheels fell off around 2015. The first couple of years with no leash or wetsuit. Body surfing and swimming were essential skills.

Everest style manhood. In December 1980 I sat on the beach at Pipeline and watched the "World Bodysurfing Championships". It was very big, very messy and the beach shuddered with every wave. But that was kindergarten compared to this effort! Most people can get out off the rocks, it's getting back in that matters.

Utterly glorious. No other words properly describe this. This is me 35 years ago, I miss it badly. It skipped the part I was most interested in, which is coming ashore without getting dinged or shredded. Deep water at the edge of shore is just an elevator ride up and down for the most part and not dangerous if you know what you are doing. The worst kind of shore is gently sloping boulders and ledge or a shallow shelf above deeper water - you get dragged back and forth and get the life pounded out of you.

Anybody want to hear about the ride of a lifetime I got on the south shore of Kauaii in 1992. Conditions as big as this. Began with 100 yards of open face flying. Next was a full pike flip up to a swan dive re-entry after the backwash wave explosion. It works very nicely if you let the backwash wave pass right up through your waist and 'fold' around it as it throws you up 10 or 15 feet, at least. After miraculously landing back on the wave, I had 40 yards of deep, screaming fast tube. Now the best part, a super tight and fast flip in the 8 foot shorebreak, landing on one foot because I was already running to escape, with dry hair, before the wave I just rode from way 'outside' crushed me. For those of you pointing out that you could never outrun a big beach break running in flippers, I wasn't wearing any. Don't believe me, ask the local surfers who saw it. I bet they still remember. I'll never forget and I never neglect to thank whichever Goddess of the sea that gave me that ride. Thank you, Highness.
