I started surfing ( stand up) in 1970 and continued till the wheels fell off around 2015. The first couple of years with no leash or wetsuit. Body surfing and swimming were essential skills.

@@colonia8Love the Algarve. Travelled through southern Portugal in 1992 after getting out of the United States Air Force. First time i ever saw large waves in Europe was there. I told my friends way back in 1993 Portugal had big waves. Now everyone on the planet knows.

Everest style manhood. In December 1980 I sat on the beach at Pipeline and watched the "World Bodysurfing Championships". It was very big, very messy and the beach shuddered with every wave. But that was kindergarten compared to this effort! Most people can get out off the rocks, it's getting back in that matters.

Utterly glorious. No other words properly describe this. This is me 35 years ago, I miss it badly. It skipped the part I was most interested in, which is coming ashore without getting dinged or shredded. Deep water at the edge of shore is just an elevator ride up and down for the most part and not dangerous if you know what you are doing. The worst kind of shore is gently sloping boulders and ledge or a shallow shelf above deeper water - you get dragged back and forth and get the life pounded out of you.
