In this video update I'm moving on to working on the interior of the C-57D Space Cruiser.
Here I show you how I assembled the inner decks and then lit them with LED's.
Also a friend sent me a nice surprise lighting upgrade for this build :)

I believe Bob Kinoshita worked on both Lost in Space and Forbidden Planet which is why there are so many similarities in the design elements.

Hey Boyd!!! Just wanted to give you an FYI, I'm a recent transplant to Texas, and just put a minisplit unit in my garage (to set up my model workshop). Even in this hot summer this thing has my garage down to 72° in ust a couple of hours, with no insulation. I remember hearing you say your hours are limited there because of the heat. This beauty really works !!

Much as I’m aware that most everyone else is here for the fine model building and rightly so, what I enjoy the most is when you get to the lighting, as there’s always a unique Boyd twist. The chaser lights are great, but the interior lighting adds a wow factor that only you would think to create. I look forward to seeing the final result.

About 12 years ago I happened to be browsing KZbin and came across a video of someone building and lighting an old AMT Star Trek model using at the time, new "high tech" LED's. I hadn't done any serious model building for almost 30 years and that video and more that I found, got me back into building and then starting my channel. It's still fun to figure these things out and problem solve along the way.

That’s a really cool model. I recognize the interior set from the movie. Like the video monitor where they viewed the “eclipse” and the hatch where the ID monster got in and shredded the engineer.

Pretty cool Boyd! This is going to finish up nicely. There were several builds of this model since it was offered. A few builders made heavy modifications to get the ship screen accurate. My favorite appeared on one of the modeling forums. The fellow made the interior colors a neutral brown color on the floors and some kind of gray for the walls. There were concentric rings around the navigator consol. Many of these things appeared briefly in the movie. David Merriman worked on one of these that had motorized doors that opened and closed. I've not seen any pictures of the model finished. I like what you did with the exterior to make it smooth as possible. What's interesting is that the outside surface of the full size prop ( where the actors walked around and climbed into the ship) wasn't very even! 😉🙂
@TrekWorks
@TrekWorks 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I did know that those rings were there on the floor and I really wanted to put them in but I couldn't come up with some masks to do it. They would have to look perfect since it literally would be the center of attention. I'm worried about how I'll get the darker outer ring color on the hull. There is no clear line of definition there to use as a guide so it'll need a good eyeball and a steady hand. I'll have to lay off the soda for that job lol.
@triskellian
@triskellian 2 жыл бұрын
@@TrekWorks You are quite right about the rings being a tedious task! I used to be able buy photo frisket film (made for graphic art) at an art store. For round patterns, I used a drawing compass and would cut them out with a no. 11 blade. A steady hand was needed indeed! As for that outer darker ring, I had the same trouble painting it on the small C57-D. If I were to do that again, maybe making a template out of thin clear plastic would've done the trick. 🙂

I am delighted that the rotating light board works for this kit as well as it does (normally for the Jupiter II). I'm glad you like it. The crew cabin is still a spectacular feature of this monstrous kit-- I only would have asked to see it lit up without the ceiling cage in place. A very nice job of routing and covering up the wiring. I remember thinking back when the kit was new, that they should have released just that interior. I thought they did a really nice job on it. And you too! Something at that scale, with all the opportunities for details, really invites working in every corner.

That hull is fantastic! It is incredibly smooth and uniform. The edge appears amazingly straight considering the flimsiness of the styrene. Absolutely inspirational. Hey Boyd! Great build, great progress! I was wondering... how did you exactly diffuse that lower dome? It looks really nice!
@TrekWorks
@TrekWorks 2 жыл бұрын
I sprayed a light coat of the hull color over it with my airbrush. The lower dome looks like the hull color when the engine shuts off in the movie. I've done this type of diffusion before on other models. I found that you pretty much have to use an air brush to do it because it sprays a fine mist of paint that won't look blotchy when back lighted.

Looking really good Boyd. Did you have to solder those LEDs to the board or does it come complete? I was thinking that would work in the Invaders UFO.

The board comes fully assembled. I know that Tenacontrols has a lighting kit specifically for the Invaders UFO.
@MrChief101
@MrChief101 2 жыл бұрын
@@TrekWorks Must chime in! My board is a kit. I am the first to admit it is fussy to assemble. I designed it 25 years ago when my eyes worked better! I assembled it for Boyd as a courtesy and time saver for my chum-- I have put together about a dozen now and it's easier. There is a difference between my board and -- from what I can tell -- every other fully assembled board out there. It is that my board allows for adjusting the speed of the "rotation" (and brightness). Every other board gives you only whatever they decide for you. Also, for no known reason, they still all use cool white LEDs which are not accurate to the studio models as shot nor on screen. My kit comes with warm white LEDs. And TenaControls' boards are terrific and do everything one could wish a Jupiter II to do... except pick a different speed and stay that way!

Hey, I know this isn’t related to the video but more concerning “Christine” the 1958 Plymouth that you restored years ago. Currently I’m planning to buy my own 1958 Plymouth Belvedere and planning to turn it into a Christine replica. I was wondering if you could tell me where you purchased the anodized aluminum side trim..the side trim that gives the 1958 Plymouth that distinct look. The one on mine are really rough and I was hoping you could tell where you got yours for your build. If you can remember I’d really appreciate it bro.
@TrekWorks
@TrekWorks 2 жыл бұрын
I was very lucky. When I bought the car, the previous owner had been gathering some parts for it and had found an original set of the trim new in the box from old dealer inventory. It came with the original instructions of how to install it on the car. This was often done at a dealership back then. Anyway, the trim is extremely rare and expensive to find. Many people have taken years to gather all off the pieces from swap meets or different cars they run across in a junk yard. I highly suggest you join the online group www.forwardlook.net if you haven't already. The people there restore these specific cars and the forum was priceless in my restoration effort. They know where to find parts, and also if any new parts are being made. The big issue with restoring this car is that there are almost no new reproduction parts being made for them. The demand just isn't there. The cars themselves are very rare as I'm sure you know. Always good to hear another is being brought back, best of luck with your build.
