The largest crash in NASCAR history takes place during the 1960 Modified-Sportsman race at Daytona held on February 13, 1960. An incredible 37 of the 73 starters were involved in the first lap pile-up. No less than 9 cars can be seen flipping over completely or turning over on their side during the crash.

Like the then top of the line Grand National division, they too were learning a whole new world. When Daytona opened in 1959 Darlington was the only other big speedway. The rest of NASCAR's races were were held on mostly short dirt tracks. There was little pavement back then. This was a whole new world to everyone, particularly how to drive the unknown speeds. With the poor level of safety then it's a miracle no one was killed.

@Brian Salomon Back then the cars were not limited to the current production year. The race took place in 1960, but the cars in the field, especially in the Sportsman class, which this is, were a combination of the previous 3, 4, 5, or even 6 years. The Grand National division, which later was renamed the Cup division, usually ran the newer cars.

You could thank a lot of that on the fact that cars actually had thick metal bodies back then, instead of the thin metal parts and poly stuff. Check out the damage to the cars in this video. You will see that they have a lot less damage than you would expect from a 150 mph wreck. A car these days would have been pancaked at those speeds.

@@abcdefg9213 yes, but the deceleration will not kill you, nowadays you can have much more impact absorption and slower deceleration thanks to technology like airbags keeping safety (or the hans device in case of racing), but back in the days when nothing like that existed, you would prefer an strong body for the car

Besides fireball Roberts car exploding or a few instances drivers getting ripped apart, nascar has always been extremely safe. Even dale Earnhardt 19 years ago crashed so unviolently but I believe he Probobly had a weak neck after 499 1/2 miles. Nascar will always be the KING of motorsports!

I was at this race, it was called a modified version race. SOME cars were Convertibles .The first Daytona 500 on the " New Daytona track" was ran the Year before in 1959 . Lee Petty won it, and it took 3 days to determine the Real Winner. Johnny Beaucamp was declared the Winner for Three days, Then A man brought a picture to Bill France Sr. that He snapped at the finish line, and it shows that Lee Petty won by Head lights, bumper , & front grill. This wreck stopped everything, and they pulled the drivers from the Convertibles first, in case of a fire starting.. I attended the first 19 "Daytona 500's, at the " New Track. In those days MR. Bill France Sr the President of NASCAR, the Man who had the " New Track" built, would be at the ticket counter in Oct., Nov., Dec., & Jan while the ladies went " to lunch". He would say " Come on in here boy, how many ticket do you want" Most of my tickets were bought at the Ticket Office right at the "Tunnel " under the 4th Turn, & most of the time Bill France Sr. took my money and handle me my tickets. A very Nice Man. The previous Daytona races was run on A1A highway and the actual Daytona beach. WOW!! Crazy Races, & you went home after the races, with sand in your hair & clothes, especially if you were on the curve where the cars came off of A1A highway & Back on to the Beach part of the track!!

My understanding is that both Petty and Beauchamp drove their cars to the winners circle or stand or whatever they had and both cars were photographed. Too bad they didn't film it. There is some question of whether the famous photo of Petty, Beauchamp and a lapped car was actually taken exactly at the finish line.Well they declared Petty the winner. Interestingly there's some queston. Whether Ray Harroun actually won the first Indy 100. Oh well

Still today my pit crew is my dad and my brother just like back then they had dad's brothers sons pitting for them. I can't believe how bad 160 plus mph wreck would feel like in those cars today I got a wall at 155 mph in a stockcar and it hurt bad. If I was in the safety gear from back them and those cars I'd be dead instead of fractured back at age of 15 I'm 29 now quit racing 3 years ago can't risk hurting my back again

Regular everyday clothes, arms bear, helmets with little protection, no shoulder harnesses, and a primitive roll cage. Back when racing was racing. My how things have changed. And it was all done in actual stock cars racing around a track with no catch fence.

ah, the good old days, when a driver could go to church, take off his tie, knock back a few cold ones and get out on the track by 2 p.m. good times...

This shows the danger of having that many cars in the starting field of the race. This is why NASCAR started limiting the starting field to around 40+ like we see today. Overcrowding in the early stages of the race.

I'm just surprised those cars had roll bars and seat belts let alone drivers wearing helmets, I mean look at f1 in those days, this was really advanced in terms of saftey

Back then, there was more "Stock" in Stock Car Racing... The trade off was that the cars were more rigid because they retained the production chassis and body components of the street versions then, so if they flipped and rolled, the driver felt more of the impact even with the roll bars and racing harnesses, which themselves were an improvement by then, because quite a few cars didn't have any of that in the very early days of NASCAR... Nowadays, the drivers are surrounded in a complete specialized tubular frame and roll cage with a simple sheet metal body attached to that, and the cars absorb much more of that force and momentum from impact by flying apart...
