Thank you for this excellent analysis. So many themes with contemporary relevance. Just one: the heavy price of pronouncing the truth. So many others. Such a beautiful representation.

Thanks so much for sharing. I remember so vividly when I saw this sculptural piece at the Vatican. When you take Cassandra, who spoke the truth, but no one listened, and Helenus, who also prophesied that Troy would fall, and then poor Laocoön, who was a priest of Apollo, one begins to have sympathy for the human side of the Trojan side of the story.

As usual, expressed brilliantly. Rightly said about the warnings, with two divergent views one Greek and one Roman. The Greeks did like their warnings didn't they, IE the Caryatids. The two diagonals moving from lower right to the upper left are referred to as the sinister movement. That movement creates a sense of unease. While the one movement from lower left to upper right is referred to, as the Baroque diagonal relaxes the eye somewhat bringing the viewer back to the center of the composition. As expressed at 6:10. Good point on the chaos! I believe Laocoon screams of agony were not heard. Good job identifying it as a sculptural group, with serpentine movements!

Fascinating - thank you. I had been aware of this sculpture but knew neither the story behind it nor its history. I was looking up Laocoon, having seen painting by El Greco at Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest last week.

Wow!! I've become a huge fan of yours and of your videos!! Thanks! Like all allegories, the "story" must be interpreted by the individual, who then learns more about themself by "figuring out" the problem. One other interpretation could be the painful fate of those who tell the truth (like Cassandra); another might be the anger of God against what is said by the Established Church (Laocoön was a priest)-just joking (or am I? It's up to the individual to think about it)!!

Thank you as always for your work Miss. What struck me about the statue was a seeming contrast between strength and weakness. The main character was clearly powerful and solid in contrast to the figures of his sons which looked (to your uneducted viewer here) as if they could almost be easily snapped from the statue and away from their struggling father. I suppose the snakes could be seen as smaller in size yet powerful in their potentially destructive force so a combination of the elements. I shall be extra careful to avoid upsetting the gods you discussed! Blessings and peace

Why is it not true, that is not made, from a single piece of marble? Don't the the outer pieces that have broken off, when it was buried, prove that it was one piece? A look at the inner parts to see whether it is hollow would be a place to look. Why is it important to point out that it not be one piece of stone? Because it is... and maybe, if someone knew that it was, they would try to do the same thing. Except they would realize that the figure is already IN THE STONE. That it would just need to be polished for 30 years to get it done. The can of worms that would open up would prove what a fraud THE POWERS THAT BE... are.
