When you compare Jedi Rocks to this, it's obvious what Lucas wanted. In this song, Lapti Nek, you can see it's like a space strip club, that this is all a nasty filthy place for Jabba's desires, and that girl dancing knows she's going to die, but in Jedi Rocks they make it look like some kind of fun happy place you'd bring your kid to to hear some entertaining music, and the slave girl dies abruptly almost by mistake. The reactions of people seeing Jabba kill her are mostly cut out, and even the bizarre lipped frog alien singer woman says "oops" as if it was an accident. Completely butchers the purpose of the scene, to let you know Jabba is a depraved sick druglord of space.

+Rory McCoy You are so cynical. I agree, Greedo is a terrible shot. Why would he do that..... But Lucas was the guy who created Star Wars, so unless you are the best filmmaker in the history of ever, be quiet.

+Jackson Jones you dont have to be a five star chef to decide if a meal tastes like shit so you dont have to be the "best film-maker in history" to decide if adding in shitty CGI into movies makes them worse. Sure he created Star Wars but as far as script-writing, creature design, effects design, the action direction, the score everything that makes a film a film he had almost nothing to do with. I know without Lucas we wouldnt have Star Wars at all, and I respect that, but a talented film-maker he is not.

Rory McCoy Yeah, nobody wants a nice steak if you've smeared mayonnaise and peanut butter on it. Star Wars was a nice steak, and then Lucas dumped his mayo on it.

Even so, my father, when he saw this for the first time as an early teen, didn't like this song at all, and I can see why he'd find it a bit out of place. Why did the creators then have to go and turn this scene from insult to injury with the re-edit 16 years later?

Well, although it’s not the same one and although he’s not screaming in you face at timestamp 0:46 you can actually see this weird black thing under Oola’s arm next to a row of three lights. By watching a more remaster version (preferably the 4K edition of the new Jedi rock scene if you want to subject yourself to that) you can actually see it’s the same creature so to a degree, WE COULDN'T EVEN GET THAT??!?!?!?! Bastard. Fun fact: the character in this scene is an exterminator.

DAMN this version is really unsettling at the end with the trap door. I grew up with the new version but I think it's better actually how you originally never saw what was in the trap door. It kept it way more eerie. And of course the music is way better in this one. Here the music blends in nicely and enhances the atmosphere while in the new version, it's way too in your face and taking away from the scene.

It's really sad how the puppets from 1983 hold up better than the CGI done in 1997 and 2004. And no, that does not mean all CGI is terrible.
@TheXboxReviewer
@TheXboxReviewer 7 жыл бұрын
The Rebo band looks fine, but that lead singer looks god awful as a puppet. The CGI is dated, but even so, it looks better than this. CGI isn't always better, but this is a great example of when an update was a smart move. Not to mention the song is better in the remaster, but that's just my opinion.

Michael Scott I prefer the original song, but the cgi from the special edition looks a ton better than that marionette. Honestly, even for 1983 standards it looks very bad it makes me wonder why they didn't use a human with prosthetics.
@TheXboxReviewer
@TheXboxReviewer 7 жыл бұрын
The original special edition release comes with a mini-documentary where Lucas specifically talks about this scene and how bad the puppets looked. As for the human prosthetics thing, idk, they just wanted something more alien shaped I guess. I mean all the backup singers are humans in makeup and then twilik dancer is also. *shrugs*

There are people who really unironically prefer the cringy over-the-top "Jedi Rocks" song and dance number with choreography and backing vocals to this smooth authentic jazzy funky gangsta music for a sexy stripper dance? This scene fits the movie, "Jedi Rocks" doesn't. It feels like Jar Jar or Han shooting first: annoying, cringy, shoved in for "the kids", unnecesssary, etc. This feels natural and authentic like something you would expect from a place like Jabba's palace. Just imagine if George Lucas had done the same thing to the Cantina scene and added a fucking song and dance number man.

