India is home to seven species of lapwings. Red-wattled lapwing, Grey-headed lapwing, Yellow-wattled lapwing, White-tailed lapwing, River Lapwing, Northern lapwing and Sociable lapwing. Lapwings are ground birds that are incapable of perching.
River Lapwing and northern lapwing are listed as Near Threatened, sociable lapwing is listed as Critically Endangered.
