Dustin, sorry about your father. Thank you for all your reviews; I've watched so many of them, and they're the hands down the best and most helpful! I've been in the market for something just like this lens particularly for photographing paintings. The 90mm and 100mm are too long for larger paintings, so I've been needing something more in this range. I was about to pull the trigger on the Zeiss Milvus 2/50 macro and an RF adapter, but now there's this at well under half the price. You might be the only person who has shot both lenses! If you happen to have any thoughts on how they compare for color, contrast, and distortion, I'd be most grateful to hear them! Thanks again for all you do.
@DustinAbbottTWI2 жыл бұрын
I think I might go Laowa for two reasons - much higher magnification levels and much lower price.

I'm sorry for your loss Dustin. Love your reviews, they are the best in my opinion. Q: Is the recently reviewed 90mm version of it comparable from its image quality and performance, and choosing which one is only based on focal lenghth preference? Wondering about your opinion on that. Thank you!

Thank you for your condolences. To answer your question, I think you can really make your determination based on what focal length you prefer, as performance is largely similar

All the best to you Dustin. Very well done review, thank you. Beautiful images! This lens appeals to me. Versatile and a nice focal length. The weight and volume is greater than I might have fancied ( ignoring the realities of physics) but that downside might be cancelled out or lessened if this could be the only lens I need take.

@@DustinAbbottTWI I just bought one, the size and weight make it a really useful lens for macro, not versatile really just a macro lens. I have not missed the wider apertures for macro work, of course, I have 2 2.8 macros if I need them. The build and quality match my other laowa lenses I would recommend it.

Hey Dustin, great review. I’m currently enjoying the Laowa 100mm on my Sony a7r3. I often shoot wide open at 2.8 to get big bokeh balls in my background. Would the bokeh balls be smaller with 58mm? (Close ups of butterflies and dragonflies). Cheers from Toronto
@DustinAbbottTWI2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. At close magnification, the bokeh will be similar. A little further away, however, and they will be smaller.

How will you rate the Laowa 58mm 2.8 APO compared to the Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar (from 0.5x to infinity) ?
@DustinAbbottTWI2 жыл бұрын
I still think the Voigtlander colors are a little more special, but in many metrics they would be similar

@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you. I have the Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 65mm 2.0 and I love it, I use it for all kinds of photography. I wish that all Macro Lenses had recessed front element, I do not like macro Lenses with the front element at the edge of the front.

Once again an excellent video, thanks Dustin. Bless you brother as I know what you go through as I lost my father and mother within 4 months apart from each other too not too long ago....thus, to have the assurance to where they are now is very comforting....keep the good work up as we all enjoy your video a LOT! A question: How do you compare the Laowa 58 or 90 F2.8 with the Samyang 100mm F2.8 Macro in regard to quality etc.? I am asking as I use the Samyang 100mm F2.8 macro with my Sony a6500. Would appreciate your feedback and insight. ONE more question: Do you ever tried IR photography? I would love to hear from you what your experience is in this regard?

Well the Sony isn't apo and only does half magnification. So this Laowa although without electronics internally, is a better lens overall in comparison to the Sony 50mm macro

is it news that this is a third party on RF? or perhaps a shortlived option before an inevitable cease and desist?
@Princeton_James2 жыл бұрын
Haven't they had other 3rd party manual without issues? I think Canon doesn't like AF lenses competing. Not sure...just a thought.
@robgerety2 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that Canon is stopping automatic lenses that have electronic connections to the body, not fully manual lenses. I assume we would not see the various Laowa macro lenses otherwise.

Sorry Dustin but we buy 1:1 and 2:1 macro lenses and tubes etc. to accurately reproduce flat field subject like coins, postage stamps, 35mm slide copies and other semi microscopic subjects. The only 'close up shots' you briefly showed were unsharp at the edges, vignetted and flawed in many other ways but you passed over them without any significant comment! What have landscape shots and bokeh have anything relevant to contribute to high magnification macro projects that you would need such a lens for? For that you would just buy a basic 50mm f/2 and get auto-focus included within the same price range!
@DustinAbbottTWI2 жыл бұрын
Are you sure you actually watched the review? I show close ups of both bills and coins here. The Laowa APO lenses have some of the best reproduction of any macro lenses I’ve used
@dummatube2 жыл бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI Yes I had another look. The 2:1 true macro shots of the printed text show poor flat field correction (which you DO mention - my apologies). This would make the copying of things like stamps, film slides and negatives impossible. We use an old AI-S 55mm Micro-Nikkor and a PK tube with a Nikon to Fuji non optical Metabones adapter and we get perfectly sharp flat field images up to, and higher than, 1:1 magnification at f/8 and f/11 on APS-C before the effects of diffraction appears.
