This is so relatable. When I was a child, I was told to leave plates after eating. My sisters would collect the plates of my father and mine. As a child, it never bothered me. It was the norm. But as I grew up, I began to understand that it was so wrong. Women are always treated like slaves. Now I do all my chores myself. I am learning to cook as well. And I will definitely share household chores with my future wife.

Did anyone notice one of the ladies calling her daughter to serve food for her brothers? That's exactly what is wrong with our culture. Please, let us promise ourselves that we wont pass on this discriminating attitude to our next generations.

The reason I liked the ending is because Manju goes and sits next to the cooler in the end. Without saying a word to her husband or any of his male guests. She sits there, breathing heavily...drinking the cold juice and just breathing. It's a silent slap to the husband who forgot about the fan. A silent slap to all the male guests who are now forced to wonder how their wives are coping inside the kitchen. And perhaps it was not the audacity of Manju but the realisation of their actions which caused everything to go so silent in that room.

When people said women are weak and low and exhausted generally This is what I see, 24/7they are in front of gas stove, closed room with lack of oxygen, making them lethargic due to no fresh air, lifting heavy vessels, burning hands in hot oil and rotis, and still living with the burn wounds, having shortness of fresh breathe in a suffocation filled hot room, wet body with large stream of salt water (sweat) flowing all over body, do not have freedom to lift up the top or dress even in feont of lady mates and wipe the excess sweat amd take air, Total top to bottom, left to right thick fabric clothing in name of fake modesty to further trap that excess heat inside her body and skin making her 'Body organs' function slowly and bring her lethargy (excess heat bring weakness and lethargy and dehydration), no view in front of eyes except steams out of cooker, gas and oil pans, etc. (Makes a person's mood further depressed), women doing all these heavy works with a hidden 'Stress and fear' in minds that what if men and kids don't like our food taste , will we have to make it again, a stressed mind results in compromised physical health. After, food is cooked, she does heavy work of carrying all heavy vessels and tongs and hot jars to living room and constantly attending orders of men on table like a waiter in hotel with a hidden 'Fire in belly'. The men and kids gobble food like greedy, leaving behind less tidbits and leave to sleep or chat , women washing and cleaning men's soiled , saliva-plaited dishes with vim, and keeping back in dish racks , till that their appetit has GONE due to physical exhaustion as (digestion is internal labour), and they silently and unexpressively sit on ground taking own plates, and serving those leftover tidbits (forget abt balanced diet, its tidbits after men and kids ate) and eat alone with no GIGGLING, laughing, watching tv or not having a 'HAPPY feast'and no men or child gies to talk and entertain them or serve them and ask them 'Was your hunger fulfilled with thise tiny todbits and leftover cold meal pieces?' And LO ! All the tidbits unfortunately are LOST in monthly bleeding periods, again rendeeing her malnourished and anaemic and weak. While if its a married woman , when after the hungry and weak and tired woman returns in a bedroom in myth that she will relax at least an hour full, she is many times forced by horny husband to sleep chupchap on back while bending knees on bed, in a woman in bottom like a submiisive 'Object' , speechless, energy less and ofc with no libido with all the malnourishment of day, while full bellied, enthusiastic and empathyless husband jumps like a beast on her in name of 'Husband's need, physical relations and traditional wife's duty'.

What a powerful work Neeraj Ghaywan! Few things I admired the most: 1. The dark theme for a "supposed to be" happy get-together. The starting sequence in the beginning conveyed the main message of the film 2. But it was the small scenes in the film said the larger picture and problems in the society. We all have seen this in our families where woman get cooked up in the kitchen and men enjoy the "time-off" in the living room. 3. Shefali Shah is par excellence. Manju's character is so well etched, she is not just furious by her husband who ignored the fan-fixing and other man, but she is furious at the other women too who continue to teach other women to be like them. The steel cup for maid and the lady asking her daughter to feed her brother/s (notice she calls them "bhaiya" so the son is older than the daughter). 4. It not only reflects how men treat woman, but it shows what woman teach other woman/girls when they know it's not right. It also shows the deep casteism and classism in the society, the behavior towards our servants. 5. The music in the end gave me goosebumps Kudos and utmost respect to all the homemakers!

They did a really good job at playing with the sounds, from the very beginning, the background sounds of utensils and men talking loudly, it did a really good job at making me feel suffocated. And when she came out in front of the men, the music turned it into a very soothing and breathable environment. In the beginning, when the camera follows the ladies in the kitchen, took us from that narrow corridor to the women's world, like an air pocket in a cave.

