In Japanese culture being spirited away means that the spirits take you to their world and never to found again. In early Japan, people get lost in the mountains all the time and that maybe the roots of this kind of belief. There's even a story where people have been lost for 20 years and came back telling stories about this mythical land they've gone to. Japanese believe on many gods. Even in things, resides a god, like River spirit gods that take on a form of a dragon, or like the turnip god that Chihiro rides the elevator with. They say that if you somehow disrespect a God or a Spirit, they may take your soul to the afterlife, or turn you into an animal so noone would recognize you and think that your lost in the woods.

They're told ranger team what They're already been through, They're see lady in the white, an old man with staff like wiseman, men with ancient outfits on horses and carriage. Ghibli Made this looks so sweet not terrifiying like local mountain people said.

what I love about this movie is Chihiro's character development. She goes from a bratty and scared child who can't even walk down some stairs to a strong and confident child who will do anything to take care of her friends even if that means going to the house of a witch. Her time in spirit world really helped her mature.

I think it's implied that the father was changing jobs, and that's why they had to move. He would probably have scoped out the area and picked the house, so only the mother and Chihiro had never been there before (?) Also, I LOVE No-Face. I think the reason he is obsessed with Chihiro is because she's the only person who didn't want anything from him. I consider him to be a greed spirit. He stalks someone to determine what they want (bath tokens, gold), lures them with it, and then consumes them. But he's baffled by Chihiro, who wants nothing. He can't understand it. It drives him crazy. Beyond this, No-Face is never satisfied by what he consumes. Like how people will keep buying new things, richer food, better clothes, in the pursuit of happiness, but material things leave him empty. What finally satisfies him is being useful to someone else. And I think that's beautiful :) A lot of people find the movie "gross" due to all the vomiting, but I think of it as a metaphor for cleansing. Haku was poisoned, the river spirit was polluted, the baby was spoiled, and No-Face was corrupted. They all needed to be cleansed by Chihiro's kindness. The vomiting is physical manifestation of their spirits sluffing off toxic energy and becoming better people. As you said, she leaves an impression on everyone she meets!

I always interpreted it more as No Face being a spirit that feeds on his surroundings, so being in the bathhouse filled with a greedy vibe sent him into that state, but when he’s alone with Chihiro and at the swamp, he feeds on that feeling of purity/family. I think he’s just heavily influenced by his environment, even his name and voicelessness implies he seems to have no natural identity of his own.

one thing someone pointed out that i've never been able to forget is that as the family is leaving, it's clear time passed- we don't know how much time has passed. they could have been gone for YEARS and not aged a day. How would they explain that? They don't have a home to go back to nor one to move into. how are the parents going to react to finding out theyve been away for so long when to them it's only been, at most, an hour or so?

Just because some of the bathhouse staff LOOK human, doesn't mean they ARE human, especially in Japanese folklore. The "humans" in the bathhouse are more likely yokai (Japanese supernatural beings) made to look human for the guests. Lin/Rin for example, according to my studies is likely a "shirogitsune," or, a white fox yokai. And Haku is a "mizuchi," or, a water dragon; or in this case, a river dragon.

The section with the 'stink spirit' is based on an incident in Miyazaki's own life. He was helping to clear out a polluted waterway and managed to pull out an old bicycle. So, after being cleaned up, the 'stink spirit' is revealed to be a river god.

You can look at it at the surface level like that. But if you dig further, Miyazaki actually used his films to express his personal and political views. He's even said in the past how he wished Tokyo would be overtaken by nature haha (because he was disappointed by the state in which it had become). Anyways, Spirited Away has to do with not only Miyazaki's criticism of Japan becoming too westernized and forgetting/losing its cultural identity, but also a celebration of how traditional Japanese values can be restored and persist in modern society. General gist (you can research more on your own or analyze the movie as if you embodied Miyazaki's views): No Face represents Japanese people and their loss of their identity, Chihiro's growth and her reclaiming her name and family represents who they can and should strive to do to reclaim their identity, the River Spirit was the state in which Japanese culture has become due to the neglect and pollution brought in by westernization, etc. etc.

