Hi Keith, Thanks for the memories bro, lol. You reminded me of a job I did 20 years ago, that I would have preferred to forget. I was tasked with making 10 6" tapered muff couplings for line shafts on a submersible pump, man those suckers weighted about 100lbs each and I had to lap them by hand ( we didn't have a lathe long enough to let me rotate the shafts). I went through a whole tin of Engineers blue, a bucket load of lapping paste and a whole box of band-aids for the blisters. Nightmare job, but hey I gotter done. lol

Keith, thank you very much for the re-post, I enjoyed it the first time and even more this time. It shows me why I watch your channel. Your work ethic and quality of work is second to none, so much so even a peer comments like Brian below. Love his channel to.

Thanks for illustrating the process, bluing is the home shop's cost effective CMM (coordinate measuring machine). Certainly micrometers and indicators will get you close but 'bluing the surface' gives you a visual check for the least amount of effort and cost. More in the community should provide a photo of the bluing contact pattern in their video after finishing machining the workpiece. We always blued our tool steel injection mold parting lines before sending them to the metrology lab for inspection after final assembly.

Very nice, by trade I'm a dental tech and that's the same way to fit implants and cast gold comings you're doing it on a larger scale but your level of fit is great. Used to work in a machine shop when I was 16 caught the bug for precision there. God bless you and your family aloha

Great video, one note about the prop. nuts, if the boat is coast guard inspected then the small nut must go on first! I put the big nut on first on any other boat. Some times the rake of the blade on some of the exotic wheels we do makes it harder for the wrench to reach if you use the small nut first, when I questioned the coast guard about the small nut first thing, they told me that it was to prevent the wheel from being overtightened. I think that answer is complete B.S. but that is what they want. I like the big nut first.

I learn something with each of your videos. PS Stuff like this is much better than watching you weld aluminum fuel tanks. 👍

Very informative especialy liked the bit "The taper drives the wheel". I supose its like a properly designed bolted joint the load is carried by the friction between the clamped plates, the bolts only carry a shear load if the joint comes loose.

Great video thanks for posting. One quick question as I'm lapping a 2blade onto a 7/8th shaft (new shaft old prop). When I push the prop on by hand I see the key base and bottom of the taper about 1/8th deep in the prop. I'm just curious what the "warning" level is so I don't lap so far that I can't tighten the prop? I guess I'm just wondering if when tightening the nut the prop will squeeze up the shaft an eight and I should stop now or if the prop won't hardly slide up at all when torqued. I hope that made sense!

Anyone who has ever watched your videos, and needs a shaft/propeller repair, would want you repairing theirs. If a man will do the best he can, every time, he will always have work and repeat customers

Nice prop lapping technique. The main nut first and then the locking nut, every time. I have to differ in heating the prop to get a shrink fit on the shaft as the amount of damage that may be done to the prop and the shaft when next removed will probably be very expensive. Or is that a job creation scheme?.
