I think if I buy any more macro gear my wife will kill me. Also waiting for the yen to gain some value before buying anything priced in USD. Very painful right now. I did just pick up a Tamron 90/2.8 172E in EF mount for $45 here in Japan. I have a metabones EF to E adapter and am curious how well it will perform. Have some watches to photograph and sell, AF is very helpful for that...

I've been considering this lens, but I think your video has convinced me that I have a lot to learn about macro before attempting to use something like this. Thanks!

I'm new to insect photography but going to jump into the deep end and get this lens straightaway... I've got plenty of time and passion to learn to use it
@IanHobday Жыл бұрын
@@Chris1878e You won't enjoy the learning curve. Go with the 85/5.6 2:1 macro instead, it's a lot easier to use and learn with.

Excellent tutorial and nice that you made the audience aware of what is needed to be successful when using it. I have the lens and am getting nice results but was unaware of the decline in sharpness at higher magnification. This lens requires NUMEROUS shots for stacking even a small fly. It's really good for getting an image of an insect's eye. The actual working distance for this lens, as stated by Laowa is: 40 mm (5x) - 45 mm (2.5x)

Laowa makes some really cool stuff. I have their 85/5.6 2X, 100/2.8 2X, and 15/4 1:1 macro lenses, all are excellent. I also have their 105/2 Bokeh Dreamer which is a fun lens that I want to use more. While I don't need AF for macro, some of their other lenses would be even better with AF and camera communication. They'll be a formidable competitor when they do move into AF lenses!

I agree, they make some pretty awesome stuff

How do you focus then?.. Is there a focus ring? Or are YOU the focus, moving as necessary?
@StefanMalloch Жыл бұрын
Yes there is no focus ring. Its a fixed working distance. You move the lens to focus.

Great review and tips! I own a Laowa 65mm f2.8 1:1 for my Sony a6500 and Sony 90mm F2.8 1:1 for my Sony a7c full frame. Both are great in their own way. I bought the Laowa 25mm before seeing your review but haven’t received it yet. question: do you have a tutorial/course on effective aperture in high macro? Also, since I was young I feel there is a disappearance, perhaps an extinction of insects in urban environments. What’s your take on this?

Hey Stefan, is there a way to get this lens to work on the Fuji X-System (APS-C) ?

Just a thought, you would probably do well to sign up with Laowa as an affiliate! I think they pay pretty well, and they offer free shipping globally. I've bought all my Laowa lenses directly from their online shop. I think they provide review samples to some other channels so you might be able to get some more gear to review, too.

Would you recommend me pick Lawoa 2:1 90 mm or 100 mm? Just asking about sharpness. I know, I will need 2x macro so I don't want to waste double amount of money and just keep one lens. I need to say I want to go into product photography in the end of the year.

I find it super annoying when people like this guy try to stop beginners from getting good equipment. I'm so glad I stopped listening to this kind of "advice," and wasting money buying "beginner" equipment, only to be frustrated/disappointed with its limitations several months down the line, and then spending MORE money buying equipment I should have bought at the very beginning. It's fine to let people know if something is difficult to work with, but stop saying, "don't buy this if you're a beginner".