Okay, up until this point I have never seen this version before and wow, I really wish I'd seen it earlier. I didn't even realize, despite it being CGI, that the remastered version wasn't the original. I'm not sure if this is like, milestones better or anything, but I can at least listen to this. One of the most painful scenes for me to sit through as a kid and even now is Jedi Rocks. I know people are against changes altogether but if they had kept this song and maybe fixed up the puppet a little bit, I would have been cool with it. But wow, this was a cool find.

The remastered version with that awful looking CGI band is genuinely embarrassing to watch, even when you're alone. The Star Wars I grew up with was a set of poor quality mono VHS recordings from USA Network that my dad made around 1994-ish when I was an infant. They have edits for time, but nothing major is removed (just a few seconds here and there). They are commercial-free because my dad had it on pause during every break. I still have the tapes, but they have been heavily watched and are in poor condition. I didn't see any version of the Special Edition until around 2006, and have always hated it.

I went to see Return of the Jedi in the theaters when they re-released it as special edition. When they got to this scene and I saw they completely changed it I WALKED OUT of the theater (yes I did). This is one of my favourite scenes from the original triology. I was so mad that they put that CGI crap in there and took the original scene out completely! It made me mad enough to leave the theater, go home and pop in my old ROTJ VHS.

I cant believe how badly they butchered Return of the Jedi on the bluray and DVD bonuses. Its not the same as i remember it. They completely messed it up by replacing this amazing scene with some cgi crapp and a completely different song, and the end scene where the ghost of anakin is replaced with hayden christiansan instead of the original actor. Lucas lied about wanting to add all this extra CGI in the first place, and sold out his own film.

I was born in 2000, so I obviously watched the 2004 special editions first, and I prefer this. The other song is so annoying, I don't even know why they changed it. I don't mind some of the changes to the Star Wars movies (Original Trilogy), but they completely screwed it all up for this scene.

Why are people saying the puppets are horrible? This was filmed in 1982 released in 83.The puppets and special efx makeup were amazing for it's time.

The original Sy Snootles puppet can be seen at the beginning of "Jedi Rocks" in the remastered version. She can barely be seen for a second dancing in the shadows.

Ok when they made a new version of this movie this scene changed a ton! First of all in the new version Sy snootles (the girl singing) is singing a totally different song and she also has backup dancers that sing along with her I'm just saying that this original version scene is much more different then the new version of return of the Jedi

Oh my god, I can't believe I've never seen this in my life! I wasn't even alive in the 70s or 80s and I'm 14 years old, and the only song I've always seen is the "Jedi Rocks", and I'm real mad, because I wish I saw this song. Goddamn it! If it was like Back to the future in real life, I would definitely travel 36 years(1977), 33 years(1980), and 30 years(1983). To watch these movies and see what they never showed in the 1997 special edition or 2004. Or if I could see them now, then tell me.

Dude, I said the SW "I grew up with," which in my case was a VHS box set of the theatrical versions my parents got me. Those were the ones that I watched and loved with my friends when I was a little kid. The Special Editions barely registered as happening for me. Never saw 'em in a theater, never owned 'em. I think I saw IV's special edition once, which soured me enough on the whole subject I never saw another. Figured why buy something I already owned. Chill out.

David Nash I literally skip this scene in the "special" edition. This and the scene between Han and Jabba in Episode IV. Awful.

Although I'm ok with most of the changes coming from the 1997 Special Edition, that one was really silly. The musical number was fine as it is here.

The big woman in the red outfit is an Askajian. She is a slave just like Oola, and her name is Yarna, according to the Star Wars wiki.

Either Lucas or John Williams commented on it, during the release of the latest version of the soundtrack, the 'super duper, fantastic, all singing all dancing, special, deluxe, edition'. I know I have to agree, it is a shame they are lost. All I ever wanted was both of those tracks and Cantina Band 1 & 2.

They did have a 2 disc DVD edition for each of them that had the new version on one disc and the original version on the other disc. I don't know if they're still available, but when I saw them, I bought them right away cause I had a feeling they would disappear.

Actually, the song they were finishing was Jedi Rocks; on the CD version, that instrumental part starts right when they stop singing. Even though I still really like *both* songs, the more I watch this, I do like this version better.
