About 7 years ago, my neighbor had 2 ficus' he was throwing away. Both had no leaves at all, and were about 4 inches tall. I did the scratch test on the bark and it was still green underneath, so I asked if I could have them. One is, I believe, a Ficus salicifolia, ( willow leaf ) and the other is I believe, a Benjamina. My benjamina has much smaller leaves then your trees do...Now, these have grown into very thick, very vigorous trees. They grow very quickly, so wiring must be checked frequently, and cuttings take so easily, I now have MANY of each species. Mine grow outdoors spring ( around 60°F ) through summer, they come back in when temps stay under 55°F. As you said, they do drop leaves, which took me awhile to understand and not get panicked about, and the Willow leaf is a VERY temperamental tree, it will turn leaves yellow, if its disturbed, but dont worry, its natural. They get used to coming indoors, and when spring comes, they start shooting like crazy all over again. MASSIVE growth in the spring when feeding starts up again. As you said, pruning is almost constant, they grow so quickly, Great video Peter...

Thank you for the wonderful video’s. I’m new to bonsai, and was watching this video you said all Chinese elm should be outside. The sell here in the US is saying I should keep in indoors. I trust you are all Chinese elm safe to keep outdoors, our winter can get down to about - 15 f. Your advice is greatly appreciated thanks

I live in Brazil and I have a giant ficus, this plant only brings us joy for its incredible vigor. I also have a large carmona (50cm) and its secret is a good fertilization and not watering the crown, only the substrate because its trunk rots very easily which can generate fungi and pests in the future.

I understand that you say "indoor tree" because of your weather because ficuses are outdoor trees without a doubt. In fact, if you see the grouth of your ficus you will see the lack of direct sun (big leaves and long internodes)....It would be interesting if you specify that information as it is really relevant.

Ficus in the tropics and warm climates grow in full sun. In dark shady places they will get longer internodes.

How do you thicken the trunk of a ficus?
@jpalmer1967

Time. Just be consistent year to year & you'll see growth. It takes 1-3 years before you'll notice a real difference. Get the trees outside once the temps stay above 50F. Fertilize every 30 days. Use Peter's technique, treat them like a bush, trim every couple months in the summer. Inside during the winter, just keep them near light. I use a small grow light. Don't trim & never let the roots sit in water like a lake, constant root moisture though. I use very little "dirt", mostly a rocky type substrate, similar to cactus. But, got to water almost daily which I don't mind. Use a light fan breeze indoors to avoid fungus & watch for bugs. If bugs, spray em down in the bathtub with insecticide, which is where I also water. I only repot every 3-5 years & in the spring/summer.

When I got mine, everyone thought they were dead...took me months to finally see leaves start to shoot. As long as you see green if you scratch the bark, they are still alive. But I will admit, they are finicky trees. They like constant conditions, and will "sulk" when conditions change. They do NOT like heat vents, or direct AC on them. When indoors, mine stay in a window, in a pretty constant room temp. Humidity helps...Sorry you lost yours. Dont give up.

@@Blaydrnnnr Strange, my benjamin ficus doesn't mind an environment that changes from time to time. Though I have noticed that whenever the environment does change, the plant stops growing for a time and then after some time it starts growing again. But other than that it seems to be just fine.
@Blaydrnnnr
@Blaydrnnnr Жыл бұрын
@@christianriddler5063 Yeah, my Benjamina doesnt mind too much either, but will drop a few leaves when moved inside until its acclimated, but the Willow leaf is far more fussy. It tends to get a bit more distressed when I move it inside or outside in the spring. But it will acclimate. You just cant be afraid and panic when these drop leaves. Yellow leaves dropping is normal from time to time.

I really wish you would stop talking about money and how much things cost and all of that. It makes you sound extremely entitled and focused only on the economical part of our hobby. You are an amazing master bonsai king. You are getting older and I know that’s what happens (my mother needs to worry about money like you do worrying about looking up how you prune a ficus…😅). So I think people are probably scared to suggest things to you because of your personality and status but I’m not buddy. I mean it from the bottom of my heart in the most constructive and positive plane sir.