The movie definitely portrays some deep themes beautifully. It starts with the sounds of clanking of utensils, which is then taken over by the laughter of men, symbolizing how the struggles of women are often walked over by the blusters of men. The men boast about having to work in strenuous conditions and we see that the women working in the kitchen are no different. Starting from handling hot contents in the kitchen to trying to repair electrical stuff themselves, the women face it all or mostly. The first few shots are of only one woman serving the men but we are soon shown the grim face of the rest of the women as well. Even the children are not spared from the faults of the patriarchal society. The caste system seeps in when we see that the hostess rubs her dirty hand off her maid's head while she climbs down the stool. Showing the maid rejecting the tea being served in a different glass reflects self-dignity of a person, I believe. Finally, the hostess realizes the flaws of the household system which even involves the children, and she decides to take a stand and face her husband. Only then do we get the sound of the cooler working as if breathing new breath into the household - men realizing their hypocrisy and women taking their stand. And not to forget all the beautiful lines, especially those comparing Hillary and Trump.

The way the little boy was so confident in talking with superiority to the girl is evident of the fact that boys are trained to feel superior right from their childhood. This is the reflection of the society that we live in, where the difference in the rules for girls and boys is inculcated right from the childhood. Also women accepting and supporting the unacceptable behavior of men boosts their unnecessary ego, some women do it by choice to look "gharlelu" (couldn't think of another word) while some do it out of fear for facing the consequences should they take a stand. As is rightly said, be the change you want to see, the female protagonist took a stand finally starting a new change for herself. I have lost so many friends, because they still believe in this old school behaviour and me taking a stand did not go down well with them accusing my spouse and myself being unethical. I strongly believe they are definitely among the current 4.1K dislikes and I want to say thank you for making room for practical people in my life.

Great movie. Its more about mindset. How men enjoy on the labour of women and degrade them in offices and homes both. All men characters in the movie are very disregardful to all wives. They didn't offer them to have some cold/hot drink together. They didn't offer to help. They didn't bother to have their company and collective talk, they didn't bother about giving break to people working in kitchen. They didn't bother to even offer a seat to the pregnant lady. They didn't offer to help in the kitchen with the fan, and some smaller work, like serving etc. This set up wherever it is followed is very suffocating.husband and wife are supposed to be friends, partners, and not master and slave... Good message from the movie.

The only person who was actually helping the leading lady is her servant. But when asked for a cup to offer a tea to the servant, the pregnant woman is giving a steel glass... The eyes of that servant at that time was the most painful one, I think, in this whole film... Then obviously, the climax, brilliant...

The video is something else. Honestly. With barely 4-5 dialogues of Shefali how the society badly treats a woman is shown Firstly after marriage she is the maid of the house. She has to cook clean and take care of every little thing while the so called "man of the house" enjoys drinking alcohol and smoking cigarette Secondly when all the women are traeted the same in their respective households , still instead of supporting each other they make sure to bring each other down. They just are standing in the kitchen in the name of helping the host lady. They are obviously seeing her struggle with the chicken dish , even then no comes forward to help her. On the top of that 2 of them are watching videos. These socalled friends even want to damage your relationships and dynamics with anyone for eg. Here the maid. It is obvious that the househelp lady and the protagonist have more connection than the boss-servent relationship still that pregnant lady interferes in their dynamics. And sadly the protagonist lets her do it coz after pregnant lady is her so called friend and the househelp lady. Moreover the mothers are forcing their own children to such toxic patriarchy. And that husband? The talks about Emperor Akbars dysentery are so important to him that he cant even help his wife. The effect of men being superior than women has also been embedded in the innocent minds of those children. Only fighting for Hindus and Muslims is not the only problem in our society. If you open your eyes and are more receptive in your daily life , you will find so many things that you can stop and correct. Just to make our community our society a better place

The little girl who carries the dishes for her brother reminded me of myself. I am the most pampered one in the house after two brothers. But these little things always showed up. They could sit and chat and play while carrying the tea tray was girls' job. And it seemed like natural selection. This has been persistent over the years. It doesn't make a difference whether you do a job or not, you are young or old, women are treated in same way across cultures. Sometimes women themselves glorify it. It is the worst part. And in a family setup, you can't ask questions to your mum. Like the little girl was shut up and made to carry the plates, trust me the scene is so original, I could see myself in her. Thanks for the film.

this is what feminism and gender equality about. mentality and so called tradition. it is an unhealthy tradition to pass on, the little girl experience and the way the little boy threatened her, the husbands and the male relatives (the conversation context), the husband and wife treatment, the women with the tradition and belief practices (which she didn't explain to her daughter), the way the maid was treated (just because she was a lower class labor), and social expectation and judgment (married or not married, have children or no children). He gets food first . And after eating, either I or my mother pick up the plate of my father and brother. And everyone take it like so normal. But I used to think about it. And now after watching this video and reading the comments, I know it's same everywhere. 😭 We need to stop guys. These men and society needs to stop. The must give the atleast equal respect If not more. Really very disappointed. Being a 14 yr old I notice each and everything but sadly couldn't express . I feel so bad for everyone. 😭

