I had my own dance company and studio, which my son took classes in. I was so proud of him for taking classes, and although he wasn't the best, he gave it his all. One year I produced CINDERELLA, and he was in the ballet. As any proud parent I had his photo made and adorned my desk in my kitchen. Unfortunately one weekend having a sleepover with 8 of his friends the photo was seen. By the Monday after the sleepover EVERY PERSON in my son's school had been told about the photo. My son was severely bullied that changed his life forever. The photo, incidentally, is now in the closet on the shelf. Insensitive comments have to stop. Think before you speak and pray for clarity in thought, word and action.

I appreciate the genuine and gracious responses from these amazing men. I think Lara Spencer handled this as well as anyone, because face it, we all speak ignorantly from time to time. It is brave to recognize one's ignorance, and the hurt that was caused by it. It is justice to do whatever is in one's power to right the wrong, and to help be a part of the solution. What I think strikes me the most about this whole thing is this: From a strictly human perspective, there is nothing masculine or feminine about dancing or singing, painting or making music. Art is absolutely UNIVERSAL to being human.

He LOVED dancing. He took ballet and tap, and later jazz and acrobatics. He was VERY popular all the way thru school, he defended the bullied, and girls LOVED him. He's a great human being, still defending the bullied and has been with his GF for 4 yrs. The eldest started dancing after he saw his little brother on stage. He also took tap, ballet and jazz. His first school dance, he came home with the BIGGEST grin on his face! He danced the whole night and had the girls lined up waiting to dance with him. He's an attorney and is getting engaged to his GF in October. Dance doesn't TURN boys gay! (I ALWAYS hear that and it angers me). I'm a proud dance teacher, and I have taught quite a few boys the art of dance. BTW, dancers are SMART! Dance teaches math(geometry especially), science(body awareness), anatomy, HISTORY and French! Who wouldn't want that? Only the ignorant wouldn't want that!

Frances Wilson Sure, you have a freedom to comment whatever you want. Looking into this situation, you are saying that Lara did nothing wrong? That kind of takes away the purpose of this video. She had no fear in commenting to a PRINCE, and to dancers ALL OVER THE WORLD, on NATIONAL TV. Without TV, of course the situation wouldn’t travel to people as fast. But since this is through media and TV, that issue went through millions of dancers. MILLLLLIIIIONS!!!!! And you are over here with your shoulders up and chest high claiming that she did nothing wrong and you’re asking us what’s wrong with us? Really? 🤦🏽♂️ This was Bullying 101. Analyze this situation, and the people that are in it and get back to me when you realize it.
@ryleeswildride39435 жыл бұрын
Frances Wilson What she did was bullying. If it was unintentional or not, it was a grown women, bullying not just one child, but making a mockery of an entire community. If a kid, boy or girl, wants to dance, then people should encourage them rather than wondering how long it will be before they change their minds. That kind of mindset like in your comment, or what Lara said is what will make kids want to change their mind in the first place.

Look I think some people took it too far but an entire community filled with people that are both straight, gay, male and female have spoken out against that comment. I think it at least starts the conversation around what men can actually do instead of being tied to the ideas around what we think men should do. I am also a straight male dancer so it’s nice to see that people are trying to open up the gender role conversation. I do agree that some people do find ways to be offend by everything but hey we’re at least making some sort of social progress.

I'm glad an attempt was made to apologize, but this conversation was too much on the surface level for me. Why didn't Lara delve into the reasoning behind why she made the comment. All she said was it was a stupid thing to say, but what's her belief that perpetuated the comment. It's the stigma that one of the dancers mentioned but didn't elaborate on. There's a fearful belief of if males do something that's characterized as "feminine", they'll become more "feminine" and therefore might inhibit homosexual tendencies especially if the activity has a large number of homosexual males such as ballet. There are heterosexual male ballet dancers too. Whether it's ballet or any activity, it won't make a male "feminine" or "homosexual". Ballet is a beautiful expression of art and is a craft that teaches so many things like discipline, flexibility, and strength. Men should be able to express themselves through ballet if they want to without judgment.

YES! YES! And YES! The segment was trash! They talk about a "teachable moment", but literally nothing was "taught" other than male dancers are people too and don't make fun of them. Ugh!
@DncnDenise5 жыл бұрын
It's beyond that. Why is it that in other countries, like Russia and China, especially, male dancers are REVERED? They are MASCULINE! Baryshnikov is a prime example of masculinity. I'm a dance teacher. My boys danced. I didn't make them; they WANTED to. Middle one started at 3. Eldest started because he saw his brother onstage with all the girls. (Son was Bambi, and the girls were flowers). Never ONCE have I made my male dancers appear feminine. Did you know that back in the 40's and 50's, across much of the country, social dance was taught IN SCHOOL? My dad was a FANTASTIC dancer! He learned in school. I first learned to waltz on his feet. You would think with all the dance shows, the stigma would go away. But people like Lara Spencer continue to perpetuate the stereotype, ignorance and bullying! It truly is sickening.

You've missed it. She insulted an ENTIRE art form and all the people who sacrifice their time, money, and bodies to do it. I've trained in ballet for 17 years. And ever since day one I was mocked and belittled because of this public perception that dancers aren't worth anything. I have been told countless times to 'get a real job' or to 'do something better with (my) life.' This in turn has caused significant mental health issues... and I know for a fact I'm not the only one. I lost a dance friend to suicide less than a year ago. Out of ALL the other kids in my dance classes as a kid, I only know of one who's still dancing. The others have quit because of the mockery from friends and family. Physically, I am in my mid-20s and I am in pain every day of my life. My calves, my ankles, and my back are constantly sore from my years of dance. I kept dancing anyway because I loved it, but I have paid a high price for it. Lara's initial comments perpetuated that public perception that dancers are somehow less than human. That somehow we are lazy and defective and will never be good enough as people. And. It. Needs. To. Stop.

The big issue for me is that a person like Lara Spencer needed to have a teachable moment like this in 2019. I understand that she went through all the same steps a person caught cheating or doing drugs does like having a conversation and saying she has learned stuff. In 2019, these type of teachable moments shouldn’t even be happening. Personally, I feel like she was forced to do this by the higher ups and will make comments like this again.
