#LaparoscopicColectomy #ColonSurgery #LargeIntestine
A colectomy is usually done to treat diseases that inflame your colon, a bowel obstruction, colon cancer, or a damaged or injured colon. The anatomy of the colon, and the laparoscopic procedure done to remove a portion of the colon, are depicted.

My husband had this exact emergency operation last night. His colon was blocked, perforated and leaking. He was probably 36 hours from going septic and dying. He’s doing fine. Not thrilled to have a colostomy bag, but it will be reconnected in 6 months. And he’s really glad he’s not dead!

I just went through this procedure with colostomy on Feb 10th. I get mine reversed on May 4th. Praying he is feeling better and his hopes are high. I'm going through a bit of depression and financial hardships because of this. Pray he is staying strong

I had one in September 2021 due to a cancerous tumor pushing my colon shut. My intestines were close to busting. I have stage 3 ovarian cancer and my main md said this might happen. They removed 14 lbs of poop that was a hard as concrete. I am not a fan of my bag, but I wanna live.

I had sigmoid volvulus. My colon was twisted like a pretzel ! The pain was so severe I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy. I was going to die had I not went to the ER ! I had two colonoscopies. They took out a foot of my colon... my surgery was successful. No colostomy, which I was concerned about, my colon was reconnected. Only 4 weeks into my recovery 🙏🏽 I'm feeling much better and healing. I had an amazing surgeon and healthcare team ! They saved my life.

@@davidoladapo8339They vary. You won't know without imaging with an MRI etc. They're typical IBS symptoms, bloating, constipation, pain, nausea, vomitting, changes in stool shape, runny tummy. It's only in emergencies and you're rushed to the emergency room. I thought I was having a heart attack, but my vitals were still fine. I did look probably 4/5 months pregnant. The primary physician actually accused me if hiding my "pregnancy" from my mom, but she referred me to a specialist that evening. They ran imaging tests the next day and that's when they saw I had a sigmoid volvulous. That was followed by 2 endoscopic procedures and then the surgery.

Proper medication, staying active, and having good ppl around you for support is what helped me. Any major surgery like that is a long road to recovery and follow-ups with your doctor is important. If your gastrointestinal physician recommends a partial colectomie for diverticulitis, have the surgery performed as soon as possible. This will greatly reduce the chances of you needing to wear a colostomy bag. This may also save your life, by removing the damaged section of colon before you experience a life threatening bowel blockage, potentially lethal infection, catastrophic rupture of the colon, necrosis and gangrene of the colon, and many other potentially fatal complications.

I still take some anti inflammatory meds and infusions every now and then for the little bit of inflammation I have to keep the bleeding under control which has gotten better since I started on the meds (they had to keep my rectum to make the connection work, as I’m a tall guy at 6ft 5). At the beginning I had around 4-5 bowel movements a day but now I’m down to around 2-3. Ever having to have a surgery like this is one of my biggest fears in life

I was supposed to undergo the procedure today but had to postpone it because I started feeling sick yesterday probably out of fear of getting it done so now I have to meet with or call my surgeon to reschedule the whole procedure.

So important to eat high fibre foods and avoid added sugars, refined carbohydrates and processed meats. Eat red meat in low amounts. 7 servings of fruit and vegetables a day have been shown to reduce all-cause mortality by 34%.

Are there any other medical procedures for these kind of problems? Because colostomy or colectomy would cause body to not absorb or absorb very less amount of nutrients and water content from food. This would lead to even more diseases and cause the patient to suffer even more from deficiency diseases or any other.

in this phase of the digestion, most nutrients are already absorbed, it's mainly water by that time. the removal or a small section doesn't really impact the patient.

@@voice5sur5 thanks for the clarification. I think patient would get loose stools after this surgery and the would have to drink more amount of water daily (relatively). Right?

The small intestine is responsible for absorption of nutrients. There are some problems regarding bowel movements and surgeons usually accommodate that by creating a pouch in the region for collecting faeces and attaching that to anus

Hope your surgery went well. I have had stage III colon cancer three times since 2014, with a colostomy bag each time. The first two were reversed and colon reconnected, but i have a bag now. If you can't eventually have the bag removed, don't give up, you can lead a normal life, stay positive ! I'm still here 9 years after my initial diagnosis.