Nice reaction, but I see that you guys were confused over a lot of things so here are some clarifications: Spirited Away is mainly about growing up and how that process involves losing, finding, and maintaining your identity through your interactions with others. Chihiro almost loses her identity, but manages to keep it and even gain a better sense of who she is as a person through the challenges she goes through and the people she meets. Haku lost his identity, but gets it back with the help of Chihiro due to his act of selfless kindness years ago. No Face has no identity and is searching for it. Like a child, they are easily influenced by their surroundings. Chihiro's kindness makes an impression on them, so they seek her attention and happiness. Being influenced by the other bathhouse attendants' greed over the gold (literally absorbing them), they start behaving badly and offer Chihiro gold, thinking it'll make her happy. When it doesn't, they throw a tantrum like a child. Once they are removed from the bathhouse and purged of its bad influences, they revert to their innocent self. Zeniba's place is a good fit for them as it is the opposite of the bathhouse, and Zeniba herself is shown to be a good, firm person. (Also, if you still haven't figured it out, Haku stole Zeniba's seal, because Yubaba ordered him to) That being said, the bathhouse is not a bad place. No one in the movie is thoroughly evil, everyone is simply going about their lives. No one is human except for Chihiro, which I think you figured out. In Japanese mythology, it is common for spirits to take a human-like form, and dragons are associated with water so they are usually river spirits or ocean spirits. As for how long the family was gone for, while there is no concrete answer, it likely was not that long, at most two months. The reason I say that is because, in an interview, Miyazaki said that the change in scenery and the dust in the car was more to communicate to the audience that yes, something had happened, something had changed. The different scenery shows that Chihiro is different now, it reflects her growth as a person. Plus, the car battery still works. (Also, if you watch the beginning and ending scenes again and compare them, you will see that it's not just the forest that looks different, the gate itself is completely different. In the beginning scene, when they drive up to the gate you see it's made with red plaster, but when they drive away, it's made of stone, implying that the gate we see in the beginning is the gate to the spirit world, different from our reality.) Just one nitpicky correction: Grave of the Fireflies was not directed by Miyazaki, it was directed by Takahata Isao (who also directed Only Yesterday, Pompoko, The Yamadas and The Tale of Princess Kaguya) The movie is based on a semi-autobiographical book by Nosaka Akiyuki and is quite a faithful adaptation, the beginning scene that you two mentioned is exactly how it begins in the book. Although I can't speak for Takahata, I would guess that he kept the opening scene out of respect to the author and because ultimately, the movie is supposed to be depressing and most Japanese people would go in expecting it to be since it's WW2 Japan.

I love the character development of Chihiro there. From being spoiled, overprotected, and whiny into a fully grown and matured as the film goes on. No-Face is a dark spirit who resembles a black humanoid being with a white mask. He devours other spirits and can absorb their emotions into his own soul, causing him to take on their attitudes, especially negative ones, which lead to his transformation into a villain. He serves as an antagonist until his redemption. So, when No Face noticed the compassion and kindness from Chihiro, he absorbs and knows the good attitude and character and now he was a good guy.

My worst gift was my father yelling at me for finding out that Santa doesn't exist when I was like 6 because I accidentally saw them putting presents under the tree. He also yelled at me because as a shy kid who didn't want to go on the ET bicycle in front of a crowd when I like 6 or 7. Big wonder why I'm messed up as an adult.

what you said in the beginning of the video is absolutely true. A lot of people have tricky family relationships and those get highlighted during the holidays. It's ironic that it's supposed to be nice time when people do good things for each other and practice forgiveness, but everyone are just getting upset and arguing left and right. For me a lot of the times the best moment of christmas is when I can just hide under my blanket and watch something comforting, which is definitely what your chibli reactions are, so thank you. Thank you also for making it very festive with the background and even your outfits. And yeah, the reactions are super

I love how, near the end of the movie, when Yubaba told those three Spirit's that they could eat Chihiro's parents, instead of being indifferent or excited, they were all horrified by the thought. Just shows how much Chihiro's presence has changed the Spirits opinions.

