When you compare Jedi Rocks to this, it's obvious what Lucas wanted. In this song, Lapti Nek, you can see it's like a space strip club, that this is all a nasty filthy place for Jabba's desires, and that girl dancing knows she's going to die, but in Jedi Rocks they make it look like some kind of fun happy place you'd bring your kid to to hear some entertaining music, and the slave girl dies abruptly almost by mistake. The reactions of people seeing Jabba kill her are mostly cut out, and even the bizarre lipped frog alien singer woman says "oops" as if it was an accident. Completely butchers the purpose of the scene, to let you know Jabba is a depraved sick druglord of space.

+Rory McCoy You are so cynical. I agree, Greedo is a terrible shot. Why would he do that..... But Lucas was the guy who created Star Wars, so unless you are the best filmmaker in the history of ever, be quiet.
@Halbarad569 жыл бұрын
+Jackson Jones you dont have to be a five star chef to decide if a meal tastes like shit so you dont have to be the "best film-maker in history" to decide if adding in shitty CGI into movies makes them worse. Sure he created Star Wars but as far as script-writing, creature design, effects design, the action direction, the score everything that makes a film a film he had almost nothing to do with. I know without Lucas we wouldnt have Star Wars at all, and I respect that, but a talented film-maker he is not.

Well, although it’s not the same one and although he’s not screaming in you face at timestamp 0:46 you can actually see this weird black thing under Oola’s arm next to a row of three lights. By watching a more remaster version (preferably the 4K edition of the new Jedi rock scene if you want to subject yourself to that) you can actually see it’s the same creature so to a degree, WE COULDN'T EVEN GET THAT??!?!?!?! Bastard. Fun fact: the character in this scene is an exterminator.

DAMN this version is really unsettling at the end with the trap door. I grew up with the new version but I think it's better actually how you originally never saw what was in the trap door. It kept it way more eerie. And of course the music is way better in this one. Here the music blends in nicely and enhances the atmosphere while in the new version, it's way too in your face and taking away from the scene.

It's really sad how the puppets from 1983 hold up better than the CGI done in 1997 and 2004. And no, that does not mean all CGI is terrible.
@TheXboxReviewer7 жыл бұрын
The Rebo band looks fine, but that lead singer looks god awful as a puppet. The CGI is dated, but even so, it looks better than this. CGI isn't always better, but this is a great example of when an update was a smart move. Not to mention the song is better in the remaster, but that's just my opinion.
@SagradaMascarita7 жыл бұрын
Michael Scott I prefer the original song, but the cgi from the special edition looks a ton better than that marionette. Honestly, even for 1983 standards it looks very bad it makes me wonder why they didn't use a human with prosthetics.
@TheXboxReviewer7 жыл бұрын
The original special edition release comes with a mini-documentary where Lucas specifically talks about this scene and how bad the puppets looked. As for the human prosthetics thing, idk, they just wanted something more alien shaped I guess. I mean all the backup singers are humans in makeup and then twilik dancer is also. *shrugs*

There are people who really unironically prefer the cringy over-the-top "Jedi Rocks" song and dance number with choreography and backing vocals to this smooth authentic jazzy funky gangsta music for a sexy stripper dance? This scene fits the movie, "Jedi Rocks" doesn't. It feels like Jar Jar or Han shooting first: annoying, cringy, shoved in for "the kids", unnecesssary, etc. This feels natural and authentic like something you would expect from a place like Jabba's palace. Just imagine if George Lucas had done the same thing to the Cantina scene and added a fucking song and dance number man.

The Star Wars I grew up with was a set of poor quality mono VHS recordings from USA Network that my dad made around 1994-ish when I was an infant. They have edits for time, but nothing major is removed (just a few seconds here and there). They are commercial-free because my dad had it on pause during every break. I still have the tapes, but they have been heavily watched and are in poor condition. I didn't see any version of the Special Edition until around 2006, and have always hated it.

They did have a 2 disc DVD edition for each of them that had the new version on one disc and the original version on the other disc. I don't know if they're still available, but when I saw them, I bought them right away cause I had a feeling they would disappear.

I love this song and this scene! They're just so much better than the new one!

Actually, the song they were finishing was Jedi Rocks; on the CD version, that instrumental part starts right when they stop singing. Even though I still really like *both* songs, the more I watch this, I do like this version better.

This sounded like actual 80s music, they never should've replaced it.
