There are a few details you notice better at a second viewing. One, you get to see what happened before in the intro. And if you look at the landscape, you can see the craters from the war before. It's possible that the canyon where Pazu lived was probably also a result of the war. Together with Laputa being just a legend, the war must have been truly devastating. It doesn't look like the world will ever recover from it with the resources looking as exhausted as it does. Not to mention the drop in technology. And Laputa was the most powerful weapon in that war. Just throwing the crystal away would not have been enough. With Laputa being visible someone would have decoded the technology behind it and spies would have distributed the knowledge. One flying machine with the robot's laser on a ship the size of the pirates alone would be devastating. Several squadrons? That would be a second cataclysm. This is essentially what would have happened if the Cold War would have gone Hot. Just without the radiation of a nuclear war. While I admire your faith in humanity, I think people today would be just as greedy as the people in this movie should we discover such a treasure trove.

The music in all of his films is great, but the soundtrack in this one is special, even among Miyazaki's films.
The GKIDS Blu-ray gives the option to see the film in English with the original music or with the expanded soundtrack. The Japanese language option only has the original music. As much as I like both soundtracks, I do wish the Japanese language option had freedom of soundtrack choice. As for why there's another soundtrack at all, it's because Disney (who dubbed the film) commissioned it. They provided the resources for Joe Hisaishi to create that other soundtrack. If you look it up online (you might need to use Internet Archive), you may be able to find Mr. Hisaishi's writings about making that soundtrack. It's pretty interesting😄
This is one of my favorite Miyazaki films. Maybe it's because it was the second film I ever watched from Studio Ghibli, but I absolutely love the story, characters, and music in this film

Ehm i would just say you got the hint at this moving,bc it's the same animation studio. The point with Musca is, that his familyline was not the mainline and they where against to leave Laputa, but Sheetas family was mainline and on the earth they got separated. That's what he's explained to her. And actually i can totally understand why they destroyed Laputa. Musca wanted to rule the world. He was a tyrant and he's a grown man. Sheetas only around 12-13 if i remember right so he's much stronger than her. And think about it. What would could've happened, if Pazu was killed or left Sheeta behind? Think about the obsession of Musca. They are both royalty and that thought is so disgusting and dark so I'm not saying it, but i think you can guess it. So, destroying Laputas OP-Power was a better option then letting Musca getting a chance at world domination.