I absolutely loved this. I watched this so many times already, and I can’t get enough. I love how raw the movie is, how it’s so realistic and so eye opening while being so subtle. To everyone saying ‘oh women why don’t you fight back, stand up for what you want yadayayda’ to them id like to say we’re trying. For a woman to stand up for herself is not an easy deed, it takes courage and an acceptance of the fact that she will judged and disregarded. As a woman, growing up you accept your fate when you see your mother and the way she is treated and even The small things add up, even if it’s a woman serving food to a man. We start accepting that it’s our fate. So to come out of it takes courage which is easier said than done.

This short movie has depicted the perfect example of class antagonism for equality. They are as follows:- a) The women class is struggling against the men . b) The lower class (represented by the maid) is struggling against the higher class (represented by these home makers) by not giving the tea in a same cup and c) The plantation of distinction of struggle and conflict between male and female at their very young growing age by the children. But the harsh reality is only some can able to make a change (like this woman) and others won't as they don't know about it (like the Small girl) and other who knows but cannot do anything (like the maid). Beautifully explained and highly commendable.

This has become such a common sight for almost all Indians... what hurt me the most was the way that pregnant lady gave a bad and old cup instead of a nice one like the others and how that little girl was told to serve food to the other boys... The true slap in the face was in the end when a fed-up Manju took a glass of juice and sat in front of the cooler and how the other ladies just watched in awe

My mom's (and her friends-generation) faced this in a well educated upper middle class home. I am in my 30s now. No girl that I know will probably have to go through this. Although I was a a teenage boy then, I remember protesting that my mom and others should not have to do all that they did, and I did what I could to stand by her. I didn't think about all this gender equality etc. Then. But two decades later I feel proud that I did what I did.

This short powerfully and veraciously depicts the broken-conventional Indian household. So much is said with eyes, without the use of words. I had heard that 'the eyes do the talking' on multiple occasions before but understood it's real meaning today. The way in which we all discriminate against women since childhood, the different rules we apply, the type of chores we assign and expect them to do is the core point of concern, in my opinion and it should be worrying to everyone. I believe in equality in all aspects and try my level-best to apply it in my life and in the way I handle my siblings. My parents are wise, no doubt about that, but in some cases they lack clarity or can't relate to, so I try my best to explain to them in simple terms and sensitize them on various relevant topics. I bring a new perspective to the things they've been used to and they're like, "Yeah, I hadn't thought about it like that. True!"

I think JUICE in the film is an antithesis to everything around. it is an antithesis to the dryness around, the dryness in the chicken served, the chicken in the kadhayi which got stuck, the hot and roasted baingan which she was struggling to peel, the spicy ghughni demanded, the humidity and compactness in the set up and especially the juice that had gone from her life and which she was in dire need of. When in the hall, the juice was an antithesis to the alcoholic drinks with men. And the entire sequence of her gulping down the juice (with a sound and an expression of relief) in front of men with their empty and half empty glasses of drink and the half eaten chicken pieces (very masculine set up), was an act of reinforcing her existence, an act of breaking the compactness in the woman's life and a rebel against the men and their fairy land world of "Trump trumped Hillary" and irrelevant topics of interest (which is already obvious).

I loved this. The perpetuating cycle of privilege and patriarchy...from the fathers to the children - how the girl must eat after her brothers. How the women are victims and yet perpetuate the cycle - the steel glass to the maid being a case in point. Barkha's voice is the background that her being a strong woman is one of the key reasons for Hillary's unpopularity and then the men refer to her dismissively as Bill Clinton's wife. The remark by the man that his pregnant wife does nothing all day, the host's unconscious disregard for his wife's urgent plea re: the fan (he'd rather discuss dysentry), the priviledge of the space - the men get the prime space and the women, the kitchen...so many nuances in 12 min. Bravo!!! Such a fabulous ending - the quiet and yet poignant act of rebellion, her husband's initial anger and finally sheepishness when fixed with her stare.

Yes it is about that. However, it’s about equality and not just “respect.” True respect would mean men would share half the load in every aspect: chores, raising children and wouldn’t think they own their daughters or wives. This is the only way to ensure women get true independence and respect in society: when they don’t have to answer to their husbands and their partners know it’s 50/50; and when daughters aren’t treated different from sons. Men aren’t gods gift to humans. We need to instill that in ourselves and our children.

That is where the problem is. Boys should not be appreciated for doing something as simple as that. The more we dramatise the household chores and how big a deal it is for a man/boy to do it, the harder it is going to be to break this mold of patriarchy in our society. It's not a big deal if a boy or girl pick up their plates or even wash it after eating. It's your plate after all.