Spirited Away proved itself as an anime film that not only became the first movie in Academy Awards history to win an Oscar, but helped set the standards for future anime filmmakers to so much reaching at least a nomination at the event. One example? Mamoru Hosoda.

even if something looks human doesn't mean it's a human, and chihiro basically already in spirit world, that's why in the beginning when the spirit get off the boat they become visible and chihiro become invisible, and Japanese spirits can take human form, or it just a humanoid yokai(spirit). Haku basically a river god (that's why his original shape was a dragon) and yubaba steal his name, and when chihiro say his real name, basically his contact with yubaba ended.

Some fun facts! Chihiro is voiced by the same girl who voiced Lilo in Lilo and Stitch. Chihiro roughly translates to "a thousand questions" because the first character, "sen" (pronunciation can change to "chi" depending on context) means "a thousand" and "hiro" means "to ask questions." The Japanese title is "Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi." "Kamikakushi" means "Spirited Away." "Sento" also means "Bath house." So the literally-translated title could roughly be "Chihiro is Spirited Away at (or to) the Bath House." Still learning Japanese, so anyone please correct me if I'm wrong. Haku is voiced by the same guy who voiced Kovu in the Lion King 2. Haku means "master, lord, or overseer." Which is fitting given his position in the bath house. His real name, "Kohaku," means "amber." So he's the spirit of the Amber River. Lin is voiced by the same lady who voiced Megara in Hercules. Lin is actually a white fox spirit, not a human. They're known to shapeshift, so that could explain why she looks human. That colorful stuff that Lin was giving the soot sprites is called Konpeito (con-pay-toh). Basically solid star-shaped sugar. Kamaji is a Tsuchigimo (soo-chi-goo-moh), a humanoid spider in Japanese folklore. His name means "old man in the iron boiler." Yubaba was inspired by the Babba Yaga legend. Chihiro was based on the actual daughters of some very close friends of Hayao Miyazaki. They were very much like Chihiro was in the beginning of the movie, but he knew there was potential for them to grow and mature into hard-working young adults. No-Face's name in Japanese is "Kaonashi." Which means "faceless." He's essentially a spirit of greed and temptation who just longs for a place in the world. The way Haku was animated when he slammed into the wall of the bath house was inspired by a snake or lizard falling from a tree. And his thrashing was inspired by how an eel thrashes around after its head is cut off. The animators also went to a dog shelter to figure out how to animate Chihiro giving Haku the medicine. That little "evil begone" ritual was inspired by a real little ritual in Japan called "Engacho" used to make filth or negativity fall from the body. The Japanese voice actress for Chihiro had no idea what it was XD Those last lines in the English version of the film don't exist in the original Japanese version. Miyazaki has revealed that Chihiro doesn't remember her time at the bath house. She doesn't remember the adventure, but the lessons she learned along the way stayed with her. It's a true coming of age story.

Chihiro is played by the voice of Daveigh Chase, and the movie was made in 2001. The actress was 11 at the time, so that must be the same age as Chihiro. She would not be 6.

spirited away is a wonderful commentary on capitalism. Haku is a dragon( spirit of the river near her last home they just moved away from), The baby is humanity babied and forever childish by capitalism (personified in the greedy Yubaba). The other side of the coin is cottage industry (Zeniba) who provides the sustenance and moderation needed for no face(the human need for connection and reason that people in capitalism try to fill with materialism). The tale also shows the results of capitalism in the scene with the pollution in the big river spirit. Cihiro's love for Haku is the love for the land and river she grew up in. All infused with traditional Japanese folklore. Just magnificent storytelling.
