In this video I talk about a command run on a MSI Notebook that is used to wipe the root partion but instead wiped the EFI firmware and "hard bricked" the entire laptop. I found this really interesting that Arch Linux at least on that type of laptop had the ability to assess the EFI which should be read only. I hope you enjoy!

It is still possible to fix, you either flash the chip that holds the EFI or just order one directly from MSI with the EFI already installed and just replace the old one

I have a few EFI installs of Arch (Which I much prefer to BIOS installs.), and on my HP Stream Mini, there is a /sys/firmware/efi/efivars, and everything there is writable. I wish I had something positive to say, but it just sucks that these files are at all writable.

This would have been useful to know two months back :D. I destroyed my MSI motherboard by doing # rm -rf / and when I was to power the PC on, it booted up nothing on the screen I just saw the fans turning on and off over and over and over. Although this wasn't a laptop it was a MSI B75MA-P45 1155 socket.

That's crazy!! how can it break a laptops motherboard. I find that impossible. I can see it damaging a hard drive but MOBO just shocking to me. I have to see this with my own eyes.

I know that some stuff with EFI (The install HAS to be EFI, to my knowledge.) needs the write privileges. It's why you should nuke a system with the much superior method, 'cat /dev/urandom > /dev/sda'. Destroy ONLY the hard drive data.

I personally had the same thing happen with my ASUS laptop where i removed EFI partition which was linked to some motherboard files(but i deleted it different way by formatting) and my whole laptop was broken and didn't even get into EFI(BIOS) settings it just kept instantly restarting and randomly powering on and off however after 2 months of playing around with it i was able to finally boot it up and fix it and just to be safe even reflashed newest UEFI version and now i'm running my laptop again. It was really crazy experience because it was my first time dealing with EFI but at least i gained new experience

+Doctor WarpSpeed i created USB drive with special EFI files and put it in USB 2.0 port not USB3.0 and then started the laptop and the screen was blank for 20 minutes then it suddenly started booting windows without any UEFI boot screen so when i was in the system i used WinFlash utility from ASUS since it's ASUS laptop and reflashed the UEFI from Windows to the latest UEFI firmware and since then it's booting normally as it was before

+vsDarling Thanks, it's interesting to see how many ways there are to boot a computer these days.

+vsDarling Although u can also reflash UEFI from linux but my boot menu was corrupted at that time because no EFI partition so i have no idea how it found windows but it booted so i'm glad for that

EFI is the badly designed evil spawn of Microsoft, for obsolete X 86 processors, which are being replaced by Arm secure TrustZone.

If it is writable, then it should be possible to write it back?

wow just wow, those morrons making hardbricking a computer possible? like really? i bet msi won't even give a fuck about this out of warranty, although it is their fault. all bios features should genearlly be lockable from the bios itself and only have minimal acces from the os: overclocking etc. but deleting it? wow

+Roman Karaba and it is storerd on mobo.... It's actually a standard to have efi variables writable on any efi system, just systemd is too shitty to make it R/O and write to it when it needs itself, but nah, let's hard code R/W

+The Diamond Games i always kinda thought that the bios always is stored in some kind of ROM on the mobo and the various settings you can change in some kind of flash storage on the mobo aswell and when something goes terribly wrong then the mobo just boots the stock bios from the ROM (and yeah i know that technically flash is a ROM :D but i think you get my point) but exactly like WHYYY
