Large Format Landscape Photography in the Redwoods S1E9

After 3 days of traveling along the California Coast, I finally arrived to my destination, Redwood National & State Parks. I reserved a campsite for Thursday & Friday because there was rain in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday. This left me with only one day to scout and one day to photograph. Luckily the conditions worked out and I was able to walk away with a photograph I am truly satisfied with.

The last two were the winners. Great idea to move left, I think lining up the sapling with the larger tree was an enhancement. I always find forest scenes challenging, so hard to isolate a subject; unless there's atmosphere like that fog. You got a couple of meaningful images, that was a successful trip. I went to school at Humboldt, so I have a fondness for the Redwoods. Thanks for sharing, looking forward to the next vid.

Thank you! I use the reciprocity app. I stick with the same film stocks and pretty much have the times memorized.

Thank you! I bought that lens and center filter about 13 years ago on EBay. The lens will show up fairly often, but the center filter might be difficult to find.

What do you mean when you say “15 seconds, which on ektar is 30”? Do you simply prefer the way Ektar looks when overexposed by a stop? Is that what those labels are on the side of your camera? Also, your shots are amazing and I love the style of your videos

Hi Chuck. Once you get into longer exposure times, film suffers from reciprocity failure. The longer the exposure, the less sensitive the film becomes to light, so you have to add time to compensate for that.

Great location and the last shot was very nice. I prefer the Kodak over Fuji. Which 210 mm lens did you use? Interested to know the image circle of your lens. I have tried shooting with my Fujinon W 210 mm on the 8x10 but it doesn't have sufficient coverage.

Thank you. My 210mm is a Rodenstock Apo Sironar W. They can be a little difficult to find.

That’s correct. The film can be special ordered but it’s not practical unless you have multiple people interested.
