My father was a machine salesman and in his later years started his own machine shop. We got a contract thru McDonnell Douglas in St Louis to rebuild 35 Bridgeport 1 1/2 hp mills I was hired to help.. I can do these teardowns and rebuilds in my sleep

Izzynutz Restorations love it! ‘ I’ve done a few DeWalt Radial Arm saw’s. All the parts are basically the same on each model, it’s just that some are 3x larger than others depending on model.

Thanks for the helpful video Barry! I’m rebuilding my Bridgeport currently but for some reason it’s rlly hard to shift from hi to low gear and was wondering if you had any idea for why this would be
@HWMachRepair Жыл бұрын
It could be debris in the sliding housing or your shaft may have a slight bend. If you want to call and walk though some troubleshooting you can call at 1-800-285-5271 and we can try and help you figure it out.

At 15.30.. I can't engage low .. I'm trying to find out why it will not lock in. High gear and neutral ok just won't click in low. 😠 I'm wondering if it's been taken out at some point for whatever reason and put back without the big gear down. I would love to strip it down but my boss won't give me the time. 😢

It is possible the pin is not locating to the detent hole in low. Put the machine in high and remove the shifter handle assembly (shaft and all). Then make the adjustment required to be in high. If it will still not shift correctly to low then the machine was reassembled incorrectly the last time it was worked on. -Barry

Berry. My Bridgeport runs smooth and quiet in high range but noisy (grinding gear sound) in low range. What is the most likely problem? Thanks
@HWMachRepair Жыл бұрын
If you have hearing the noise only in low it is most likely a Bull Gear issue. You can give us a call if you want to talk it through: 1-800-285-5271

Hello Barry, Question; how to re-install the high/ low lever if it had been removed while the machine is assembled, in high gear, low gear, or???? I Love your videos, and thank you Dok
@HWMachRepair3 жыл бұрын
You will have to install the lever in the HI position and make possible adjustments from there. Give us a call if you have any questions 1-800-285-5271 -Barry

Amazingly helpful video, Barry!! I am trying to repair my older 1.5HP 2J - seems someone messed it up a bit - it has no neutral, only HI, LOW and LOCK AND STALL, lol. Once opened up, it seems small bull gear is not in correct position on shaft - it is way too high. I have fixed that according to your very clear video instruction, but I don't know how far to press down the top bearing on that shaft. Does it go all the way down to the lower key? Thanks. You provide an awesome service and I will be ordering parts I need for this rebuild from you guys ASAP!.
@HWMachRepair4 жыл бұрын
Basically, you want it as low as you can get it without resistance on the other bearing. I usually will press it all the way on and then feel the resistance. If there is slight resistance I will back it off slightly until that resistance is gone. Give me a call if you have any other questions 1-800-285-5271 -Barry

Barry, reassembled small bull gear assembly, put everything back together, and fired it up. Everything working beautifully, shifts into neutral exactly as it should. Thanks for your help, and for all the videos you post. They are an immense help to hobbyists like myself. (As it worked out, no parts were needed at this time, it was just a case of someone previously putting it together incorrectly)

Do you guys work on Alliant mills?
@HWMachRepair3 жыл бұрын
We do, there are two different styles of Alliant and two different companies support them. We would just need to know the serial number to know which company to go through. If you have specific questions about your machine you can call or email: 1-800-285-5271 / support@hwmachinerepair.com

Good video Barry , I just picked up a vari speed Bridgeport this was really helpful . I plan on watching all the Bridgeport videos . Just curious , I was tempted to buy a Lagun FTV-1 , 3 hp. but there is not a lot of info on those , what is your opinion of that machine ? Hey thanks for the videos , please keep them coming .
@HWMachRepair4 жыл бұрын
Hi Otto, Laguns are great machines that run exceptionally well. There are still parts available for the FTV-1, but the downside is that the parts are extremely expensive, and very few of the parts have a secondary source that you can get them cheaper. I would just make sure that it is in good working order before any purchase so you don't get stuck with something that is going to cost an arm and a leg to repair. Give us a call if you have any specific questions 1-800-285-5271 -Barry

Hi, You say you almost always replace the "spline gear housing or Hub" (but you say nothing about replacing the spindle) and you have a new one still in the bag. Why do you "almost always" replace it? does it cut down noise? We love your videos and we subscribed, THANK YOU!
@HWMachRepair3 жыл бұрын
The spindle almost never needs to be replaced, only if the splines are extremely worn or if something out of the ordinary has happened to it, like warping. The Splined gear hub is most often replaced because it wears faster than the Spindle Pulley Hub since it's on the bottom and it has more pressure on it. It can cause excessive noise when it starts wearing down when running the head in high. If somehow you can stand the noise, and let the teeth wear all the way down, your spindle will quit spinning. If you have any other questions you can call us at 1-800-285-5271

In low position, how far above the small bull gear should / can the large gear be? Should they be completely even?
@HWMachRepair4 жыл бұрын
Hi Doug, In a perfect world they should be flush to one another. When I start them out I will always have them flush, but the most important thing is that large bull gear engaging in high. They can be as far as a quarter off from each other by the time you have the large gear set correctly. If you have any other questions feel free to give us a call at 1-800-285-5271. -Barry
