Great review! Actually found this near me for $65 US, wishing I had bought two. For the water stuff, it's actually a traditional master blender technique where they take samples of their whiskeys and water it down into the 20% ABV ballpark so they can volatize and find all the notes on the nose and aren't surprised to find things they didn't want once they've blended several things together. 1:2 ratio puts it at about 25% ABV.

Nice review. Picked up a bottle of this at the distillery last month. They also recommend adding twice as much water as whisky to the 10 year old cask strength. I prefer that bruiser neat!

"Jerry-me" here. Fantastic episode on this one. I love your in-depth analysis and recommendations, your channel is moving way up on my list of vlogs to view. Impressed that you get right to the point and don't linger on for the sake of a longer video. Thanks for taking your precious time to flesh this one out. Trying to ease into some peated whiskies so I'll be watching for your future reviews and recommendations as well. Cheers All!

The only medicinal note I found in this one was on the neck-pour, and it appeared related to the high-proof bourbon casking rather than the peat. IMO this whiskey's smoke is tobacco and campfire, but I have a bottle atm and I don't find the peat to be that powerful at all. If anything defines it it is the sherry. What people who've never drank peated whiskey(bourbon drinkers) always complain about is "medicinal" character of peat, I'd say drink more peated whiskeys or just scotch in general and coming back to this one, it's good!

79 for the triple wood...ouch. I agree it’s not great though. I really enjoyed the first third of the bottle, but started to enjoy it less and less the more the bottle went down. Seemed to lose a lot of the sweeter notes and just ended up being oak and peat. I like Laphroaig but tend to lean more to Ardbeg these days. Great review

Thanks. Yeah, that dry bitter oak note really doesn't sit well with me. I like the 10 and 1/4 cask, but triple wood isn't my favorite.

I have no idea why they say to put that much water in, I've done 50/50 myself out of curiosity and while it's still better than the basic 40% Laphroaig, unless you're trying to stretch the bottle to it's max it's a waste of time. Personally my favourite way to drink Laphroaig is always cask strength, either neat or with a teaspoon or two of water and just enjoy really small sips. Without water a small sip turns into pure molten honey on the tongue after a little while, heaven.

Great review as always, Jeremy. I'll echo the statements by you and others that Laphroaig's 2:1 recommendation makes absolutely no sense. Essentially they're saying to take the 51.4% Càirdeas and dilute it to 17.13% ABV. Even 1:1 would drop it to 25.7%. My 9-year-old cousin won't even drink whisky with that low an ABV.
